Radio popping

Where has pauls sticky post gone? Radio 2 is still popping. What happened with the bbc?

Posted on: 22 October 2014 by Mike-B

It's a BBC problem, it's the same on FM

Posted on: 22 October 2014 by Mr Happy

Thanks for the reply Mike. I would have thought that naim would have put a sticky post up as they were looking into it. I listened to radio 2 fm today in the car and got no popping but tonight at home on the nds its still popping. Just been out to car and fm is still fine.

This is really irritating.

On FM it's not so much a pop, more like a millisecond stop in TX

Posted on: 22 October 2014 by KRM

The popping you are hearing is the DAC struggling ti sync properly with the broadcast so it would be surprising if it happened on FM.

If you don't want to wait for Naim to sort it out then check out the BBC 6 Music thread from a couple of days ago. There are sometimes higher quality broadcasts available which have to be added manually.

Thanks Keith. I looked at the thread and tried to find the relevant information to get a radio 2 stream that doesnt have the popping, as you done with radio 6. I managed to log into v radio successfully. The problem is that I cant find the info needed to fill the boxes in the add your own station part.

Hi Mike, I didnt notice anything on fm radio 2 today, and I was listening for it to see if it would happen on fm. However, when streaming it is very noticable. Its like listening to a scratched vinyl lp.

The FM problem is a momentary stop in transmission, maybe every few minutes or even 10's of minutes.

However I can't hear anything like you describe on iRadio - shame about the "music" they have running at mo'  :-(   dance is not my idea of late night listening.

The popping is the DAC re-locking onto the digital feed. Basically, the DAC is continuously losing synchronisation with the broadcast. You won't get this with FM because it is analogue.

The radiofeed.co.uk website shows one WMA and two AAC feeds. Play the AAC 128 feed then paste the URL into the Naim vTunerAdd Station page. Select AAC, give it a name that allows you to tell it apart from the default WMA feed. Done.

No problems this morning - not that I heard it yesterday

I'm on vTuner WMA 128kbs

I do know the diff between FM & www - I worked on radio when it was called wireless & was steam powered.

I was just saying FM is/was having momentary TX break problems,  it might be indicative of something in auntie Beebs bowels,  maybe not.

FM also seems OK today

Well, ive tried to add the address of radio 2 aac, cut and pasted from the address bar of radiofeeds.co.uk. The problem is that its not showing up in the naim app anywhere under radio stations.

I created a naim v tuner account using the mac address from my nds, and strangely it identified it as a uniqute I believe. I checked the mac address again and it was definately correct.

What have I done wrong? Am I missing something?

Posted on: 25 October 2014 by Mike-B

Not sure what your problem is

On Naim iRadio "most popular" is BBC-2

Its WMA not ACC, I'm listening now!!!

That at said its popping, it comes & goes, high volume or low, sometimes nothing for 2 3 our more tracks, but yes I now hear it.

Hi Mike,

That is exactly what is happening to R2 for me at the moment on that WMA feed. In Keiths post above he says that the AAC stream is clear of the popping, and that is what I am having problems with trying to install on the naim v tuner page.

Posted on: 26 October 2014 by Mike-B

Haven't heard it this morning,  but here's hoping someone at Naim and/or vTuner pick up on this thread & looks into it.

TBH I invariably play R-2 on my NAT-05,  but will enable the AAC feed to try it when I get a free moment.

Hi Mr Happy,

Does it not appear in Added Stations on the app?

Hi Keith,

Ive looked in every section of the radio lists in the app, including added stations, and its not there

Oh dear, very frustrating.

Is it showing In My Added Stations in myradio.naimaudio.com?

AAC definitely gives better results. I notice Radios 3 and 4 both default to AAC.

I use Dab on my unitiqute for this very reason. iradio quality is not very good

Posted on: 26 October 2014 by Mr Happy

Where it asks for station url, I entered "http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/5/select/mediaset/http-icy-aac-lc-a/vpid/bbc_radio_two/supplier/ll_icy2/format/pls.pls". This was cut and pasted as the feed was streaming on radiofeeds.co.uk. Does this look correct?

I notice that Naim have added the AAC feed for BBC 6 Music to the Naim's Choice list of stations on the standard iRadio menus which should save people a lot of hassle.

Maybe be they could do the same for the Radio 2 one?

However, got mine working as an "added station" and is now working fine.

Posted on: 26 October 2014 by KRM

Well I'm blowed!

They should add BBC 5Live too.

The URL for Radio 2 is:

http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/med..._icy2/format/pls.pls

So yes, you have the right one.

I've just successfully added it.

Hi Raider,

Internet radio is theoretically capable of better sound quality than DAB because the latter has limited bandwidth which has to shared by loads of stations. The Beeb, in its wisdom, chooses to limit its internet broadcasts, reasoning that this will make us love ("the sweet sound of") digital, thus allowing them to switch off FM. Some conspiracy theories are depressingly plausible!

Your right, the WMA feed does pop and buffers at 90%.The AAC doesn't pop and stays at 100%.

Posted on: 26 October 2014 by Mr Happy

Ok, just tried adding it again. Success! I dont know what went wrong last time but it has now added and appears on the app, and best of all....radio 2 without popping sound for the first time in weeks. I can now fully enjoy the radio on my new nds.

Still a bit confused as to why the vtuner account picks up my nds mac address as a uniqute?

Thanks Keith

Happy Listening Clyde :-)

If you're a sports fan you might want to add BBC 5 Live Extra. The vTuner defaults to 48khz, but you can get it at 128khz on AAC. Talksport is only available at 32khz - eek!

I take that back. Just added BBC Radio 2 acc and Radio 5 Live acc and the quality is very good indeed. I did not know how to add the stations until I read this post. Thank you KRM for the instruction.
