Movember 2014

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 15 October 2014

Are any Forum members doing Movember this year? I've done it for the last two, and was thinking of giving it a miss this year. But the emails have started coming, and I don't think I can say no - even though I end up looking like Freddie Mercury, a Mexican or an 80's porn star, depending on your perspective. Men's health is so important, both mental and physical, and as well as raising awareness, Movember raises so much money to fund research and publicity. Hilary will not be pleased....

I dread to think what scratty horror I would create not shaving for a month.

I must admit I do get a bit of charity fatigue wih people doing various worthy/wacky things for their chosen causes. My wife did something one year with a very personal motivation and raised a great deal but she has carried on doing the event without asking for sponsors now. We felt we could/should not keep going back to the same people.

We make significant monthly donations to the charities of our choice and are happy to do that. Sure we could all do more.

I also had a bit of an issue with some of the Movember publicity material but I believe they have changed it in response to criticism. It failed to give an accurate view of the (admittedly nuanced) situation re prostate cancer 'screening'.

Sorry to be so miserable, it sounds that way doesn't it but did not really mean to!

I know exactly what you mean. I did it for two years and raised about £250 each time from work colleagues, but as you say we have dress down days, cake sales for charity, bike rides, runs etc etc. I give money to Water Aid every month, and this is a bit extra. When I have done it before I've never asked for cash - merely told people how they could give if they wished. It certainly gives people a laugh as the evenings draw in; it does look ridiculous. The worrying thing is, a few people last year said I looked better with it!
