Opera Tagging Pain

I have just downloaded a recording of The Marriage of Figaro from HD Tracks. There are 80+ tracks, and each has a different name in the 'Artist' column when I load it into MP3Tag.

I need to change the artist field so that each track is the same, in order to keep the whole work together in Nserve. Does anyone know whether there is a global replace option in MP3Tag (or some other program), to avoid having to copy and paste 80+ times?

David - I have just struggled with this for some recent Qobuz Maria Callas downloads. In the end I kept the Artists field as is because it gives an accurate reflection of which singers appear on each particular track.

In Album Artist - I kept Maria Callas (or in other cases the main artist assuming there is one). I use LMS for Squeezeboxes and I believe it is Album Artist that drives the grouping so all is good. It should also stay together by 'Album'.

Is there a way to have the Naim software point to 'Album Artist' or 'Album' - as opposed to 'Artist'?

I also filled in extended tags for Orchestra, Conductor etc., should I need those down the road.

In answer to your original question to do a global replace in MP3Tag is very simple. You would just highlight all tracks on the right pane (shift and scroll - I think). While they are highlighted just change the field or fields on the left pane (this is usually handy for changing common fields like date, genre, Album Artist, or entering a comment, etc., or Artist in your case). Once you type in the changes you have to click on the save icon on the top left of the screen for it to take effect.

Hope that helps

Control + A is the normal shortcut to select all tracks. You should then be able to edit the Artist in the tag edit pane. If you need to edit or add any extended tags use Alt + T to access the extended tag dialog box.

Thanks Guys.

The Naim software is not adjustable, according to Phil Harris.

I tried, but failed, to follow the instructions above re Mp3tag.

However, I came across another program called Mp3tag Express and managed it. The program is free for a week, and $19.95 one-off thereafter.

Now happily listening - it's Teodor Currentzis/Musicaeterna at 96/24, very entertaining.

I often use MP3Tag, and can confirm that using <CTRL-A> to select all, editing in the left pane then saving works.

Did you remember to save the changes?  Whenever it's not worked for me it's because I forgot to hit the save icon (or do a <CTRL-S>.

Thanks for the 'Ctrl-A' tip chaps. I didn't know that shortcut. So much easier than manually highlighting all the tracks. And yes 'Save' is easy to forget sometimes.

If I want to change a whole series of tags, I highlight the tracks I want to change, then right-click on one of them and choose Extended Tags.  You can then double-click the tag group you want to change (eg Artist) and make your changes in one hit there.  Hope this helps.

Wow, it's kind of bizarre that Nserve won't keep an album together in the correct order if the tracks have different artists. That would be a deal breaker for me as very many albums have different artists listed for the individual tracks. The whole "feat. xxx" thing in popular music has just added to this. Even the oft-maligned iTunes manages this issue effortlessly.
