New app stopped working

Posted by: John Byrne on 06 October 2014

I have a UnitiLite and the new app worked until today. On startup it now shows "ROOMS" with my unitiLite displayed for selection. When I select it I get the message "Streamer not responding".

No options are available except "Add room manually". I can add my UnitiLite manually and it duploicates the one that's there and both "don't respond"

Kinsky finds my streamer just fine from the ipad and Leia, AssetControl and eezuPnP all play from windows laptops.

I've tried upgrading to iOS 8.0.2 and that doesn't help. My UnitiLite firmware shows 3.23.00

All devices are connecting wirelessly via BT HH5 and the UnitLite is wired to that.

(Is "new app" really its name? Mine seems to be called "ROOMS", there's no other branding)

Turn the streamer off and on again.

Posted on: 06 October 2014 by John Byrne

Having done that a number of times I meant to write in my original message that turning off and on doesn't work. However, I thought I'd better just confirm again that restarting the BT HH5 also still doesn't help before replying to your message an 'lo and behold' the "new app" now finds my streamer.

I'm hoping that's not just chance and it'll stay working.

Well done (for suggesting something I'd already tried but your power of suggestion is clearly stronger than mine).

How is your system all connected.

Does the streamer go straight into the HH5?  (not a good idea)

How is the NAS/Server connected ???

Posted on: 06 October 2014 by John Byrne

QNAP NAS and streamer wired to HH5. Everything controlling the streamer goes wirelessly through the HH5.

Why do say that's not good?

Posted on: 06 October 2014 by Guy007

The QNAP has issued several firmware fixes recently and it might have disabled part of your previous setup and hence the HH5 might have had a 'disconnect'?   Also I have had mine occasionally change IP during this firmware process.

IME most ISP hubs don't work that well,  they do not manage streaming packets, instead send & receive all data everywhere to everything requiring the individual devices to select & sort the data.

I had this set up - NDX/HUB/NAS & had trouble with slow connections, I did not realise that it was slow until I made the change,  but the killer was after 3 or 4 albums the hub overheated & lost wireless & eventually NAS-NDX connections.  The hub cannot handle music streaming traffic !!!

I installed a network switch Netgear GS105v4  & all problems were fixed ......

Net switches learn the MAC address of the devises on the network & send & receive only the relevant packets to the devices that require them - e.g. they do not send NAS file music to the NAS

JB,

the 'off and on' trick really seems to help; unplugging sometimes is also a good trick. Just so you know, the new app was difficult to get going (for me) but it has been very good once it was all settled in. I agree that the 'rooms' aspect to the interface is confusing, as the app really seems to be made for the Muso specifically. BTW, I had to go through the whole process of setting things up multiple times for each device that I installed the new app on. But glad it is working for you now.

.....and it would seem that the 'branding' on the App opening screen (confusing to everyone that doesn't have a mu-so!) is being addressed in the imminent revision.

Thanks all. I had been thinking about getting a switch but not been sure about what to go for. Is the Netgear GS105v4 being recommended?

Posted on: 07 October 2014 by hungryhalibut

People seem happy with that Netgear. I have a little £40 Cisco 5 port switch that works well. My switch has an Airport Express connected, to receive commands from the iPad. So a wire to the switch, and three wires to the AE, SuperUniti and UnitiServe. If you switch the router off, the system still works, though without Internet access. This arrangement isolates to Hifi from other network traffic and is generally thought of as a good way to go.

I have a similar problem on my iPad / SuperUniti.

'Rooms' and then 'no server found'.

No other set up options appear and no guidance either.

So far I'm very unimpressed with the new app.

It works for me.  Its one of the two switches recommended by Linn & frequently recommended on various computer & AV forums - along with other makes such as Cisco.

This is a 5 port,  8 port is also available if you need more.  It's a simple "unmanaged" switch  & all thats needed for a simple system.  Unmanaged switches do not require you to have IT knowledge such as MAC address programming as do the more complex (& expensive) "managed" switches.

Talking of MAC addresses,  you might double check to be sure your streamer & NAS are set for DHCP,  this allows the BT HH5 to assign IP addresses to your equipment & is ideal for your small home LAN.

Also make sure the HH5 is also set to DHCP for each of the devices

Open HH5 Mngr

Advance Settings (password)

Network - see the "map" of your system

Click on each device & check that each is set for DHCP.

Ah! Now connected and working via the hi tech advanced method of turning the SuperUniti off and back on again.....

Posted on: 07 October 2014 by hungryhalibut
It usually works!

Unlike Mike, I've fixed my ip addresses, at the router and the Naim boxes. The setup has been a lot more stable since doing that. You can turn dhcp off via the setup screens and enter the fixed address.
Posted on: 07 October 2014 by Mike-B

HH - I've fixed my IP addresses as well

I advised DHCP to remove any potential other problem that might also be present. IME with these kind of issues its better to go back to basics,   & in this case to remove any possible IP conflict issues.

Then after its up & running correctly its OK to go to static IP's provided you know what you're doing.

Well done! Come up to the front of the room and pick out  new lab coat! Glad it worked, John. Them electrons sure are pesky little buggers. Although the new app seems better than the previous green app (by which I mean, the new app seems to connect more reliably) I will look forward to the update which is apparently in the works at Apple.

Except for a few CD's which my CD 3.5 would not play, the old system of physically selecting media, putting it in (or on) the media player, and pressing 'go' (or moving the arm) was always reliable. As much as I love my UQ, the majority of my 2-1/2 years with it has had one consistent characteristic: a sense of unease every time I pick up the iPhone to make it go. It has failed to connect or play often enough that I'm always a bit worried that I'll have to go through the on-off process on the UQ or with the UPnP servers before we get stored music or radio.

I'd happily forgo features for old school stability in the new streaming world.

Thanks Damon, I proudly accept the teacher's prize for a simple solution to complex problem, even if it was more luck than judgement.

I do agree that the physical ritual of playing vinyl and even cd's is intrinsically more satisfying than streaming. Somehow there is less pleasure in downloaded music irrespective of audio quality.

To continue the analogy it seems like cheating.

Sorry, I've been away. But I have now got a Netgear FS105v2 which plugged in and worked straight off.

Thanks for the prompt. It was on my ToDo list for a while.

Posted on: 09 October 2014 by Mike-B

So pleased to hear it worked for you John, not that I was in doubt.

In all cases that I've (& others) suggested a switch its always worked.

Its just the right thing to do with all the ISP hubs IMO,   & maybe the same can also be applied to many of the marketplace available routers as well.

Just realised what the F is in FS105v2. As far as I can see it means 'slow', at least compared with GS105.

Will I notice? Should I be taking it back and getting a gigabit version?

Posted on: 09 October 2014 by Mike-B

"F" means fast  100 Mbps

"G" is Gigabit  1000 Mbps

yes the GS is faster than the FS but as Naim streamers work around 31 Mpbs the FS is well able to handle it.

That said the Linn forum & the Swedish forum Lejonklou (also a Linn fan forum) both say the GS "sounds better".  Never tried it myself but they are quite adamant on this.

So if you can get it swapped with a full refund, & considering the diff is only a few squids,  I would change it.

Posted on: 09 October 2014 by John Byrne

Sorry, when I said 'F' meant 'slow' I was talking relative to 'G'

No need as Naim does not support gigabit Ethernet (don't know about Muso though). Also from a potential RFI point of view I say 100Mbps connections are preferable 1Gbps - albeit a 1Gbps port is designed to downgrade at sync time to 100Mbps if its peer is 100Mbps. A 100Mbps connection uses 4 wires, 1Gbps uses all 8 wires.

Interesting point. No doubt in future Gb will be achieved in a different way and less susceptible to RFI.

Maplin don't seem to sell the gigabit version in any case so I'll probably stick with what I've got and upgrade some time in future if I feel the need. a 5-port switch will always be useful somewhere.
