The Mu-so has landed

Posted by: Steve J on 06 October 2014

John Lewis had one in the local store. They give a 2 year warranty so I couldn't resist. Very easy to set up with the Mu-so app, about two minutes. Initial impressions of SQ are good even from switch on.

I have to say that both players go down at the same time, almost without exception, the exception being the B&W stayed up slightly longer on a couple of occasions. The difference since yesterday is I have upgraded my MacBook Air to the latest Apple operating system, OS X 10.10, which I have to say is proving to be deeply unattractive (why do I have to minimise using function keys instead of a mouse?). I will try on the iPad and see if it is any better but OSX 10.10 does not appear to stream very well with iTunes at the moment.

iPad is working reasonably well with one brief hiccough. However, the iPad does not seem to like mirroring so can't try the B&W A7 at the same time. No iPad playing problems for a whole album.

I suspect you have a network / router problem...

+ 1 It does sound symptomatic of a router or network problem rather than a Mu-so fault.

Nope, am pretty certain it's an Apple 'feature'. I see elsewhere on this site that there has been problems with IOS 8.1 and now OSX 10.10.

I've had similar problems since I bought the unit and it's detracting from my enjoyment of the Muso but I'd put it down to a wifi problem too.

My home network is set up on an Apple Extreme/Timecapsule with BT Inifinity as the provider. I've got an Airport Express set up in the lounge (where the Muso is) working in 'extend network range' mode but I still get the odd breakup/pause using Spotify on the iPad and a lot more using Qobus, also on the iPad.

For those of you with more IT knowledge what are my other options? I have a dLink Powerline adaptor in the study (where the router is) that feeds my son's PS4 in his bedroom. Should I look at buying another adaptor and running a network cable straight from that to the Muso? If so then am I still going to get the same problems if I'm streaming my music from the iPad through Airplay?

If it helps the last test I did on wifi speed next to the Muso showed an average download speed of 16.2 Mbps at 2.03 MB/s but there are huge peaks from a high of around 45Mbps to a low of about 5Mbps. It's showing full bars on strength of signal. For comparison if I do the test in my study I'm getting 34.4Mbps and 4.3 MB/s but the peaks/troughs aren't as extreme (16-48)

Any help would be appreciated as it's doing my head in!

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately I only picked up my Muso on Monday so have not had too long to play with it. However, current circumstances have only emerged since the upgrades to MacBook Air and iPad operating systems, although MacBook is appalling. Additionally, MacBook is the only device that is not streaming directly from iCloud ie the music is local on the MacBook Air. I'd have 'experimented' a bit more but my wife would have lost the plot.

That shop you bought your Muso from at Toll Cross is quite nice. My brother lives just round the corner and I used to have a drink in The Cloisters when I visited Edinburgh.

Yes, your I-Pad has access to the same music as Mu-so (Spotify, UPnP, I-radio...) so use mu-so for room filling and your I-Pad for headphone listening.

If it helps any, I have no problems with airplay streaming from Windows 8 to the Muso. I have two different airplay streaming applications (one called Airfoil and one called Tuneblade) and both work perfectly. My router is an Asus RT-N66U. If you have a Mac laptop or desktop, you could try the free version of Airfoil to see if a third party solution makes any difference at all?

Thanks for your suggestion Ross. I have Airfoil on a MacPro in the study which I used to use for streaming to an Apple TV and I added the Qobuz Desktop Player and it's streaming their Studio Master tracks to the Muso with no breakup/interference whatsoever. Maybe it is just an 'Apple Device' problem.

Most welcome Stovie, not an ideal solution of course but let's hope Apple sort out the airplay problems with iOS 8.

Some of you might be pleased to know that a small update to OSX10.10 was performed automatically on my MacBook Air this morning and magically I have been streaming to my Muso all morning without a hiccup. Now, I wonder where half my Led Zeppelin III songs that are on my PC but not on the MacBook Air, which is supposed to be matched, have gone, and why output mirroring works on my MacBook Air and Windows PC, but not my iPad or iPhone? All of this getting too tricky for you Apple?

I bought my Muso last week, but have only had the first chance to get it out of its box(es) today.  I was really pleased with the painless setting up procedure, it connected to my Rip NAS on my first attempt.  Brilliant build quality and gorgeous sound; I echo the views of some posters in wishing that it had a headphone socket, but apart from that... the Muso really is excellent in all respects

I dropped in to John Lewis in Cambridge again today.  They've created a new 'Music Streaming' area with nice displays by Sonos (boxes piled high and two sold in the 5 mins that I was there), Bose, B&W etc.  In contrast the mu-so sat on a plain white shelf on its own with no signage looking rather forlorn.  The bright fluorescent lighting certainly didn't flatter the brushed aluminium casing and there was no possibility of enjoying the superior sound in that environment.

There's plenty of money in Cambridge and with the right marketing I think this product would fly off the shelves. I actually felt annoyed that JL could do such a bad job presenting the mu-so. If Iwasn't already a Naim customer I wouldn't have given it a second glance. Come me on guys - it's a great-sounding, premium product and deserves (much) better!

Posted on: 28 October 2014 by Solid Air

It's not JL's fault. As a mass retailer they respond to customers' priorities and, to an extent, investment by suppliers. They don't see it as their role to educate customers - people have heard of Bose and Sonos and that makes them an easier sell. In that market, brand is everything, and brands take time and investment to build up. If Naim has the patience and money to do that then they can eventually succeed. If not, mass retail is not for them.

As Solid Air has said maybe not up to JL to promote, but a display pack with first stock wouldn't go amiss, it may be sent and not used of course.

NAIM  always have plenty of banners behind their items at shows and local demos.

As you know the mu-so has just entered the stores, positioning and place holders for the product are being introduced store by store, it will just take sometime to complete.

I thought you wouldn't miss out on this.

Posted on: 28 October 2014 by Sinsen

Hi all.

I just received my mu-so, and I notice a bit of hiss from the tweeters, faint white noise.

The noise is allways present when the device is not in standby mode, so it is not related to any one input.

It is by no means loud, but faintly audible at 2m. Is anyone else hearing this?

Thanks.

Posted on: 28 October 2014 by Steve J

No. Mine's silent.

Posted on: 28 October 2014 by Sinsen

Thanks.

Actually, I was able to hear the same noise, only way fainter, on my main rig, so I guess my power is to blame.

I'd been looking for a higher quality streaming option since I bought the Muso. Initially I'd started a trial membership with Qobuz but I've found both the iPad and iPhone apps very buggy and the user interface is shocking. Interestingly I'd registered interest with Tidal which went live in the UK today (http://tidalhifi.com/gb) First impressions are very good. All their tracks seem to be in 1411kbps, 44.1 kHz/16-bit FLAC and ALAC format and the 'front end' of both the iOS apps and the desktop version are very impressive.

What Hifi have a very good review too if anyone's interested http://www.whathifi.com/tidal/review

Have deliveries begun in the U.S.?  No word from my dealer.  He's not commenting once he got my money.

Thanks,

I'll probably hear something in November.

Sinset, if you set UpNp and don't select a track or select iradio and stop stream with the volume setting still at the same point I would expect you to hear some hiss from the drivers, I can in mine though not from 2 meters away depends on the back ground noise in your home.

Posted on: 28 October 2014 by Sinsen

Thanks Paul, good to hear it is not a symptom of any fault.

Apparently they stopped carying Bose, since the Beats M&A so Naim could be in a good position as there is no real conflict. Opportunity for an impulse buy would be nice.

The product is listed on the Apple website store... showing 1-3 days for delivery... but I don't think they actually have inventory in stores as yet.
