Old Doctor Who
Posted by: Dungassin on 24 March 2011
I remember the series with the worms down in the mine really getting to me.
Was looking at some CDs today which had David Warner as the Dr, and David Tennant as a supporting character.
L-S, what a character - do you think they could get Rowan to take the re-introduced role!

At the risk of being accused of being a heretic I'll confess I prefer all the new doctors.
Having met Jon Pertwee on a couple of occasions and finding him a pompous, arrogant twit, rather put me off his portrayal of the good Doctor.
I haven't been ignoring this (my own thread), but Naim Forums wouldn't let me post a reply, stalling with the "cogwheels" on screen. I've now (by chance) discovered that I can post if I untick "Watch This Post".
Go figure ...
Anyway:
Richard : I watched the "Sea Devils" episodes today. I always have to contain my mirth with the Sea Devils, as the head is so obviously just a hat.
Tony : I never met Jon Pertwee, but for me the main problem with his run is the REALLY naff music, which seems to go for a far to "jokey" feel. I'm always half expecting him to do one of his funny voices, e.g. the stuttering admiral from "The Navy Lark".
Tom : Lethbridge-Stewart really only reminds me of Rowan Atkinson when he has a moustache. Clean-shaven (as in the "alternate fascist universe" episodes, he doesn't look much like him at all.

Still bothers me many years later.
The Autons also scared me at the time mainly due to the maniquins in a shop window at the end of Hounslow high street looking just like the scene where the Autons come to life and start running amock.

There's a lot to be scared of in Hounslow high street.
Hence my reluctance to re-visit the episodes now I'm (much) older. Probably best to keep the illusion intact. We all need our monsters...

My parents come from there and I used to go back to visit grandparents during the mid 60's to the early 70's. I doubt I would recognise much of it now.

Did the 'worms down the mine' have that horrible chant in it that went something like: 'Om....Om....Om idi adi Om?
Used to scare the it out of me.

No, that was the "Planet of the Spiders" story - Jon Pertwee's last outing as the Doctor. Watch this video from 23:30 onwards:

OK...but from behind the sofa with the sound turned down...
Don't remember ever hiding behind the sofa watching Dr Who (but then I was probably older than you when it started). Now, Quatermass and the Pit (original BBC) ... that was another matter.

Oh heavens, now you're talking really scared DG! It gave me nightmares for weeks.
Just reached "The Key To Time". What a gorgeous girl Mary Tamm was (is?). Probably the best-looking of the DW companions.
Well, finished the "classic" Doctor Who and dug out the new stuff (sad, eh?)
Just re-watched "Blink". What a superb episode. Still works even if you know exactly what's going to happen. Possibly the best episode ever - and he's hardly in it at all.
Suppose I should have started a new thread, but who cares?
I'm another 'worms down the mine' man. Cold sweat just thinking about it. If I touch anything slimey in garden I have to check an hour later to see if I'm mutating into it...
