What playlists do you have ?

Posted by: Fretfan on 14 October 2014

Will all the talk of playlists re the new app, I am curious to know what playlists do you use ?

What themes and how many tracks...

Do you playlist by artist or by genre ?  or do you have a playlist for various tasks like working out, taking a bath, or even a romantic evening

I must be old fashioned, because I just like to select an album and let it play through (until I get bored and select another one).

Maybe I can get some ideas on how playlists would benefit me !!

Looking forward to your replies...

Like you, I don't have any. I don't really want any either. I nearly always listen to whole albums.

I generally play albums... but it is fun to have a few friends over and pass the iPad around and let everyone pick a song, and then pass it and repeat... building a playlist as you go. Makes for an interactive listening session and since everyone is involved in the music selection... fun for all.

I have two playlists for new albums. One is simply in date added order and the other is random.

I have a couple of random playlists that automatically refresh for when I just want the equivalent of a radio station.

I have a couple of playlists for more gentle stuff - Sunday morning maybe.

I mark quite a lot of favourite tracks as five stars. I then have a random playlist that selects from that.

I then have a few eclectic playlists that I add random things to that may follow a theme or diversion.

I very rarely use playlists: I'm another person who nearly always listens to full albums. The only time I use playlists is for social gatherings where I want music to suit the mood of the evening without having to think about it.

I do have a few playlists, although I only use them occasionally:

- a couple of playlists of favourite tracks that I like to play in 'shuffle' mode from time to time

- a couple of playlists which pull together a particular genre of music - eg 'Blues'

- a couple of playlists I very rarely use, but containing a mix of standard and hi-res music and which I tend to use for any odd system tests or comparisons (cables, interconnects etc) I might want to carry out.

- Finally, a playlist of tracks that just sound 'Good' when I want to reassure myself that I haven't wasted ridiculous amounts of money on my Hi-Fi "Hobby".

Cheers,

I don't use playlists. I have made sure that my whole collection is smartly organized (close to 4200 albums) and that does the job for me. I don't like shuffling of numbers - so that function is not relevant for me.

I have few in my iTunes but not on my HDX/ND5XS. Some I have done for friends others for occasions.  On the hdx I have one that mixes together the last two albums of Hugh Laurie and Tom Jones so a mix of blues and gospel with a few rockier tracks thrown in.

With the role out of the new NAIM app, I think I can now say that I definitely prefer the Naim app (on iPad) to the equivalent 'Kinsky' app from Linn.

As you could see from my profile, I have two main systems and a lot of my daytime listening is carried out using my non Naim system in my study. The Naim (streamer) system tends to get used more often in the evenings. The study system uses a Linn Klimax Renew DS streamer, but I don't use the iPad as a controller with that system. Kinsky is also supplied as a Windows PC/Laptop application and I use this app for my Linn based listening. The Windows Kinsky app is extremely flexible and user friendly when it comes to playlists. It is incredibly easy to create and delete playlists on the fly by simply dragging across albums or tracks using a mouse. So easy in fact that I use playlists (both temporary and permanent) on this system all the time. It would be really great if Naim were to come out with a similar Windows based app.

I HAD a couple of playlists before updating the n-Stream app.... One was created when having friends over, with different genres, but all tracks were really good. Another one was called "Dylan"...and was pretty comprehensive...

I should review my posts before submitting them - 'role' out?.

Hi Mr. Fretfan,

I use both Playlists and genres. Playlists I use in three ways:

  • For classical music to compare performances. I have many versions of Bach pieces (John's Passion, Matthew Passion, Goldberg Variations) and Mahler's symphonies. I like to compare the performances in terms of orchest performance, recording quality and artist style (especially piano players and choirs). I used to play piano myself so it’s very insightful to listen to different players.
  • Another example is combining Eric Clapton's "Sessions for Robert J" with the original songs from Robert Johnson, so first hearing the original from Robert, followed by Eric's interpretation 70 years later. Same I did for some multi-covered songs, such as “A change is gonna come” by Sam Cooke, which was covered by many artists.
  • My most common playlists are personal “Best of”, which I made for several artists. If you have >30 Bob Dylan albums, you certainly need a “Best of Bob” !

All my 1500 albums are sorted into some genres. Even within within albums, sometimes songs are put into different genres: many albums contain both 'upbeat' songs and ballads (Beatles albums are a good example for this), so I sort them accordingly.

I use genres for background listening: if I like to hear blues all Saturday, I simply start the "Blues" genre, press "all albums", "all tracks" and the random button. So much better than in the past, where I had to change CD’s every hour!

The sad story is that the new Naim app made them all unplayable, so I’m now waiting for Phil Harris’ support to get them working again...

Thanks Bert,  that is a very insightful way into using playlists.  I also like the idea of randomizing a genre.  I need to sort my genre's out..    I think that would make another topic,  as deciding what belongs to what genre could be a very daunting task !!

Fretfan,

You will be fine in tagging your music if you use the right software. I can recommend JRiver Media Centre which is very convient in sorting music in Artist, Album, Song, Genre etc. Renaming a genre or searching is very easy.

If you are a bit familiar with databases or Excel, it is not difficult. But I admit to "waste" a lot of evening in tagging my collection! I just enjoy to have my database in good order.

Have fun,
