The Mu-so has landed

Posted by: Steve J on 06 October 2014

John Lewis had one in the local store. They give a 2 year warranty so I couldn't resist. Very easy to set up with the Mu-so app, about two minutes. Initial impressions of SQ are good even from switch on.

Had a listen yesterday at a local dealer, mightily impressed only downside I can see is no coax input.

It sounds even better plugged in and played via the USB, and like all the iOS devices, it charges the iPad too.

Heard it at john lewis a few days ago and i was impressed. I left thinking maybe i could use it as a sound bar for the tv too.

Thanks Paul. It's going to have competition though, it will be in the same room as my active vinyl system. Im still burning in a NAC72 which has just been serviced in Salisbury, can't believe how good that it is too. A winter of even better music coming up all round.

I've just seen / heard the Muso at my dealers this morning . What a beautiful sounding and looking bit of kit. It looks like Naim have hit the jackpot. It looks like the perfect second system to me.

Picked my Muso up on Saturday from HiFi Corner in Edinburgh. My first piece of Naim equipment and I hope it doesn't send me down the same slippery slope as Apple did with my first Apple purchase many years ago!

To those that have bought a Muso already, when I unboxed it I seem to have a couple of bits of wood slotted into the last two air gaps at either end of the heat sink with a couple of bits of tape attached. I'm guessing these are some sort of protection for during transportation rather than an integral part of the equipment?

I'm enjoying the unit immensely. The only downer seems to be that my Qobuz app on the iPad keeps pausing/missing gaps whilst playing back through Airplay. I'm not sure if it's a wifi or a Qobuz app problem. I'm streaming it at FLAC (16bits-44.1khz) quality so it maybe due to limitations on my wifi although with 45mb connection speed through my wifi using BT Infinity I'd be surprised. I've just finished installed iOS 8.2 so I'll go see if that's improved it at all.

Anyway, back to the lounge for a listen but now the wife's complaining she's hardly seen me since Saturday!

Getting my Muso delivered tomorrow from Richer Sounds. I think I will be one of the first to receive it in Ireland and it will be my first Naim product. It's replacing a Marantz Consolette so I can't wait to compare them (hoping the Muso will be a clear cut above the Consolette). I use airplay streaming software from a Windows 8 tablet which is very convenient for listening to music from any application.

Collected my Muso this morning and installed it pretty quickly. As I want to route the TV through it I got an optical connector as well and that connected no bother at all. Sounds pretty good, though obviously it's not a sound bar as far as the TV is concerned. Musically it is excellent with good all round music definition from bass through treble and is a nicely balanced sound as well. Only thing is that the digital connection has dropped out several times both in AirPlay and tv. Wife is not going to accept having to refire  the digital connection when she's in the middle of Game of Thrones, particularly as I have the Muso on a shelf under the television, where the top controls are not too easily accessed, and she is Apple challenged as far as using the Apps are concerned. Anyone else experience that?

Have to say that Naim are on the ball here and have made several suggestions which I won't take up just yet, such as changing the optical cable, as I suspect the cause could have been wifi related. However, I was happy to relate to them that it is speaking quite happily through my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air over Airplay. I haven't bothered with Bluetooth here at home.

Sound quality is phenomenal! Stuff that was sounding rough on my other gear has been revived and sparked into new life. From early Cream, and Ralph McTell to Clapton's wonderful JJ Cale tribute and the lovely Passenger, everything I have thrown at it has impressed. Even my HiFiphobic wife was amazed at the clarity of the sound, and she loves its lack of wires and footprint. She's even learned how to use the remote in conjunction with the television. What an £895 bargain!

Saw the new Muso in Wellington tonight , with Doug Graham introducing it. Very attractive and with a great knob that was very tactile to operate( the Muso not Doug!). The  different grills are not flat but have a wave profile. The sound that issued forth was excellent. Doug said sales are going very well, and the dealer said supply  may lag behind demand for a while.

Doug said in his introduction that most people cannot conceive paying $5000 for a CD player, as many forum members would. However he said most people love music and that introducing a high quality all in one box may whet people's appetite for Nairn systems further up the quality chain.

That's a shame, it'd be a really useful option.

Phil,

Am just wondering if the auto standby kicks in while playing or otherwise? Just dropped while in AirPlay and was reconnected automatically when I pressed 'play' on iTunes. The auto standby is set at an hour which would match the time I had been playing the Muso.

It's a small thing but the mu-so auto standby still leaves the 'connection' LED illuminated. This is actually quite bright in an otherwise dark bedroom so I'd prefer either the LED to be not illuminated in standby or an option to go into auto 'deep sleep' which is nice and dark!
Any chance of looking at this on a future firmware release?

Nice of Ikea to have a Mu-so stand already! £8.50 buys you a Lack TV Bench, 90cm wide, 26cm deep, 45cms high. Black or white. My new Mu-so is sitting on it now (white), It hasn't made any noise yet, but switched on. We are just admiring it, looks like something from the 21st century just beamed in. Oh yeah, it is.......Apart from the mains lead and plug, which look and feel xmas cracker, but Im sure being Naim, they will more than do the job. They also had a 'blue' metal coffee trolley (with wheels) which would have done the job too, easily moveable. Not sure of effect wheels on sq. You could spike the Lack table of course. Get this thing going now.

Irate from Swindon here! I have been listening to the muso this morning with constant interruptions on every track! Before jumping on here to berate Naim I had the good sense to mirror what I have been playing with my B&W A7 in the next room. I have to say that both players go down at the same time, almost without exception, the exception being the B&W stayed up slightly longer on a couple of occasions. The difference since yesterday is I have upgraded my MacBook Air to the latest Apple operating system, OS X 10.10, which I have to say is proving to be deeply unattractive (why do I have to minimise using function keys instead of a mouse?). I will try on the iPad and see if it is any better but OSX 10.10 does not appear to stream very well with iTunes at the moment.

iPad is working reasonably well with one brief hiccough. However, the iPad does not seem to like mirroring so can't try the B&W A7 at the same time. No iPad playing problems for a whole album.

I suspect you have a network / router problem. I had similar issues about 2 months ago and bought a new router… problem solved for a minimal financial outlay.
