Raspberry Pi DAC?

Anyone tried making a DAC from a Raspberry Pi?
There are some options from Wolfson and Hifiberry which look good on paper. I'm curious about whether I could improve the sound of a UQ this way.
Anyone tried it?
Aren't they just options to add Soundcard / DAC functionality to the PI board when used as a streamer / player.
I'd stick with the UQ
