Hi Res not lighting up the lights

Posted by: Nagual on 02 November 2014

Hi all

I recently bought bunch of albums from the Qobuz website in hi res.  For the most part everything is playing beautifully. Two of the albums, Art Official Age and PlectrumElectrum, by Prince are in 24/44.1 FLAC  and when played fail to light up the HD light on the nDAC.  Is there any particular reason for this that forum members can think of and what might be the solution ?

Is it the same problem as the 24/176 issue with the HDX chipset?

many thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this issue.

44.1 khz will not light the hd indicator regardless if 16-bit or 24-bit

it needs to be above 48 khz so 88.2 or higher.

Thanks for the reply Aleg.  Thats interesting, so i'm not listening to any dumbed down resolution its simply not high enough to register as HD on the DAC.  Having paid 16.80 gbp per album that is a bit disappointing. The Dirty Mind album was 24/96 and 3 quid cheaper.

It's the same with The Beatles hi res stick, but they still sound very good.

If you have the latest version of the Naim App then it will tell you the resolution of what is playing.

This came up recently for someone else, and I'd experienced this also - my streaming software, JRiver Media Center, got set to stream MP3.  Some NAS's do this also. So, check your settings.

If someone is interested in the prince albums. On quobuz it is very expensive. Check out this shop instead (right from the source): http://prince.warnerartists.net/eu (The only disadvantage is that it is wav and not tagged. I had to convert it manually to flac and name and tag the tracks.)

Why are HD tracks often sold for so much money? Is it really worth the money? I have these two prince albums and Jack Whites Lazaretto in HD. I tried to resample them down to 44.1 kHz 16 bit and I only can believe that maybe I hear a slightly difference. (The high frequencies might sound a little bit smoother in HD. But I could not win a blind contest on this.) Which recording is so good that CD technology is not good enough? Does anybody have a recommendation what I should check out? (Listening with uniti 1 and Neat Motive 1 speakers.)

And also very often the mp3 versions of an album are more expensive than the CD somewhere else (e.g. on amazon marketplace). So I prefere the CD version and rip it myself. On (IIRC) bleep.com I saw some CDs sold with a discount, but the digital downloads kept the original price so they did cost twice as much. Isn't this unlogical?

To correct myself: hdtracks.de had the extreme high price: 21€ each(!) album instead 9,99€

Nagual, regarding the 24/96 recordings of old prince albums: Do you hear a difference to the CD version? Is it remastered?

Hi Gert

As far as i know they aren't remastered,  I haven't done any direct comparisons yet but they do sound exceptionally clear.  Though I find the Prince CD's i own have always sounded good and well recorded.  My experience with HD tracks is mixed.  The Doors Boxset in HD sound great but they the latest CD pressing i also own are fantastic also.  The Carpenter's Singles album in HD is on a different lvl to the CD i own.  The detail, the bass lines everything is resolved at a much higher level, extremely clear and more tuneful and musical to my ears.  Same goes for Hot Rocks by the Rolling Stones.
