Breaks between tracks revisited

Posted by: John Treble on 08 November 2014

I thought this had been laid to rest  in the previous thread (May 9 2014 - Breaks between tracks), but I have just been listening to Alina Ibragimova's recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and there it was again - a break where there shouldn't be one between the first and second movements. It has reappeared in the Buxtehude that I gave as an example in the previous thread as well.

Could this be something to do with the fact that I have been using Asset Control instead of n-stream?

(I maybe should add that I have been doing this because for some reason n-stream refuses to recognise the presence of my NDX, where Asset Control, running on my PC laptop has no such problem.)

I have been using Asset Control on my laptop (Windows 7 x64) and although it is potentially a great wee program, especially at finding my UQ and my music stored and the NAS, I have found it pretty buggy. Buggy also at playing ‘gapless’.

I have had much better results with “Audionet RPC” for the laptop and with Audionet aMM for Android. These Audionet proggies do take their time to find your gear on the network though but ones ‘in business’ they perform fine.

Maybe worth a try John.

My understanding is the naim streamer needs to handle the gapless situation.

Try playing the album using the NDX remote control - a pain though that is. I suspect there will be no gap issues. If that's the case, resolve the network issues that prevent the nStream working.

When I set up my system I used an arrangement recommended to me on here. I run a lead from the router to a switch, into which is connected the SuperUniti, UnitiServe and nas, all of which have fixed IP addresses. Also plugged into the switch is an airport express, giving a wireless network dedicated to the HIFi. NStream connects into that, and I've had no problems in getting consistent operation.

Yes the streamer handles gapless & the OP's NDX does for sure - my NDX does,  but the media server has to support the function as well.

There is no reason at all why your nStream does not see your NDX if its set up right,  & there might lie a clue to the problem.

What are your music files stored on ??  do I understand its your PC ??

I would look into the Asset functionality & whatever you store music on,  you might not have the right set up to communicate correctly with the NDX so the nStream & the gapless functionality don't work.

If you can tell us how you have your system set up - NDX - music store - wireless router - hows it all connected (wired or wireless)

My system is wired using homeplugs, except for control which up until recently has worked satisfactorily using an iPad communicating with Cisco WAP's. It consists of an AssetNAS, which is where my files are stored, an NDX and a NAIT XS2. I have recently added a Unitiqute. The router is a Buffalo AirStation, which is dedicated to the audio system. There is also a switch in each of the two rooms where it currently resides. (The NAS can't be plugged into the same switch as the other devices, because it is in a different room.) The setup was originally done by the local Naim dealer, so should be basically OK.

I first noticed the problem with breaks last May. I posted here, and was advised that I needed to upgrade the NDX firmware. The dealer confirmed that this would solve the problem. and indeed it did  - until a couple of days ago, when the problem with the iPad/n-stream/NDX communication started, and I looked around for alternative control software. I downloaded Asset Control and was surprised to find that the problem with breaks had reappeared, because no one had mentioned on the previous occasion that the control software may be implicated as well.  Last night I replaced n-stream with mu-so on my iPad. It seems to have fixed the communication problem and plays without breaks, so I am supposing now that the communication problem lies in n-stream, which I do not intend to use any more. So I guess that's problem solved - although I'd like to understand better what might be going on.

On the whole, I would prefer to use my laptop alone rather than juggle two computers, which is one reason to prefer Asset Control, but as Flo-TLSC says, it is not free of bugs. I'll try the Audionet software you mentioned. Thanks for the tip.

And thanks to you all for your attention.
