Mu-so vs BBC

Posted by: Jason Milner on 09 November 2014

Finally dipped my toe into the world of streaming audio, & bought a Mu-so.

Right from the start, I was impressed. Little details like the thought that went into the packing, inserting little spacers into the gaps between the outermost fins at the back to prevent them from bending in transit - nicely thought through.

So far in use, it's clearly deserving of all its positive reviews, with excellent SQ & high WAF too , however there have been a couple of issues that I'm hoping to resolve with a little help from you guys...

  1. BBC Internet radio. So far I've tried Radio 2 and Radio 4, & both only seem to work intermittently. They seem okay in the evening, but not in the morning. Most other stations are OK, although it did once refuse to play the 320K Naim Radio. Has anyone else encountered that? Any idea on a solution?
  2. Turning on by itself. Leaving the house yesterday, I turned it to standby mode via the Android app. Before I'd left the house it turned itself on again. I walked over and turned it off, then left. When I got home, my partner told me it was on when she got home. Any suggestions?

Have you guys connected to R-2 in the iRadio folder "Naim's Choice"

Its 128kbs AAC  & AFAIK is as good as it gets with 100% buffer all the time.

Hi Jason,

It sounds like a wifi problem. Every radio station I choose to play does so continuously, as does Airplay etc. The only exception to the rule is, as the MuSo is currently housed in the kitchen while I decorate the room it's intended for, when my wife uses the Microwave.

I can't answer your second question but haven't experienced the problem myself.

Hi Mike-B,
Thank you so much.Radio 2 now playing faultless after selecting off naim choice. To be honest I didn't even think of looking there for it.
Thanks again

Different radio codec, perhaps?

Jason suppose first question is where are you based, Uk?

we know that BBC were rebooting the servers this weekend to sort out the popping, so maybe this is timing.

Third point – turning on by itself – this is normally when something else occurred, another app connecting (or even same one if the app tried to connect even for a second), someone used remote (or sat on it) etc?

Thanks all for your replies. I'm actually away from home for today, but will test out your suggestions when I get home tomorrow evening.

in reply to the questions you've asked...

The mu-so is connected via Ethernet

We live in London (Hackney)

I've installed the app on 3 devices, an Android phone, and two iPads. As far as I'm aware we've not accidentally triggered any of them, and so far we've not used the remote, but I'll keep a close watch to see what's going on if it happens again.

Many thanks Paul, will do!

Well. I tried the BBC radio stations again today. First off I re-tested - nope. Still not working

Then I replaced the existing presets with what appeared to be identical versions sourced from the "Naim's Choice" folder - bingo - it now works

Not sure exactly where I found the previous links - the names are identical (these are the 128k versions), but I'm happy that they're working. Also, so far, there's been no repeat of the random turning on issue. Will keep tabs on that for a while, but for now it's looking (and more importantly, sounding) good!  Thanks again for all of your help!

Hi Jason,

A possible reason for the muso turning itself on could be a power cut. We just had a power cut for a few seconds and when the power came back on my streamer started playing the radio, even though it wasnt playing before the power out.

Hi all. Belated update to this post. Annoyingly, the fix I tried last month didn't take, and a few hours later, it had "lost" the BBC stations again. Things have been a little hectic lately, so I hadn't had the time to mail the support guys, but I finally got round to it on Sunday evening, & by mid-day on Monday I received a solution from the extremely helpful Phil Harris (thanks again Phil). I tested it out on Monday evening and as at now, it's still working, so both I and my (occasionally app-phobic) partner are now happy bunnies. I've pasted Phil's solution below in case it is of use to anyone else.

...We are aware of this issue and are looking into it … if you set the preset from the BBC Radio station itself (Location -> Europe -> UK -> All Stations -> BBC Radio… ) then it will work correctly.

At the moment we don’t know for certain what the issue is but we believe it is down to changes that are being made by the Beeb on their streaming stations...

Hello all....First post from a new Mu-So owner here. I'm afraid that solution doesn't work for me. The least worse option in my case is to select from Naim Choices. It connects more times than not in that instance. If the station is then added to presets, the connection seems to fail when selecting it from presets in the future. This suggests that the app might be contributing to the issue rather than being a solely BBC fault?
