Synology + Unitilite + IMac + limited knowledge = HELP!!

Posted by: dap1 on 19 October 2014

Had my UL for a year now , loved every minute of listening to it .. Well CD ,s and was using my iMac as my server ( didn't even know what they meant dec 2013 ) It,s been an ok ish experience but the last year has been a massive learning curve  ( protected files ) flacs apple lossless UPnP cpu NAS Not a clue but all I know is I love music and it was about time I got into the 21st century ...

I have come to a point where I haven't got the time  and I am spending hours trying to work out how to get my home network up and running . I,ve just bought a Synology NAS and have spent this weekend trying to set it up . I have managed to move my itunes library to another part of my mac and I have no idea how to move it back .. My UL won't find the NAS anyway and I am missing my children growing up  ..

Could anyone recommend or know of anyone in Essex who they have used to set up their network , Naim streamer  with  knowledge of Mac/ OSX ( as my macs now a write off ) .... I know there will be a cost but it's gotta be cheaper than divorce and I have spent so much time in the last days / months / year trying to get everything sorted its only a matter of time until wifey gets the hump. ...

I dont think an iphone connected to the back of my NAIM with a jack plug / analogue cable was the experience I was after

Another weekend of this and I,ll get my TRIO stack system out the loft. ....

THANKS

David

I suggest you speak to your local Naim dealer in the first instance.

Unfortunately I'm right the way across the country (Bath area).  You also haven't said what router / switch you're using

However there are a few pointers that may help

So assuming it's all connected (if it's not look at this...https://drive.google.com/file/...S28/view?usp=sharing) section 1.2 or 1.3.

1   If the MAC can't see the NAS drive, then there's a real problem or the NAS hasn't been initialised (follow its installation instructions - i.e. steps 2 and 3 below).

2   Install the Synology Assistant software on the MAC (f you haven't got the disk, you can download it from Synology's website).

3   Using the Synology Assistant format the NAS disk(s) and allow it to install the NAS operating system;

then wait up to 15 minutes for the network to catch up

4   Using the Synology Assistant, install the Media Library and Media Server packages.

5   Copy your music files to sub-folders in the 'Music' share on the NAS drive and they will be visible via UPnP.

Normally it 'just works' even on Windows PCs!
