NDX too hot, and shuts down output?

Posted by: Ralph Ho on 21 October 2014

After powering on NDX for around 1 day, I touch the casing and it is very warm. When I listen music through UPNP, NDX stops analog and digital output. I link NDX with nDAC and I notice SYNC light on nDAC is off. The funny thing is if I switch to FM on NDX, there is analog or digital output again. Please refer to my video on Youtube for real situation ( http://youtu.be/pt6o_BpuaXg ).

Is this problem because of too hot of NDX or other potential issues? Anyone here has the similar experience?

Something is not right, the NDX casing shouldn't be very warm.. I would contact Naim support?

once the UPnP input has connected and some media played, the NDX clock should remain synced to that media sample rate, even once the media has stopped playing.

Streamer temps have been talked about on the forum before & some peeps perception of hot means its running warmer than the amp.

I am not saying this is your problem - far from it - the fact that its cutting out means something is seriously wrong & 100% agree with Simon you need to call Naim.

Just as a reference ...... My NDX runs warmer than the room ambient, the casing temp is 36'c (98'f) measured on the top centre, the room is 20'c (68'f).

Ralph, this doesn't sound right at all. Warm is fine and under certain circumstances it can get noticeably warm to the touch.  However, note that the casework is the heatsink and the streamer module is packed with ICs that need the casework to dissipate heat.  So if you have the NDX with lots of kit on top of it, that's not ideal. Anyway, I've flagged it for any Tech support input, otherwise it's best to contract your supplying dealer.  Out of interest, what happens if you use the NDX just as a DAC?

Hi Richard,

Once there was no digital output to nDAC, I linked NDX directly to 282 and used NDX's analog output. However, it showed the same problem. There was no analog output. Nevertheless, NDX still can play FM music without any problem under both scenario.

My NDX’s temperature is probably same as Mike-B’s. I powered of NDX two days ago and powered on in this morning. UPNP function has been fine till now (last 8 hours). As mentioned on my original post, my NDX could probably work around 24 hours before it stops analog/digital output. That is why I suspect whether it is some kind of safety function which is designed to protect NDX.

OK thanks Ralph.  As I say, I've flagged this for some Tech support input.  Let's see whether Phil and the team at Naim can come up with any ideas.  Otherwise, it's time to get in touch with your supplying dealer and take it from there.
