Endless River

i am going to buy the high res version of this album later today and thought the event itself of a new Pink Floyd album would be reason enough to collect listening experiences from all of you. I wil of course also reflect my listening experience.
A first crazy thought would be to connect 100 Muso's and let them together play the album......
I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed!
I think you might be right Hot Rats
Its Pink Floyd so fans like me will get it warts & all, but after hearing about 20 minutes of MP3 tracks last week I don't think we will all be anticipating towards an evening of listening to it like we all do with the likes of DSOTM & Wall etc.
The tracks are out-takes that were not used (mostly for MB) & what I heard did not seem to be particularly well integrated. All but one tracks are instrumental & focused on Richard Wright material.
Next question - who is selling hi-res downloads apart from Qobuz
Is HDTracks on the case for the HiRes version?
The endless gravy train...

High res audio is selling them in HD. And I fear you might be right, but I will still buy it.....
Hi Bert, yes Highresaudio is selling it in HD but with "regional restrictions"
No problems for me as I have IP trickery that I use with HDT (USA) but HRA price is more or less the same as Qobuz so not worth the bother
Now about pricing
Last week Qobus had it showing as £16.99GBP, now its £19.99 (24/96 deluxe version)
Amazon have CD at £9 & £12.99 for the deluxe (extra tracks) version & that includes a video
Like GraemeH posted "The Endless Gravy Train"
The question for me is vinyl or CD? Pink Floyd sounds very good on CD and it's about 1/3 the price of vinyl. Plus you'll get continuous play without having to flip 4 LPs. It doesn't sound like this one is destined to be a classic.
Will you guys stop putting a jinx on the damn album. I ordered the vinyl and im not so sure it will be any good either. I hate leftovers from other albums but sometimes they end up being good albums like Physical Graffiti, Tattoo You, etc... Mind you, I saw Gilmour on Jools the other day and the man himself did not sound that enthusiastic either. Not very good at selling his fish!
Well i just listened to it and i really like it. What were we expecting - DSOTM mark 2? - Meddles? Well I wasn't anyway, what I have is a really good record, maybe not as iconic as earlier stuff but i for one am really glad that they released it and I am sure it will get lots of listens be it more as a solitary affair rather than at a full on party (but is PF ever?). its pretty chilled out so dont expecting to be throwin' any shapes.....
on vinyl
Tony, don't get me wrong, some of the tracks I heard were good classic PF & it was nice to hear more of the genius of Rick out front rather than in the mix. I said they did not seem well integrated, maybe better said it sounded like a series of individual tracks rather than a themed whole album work as with DSOTM & Wall etc. But whatever we will all be getting it as its Pink Floyd & then we will be better able to form our own individual opinions.
I too saw David on Jools & also listen to him on R-2 with Chris Evans, yer right he can't sell fish.
I'll take the gnome every time!

I agree, also a bit like the Grateful Dead.

That was not directed at you Mike. Sorry if I gave that impression. Last album I bought by them was The Final C..T and I lived to regret to this day. I gave it away to some poor sod. Looking forward to this one.

Now you've rattled my cage!
Yeah the Dead are stil releasing a lot of old stuff but they're also still giving a lot of stuff away. A track (or mini compilation) every day this month on their official site. There's endless free stuff available on Archive, Wolfgang's Vault etc. and they've never tried to take any of it down. All the band members' sites have lots of free downloads of the new music they are making. Sure they market overpriced box sets as well but they always sell out so someone must want them.
Love and Peace
Not at all Tony, I read your post & then re-read mine & it was not how I meant it to read. So thanks for the prompt so I was able to get my words straightened out a bit.

There are obviously many GD completists still around. I used to be one of them until they started releasing limited edition box sets that required the purchaser to acquire a new mortgage! Do people remember the days when 4CD issues of 'Dick's Picks' could be bought for less than £20. I had a friend who worked for a small record company in the UK who were responsible for releasing the early volumes of 'Dick's Picks' in the UK. She told me that after Jerry Garcia passed, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir tried to renegotiate the 'Dick's Picks' deal as aggressively as possible. My friend said that their representatives were unpleasant and in the end the small record company withdrew from the deal altogether. The free material that can be found online seems to be MP3 format. The FLACs of live concert material were pulled some time ago I believe. I am of the opinion that the spirit of The Dead passed with Jerry and that after his death they became the Ungrateful Dead. I am glad that, apart from a questionable and possibly unethical release programme, they are gone. Let's hope, to paraphrase the lyrics of 'She's Gone', "nothing's gonna bring them back".
I don't see any harm in the release of 'The Endless River'. I found it interesting although not particularly impressive. There is probably much better material lurking in the PF vaults but it may be difficult to get approval from the three living members of the former lineups to agree to its release.
Other bands still release large sets of archive material. There was recently that band from Liverpool. They re-released all their albums on vinyl and even in mono ... What a bunch of con artists! (LOL)
Listened to a piece of it yesterday evening. On the one hand I was a bit disappointed as it sounded like a built up to a climax but the climax never came as in the old PF days. On the other hand I liked some bits and pieces. I guess it requires a couple of runs more to see what it will do on my NAS in the future - closet hideout or in the every now and then league .....

Up to the mid point of the Road Series I collected everything I could find of the Grateful Dead. I realised that the barrel was being scraped about the mid point of this series and all I have got since then is the complete Europe 72 box set and the release in 2013 of Sunshine Daydream, also from 1972. To me the Dead lost it before Garcia died. I saw them twice in 1990 at Wembley and what a disappointment compared to 1980 and 1974, I could not afford 1972 and earlier.
Yes I agree that the freely available stuff is interesting but I only really bother now with the free downloads from their own site.
Sad really but I prefer to listen to them when they were at the top of their game which for me is pre 1980.
Just out of interest was the small record company Ace?
I'm sure it will be fine, bits and pieces maybe, so was Final Cut (not one of my favs though).
Probably a less good album from PF will be a lot better than the best from many artists favoured here.
PF have to re-release another 10 or 15 times to catch up with the Beatles money conveyor belt.
Last week Qobus had it showing as £16.99GBP, now its £19.99 (24/96 deluxe version)
Amazon have CD at £9 & £12.99 for the deluxe (extra tracks) version & that includes a video
Hey you Dead fans, thread robbery going on or what, Endless River only here please.
I need to back off on my Qobuz Endless River pricing rant
The DELUXE version contains 6 video clips, so unless you weally weally want the video stuff, you can save a few bucks by getting the non-deluxe copy.
The regular album has 18 tracks of audio with a duration of 00:52:47
£16.79 for 24/96
£14.55 for 16/44.1
The deluxe has the same 18 tracks plus 3 more with the video totalling 21 tracks & a duration of 01:04:55
£19.64 for 24/96
£17.20 for 16/44.1
I've yet to find another download except iToons & HighResAudio (with regional restrictions).
Guess others will pop up on Monday
Today I bought the deluxe box set from my local CD/Record store for around $25 after membership discount.. It says on the back "All audio in 96 kHz/24bit". Does this apply to the tracks on CD?
CD can only be 44/16, there is not enough space for anything else
HDCD has the space for 44/24
Reading the blurb on the Pink Floyd www,
96/24 is on Blu Ray
48/24 is on DVD
My vinyl copy arrives Monday. I'm wondering if it would make more sense to have bought the hi res download from Qobuz. Oh! Did I really say that?
I'm not expecting it to be a classic but I've liked the few tracks I've heard on the radio.
Nasty review in 'The Independent' which, strangely, makes me want to get it. A bit of a gitty predictable opinion piece.
As a serial completist...I even have 'Genesis' first offering (nothing after 'Then....' mind. One has to draw the line somewhere).
