UQ2: 24/192 breakup
Posted by: JSH on 10 November 2014
I have some 24/192 files. When I try to stream them they break up every 10 seconds or so with the buffer showing 0% until it replenishes itself for another few seconds.
I use Minim UpNP, with files stored on WD NAS (and another XHD running through a Dell) driven through a BT HomeHub5 router into my UQ2. 24/96 files do not pose a problem
Is there anything I can do?
Add a switch to handle the NAS and UQ rather than connecting directly to the HH. See Mikes comments here
Thanks for your help James. I've read that thread twice and I'm still not sure I understand it. No, wrong: I'm sure I don't!!
Essentially, it seems I insert a switch into the HH which then is wired to the UQ and NAS; yes? if so, because of the layout of our house this would be a non-starter.
Ah i see, you're going wireless from the HH to the UQ. I don't think wireless is recommended for streaming 24/192 files
Aha. Thank you James. Very clear. Basically then spending on 24/192 files is a waste of money for me unless I use the USB, which Simon tells us sounds worse, and I'm better buying 24/96 which I can route wirelessly and successfully
Have you tried them via USB. Always worth checking that for yourself
Edit - i see from the other thread you already have but yes if you find 24/96 works well then that's a good upper limit to have.
There are many opinions about 24/96 vs 24/192.
You should try the ones you have from a memory stick and decide for yourself. Personally I like the USB direct. A 128 GB stick isn't that expensive and you can still get usb2.0 ones.
I used to have this problem with 24/192 files streaming wirelessly from Unitiserve to Superuniti. What solved it for me was to put an Airport Express next to my Superuniti and connect them with a short Ethernet cable. The AE picked up the wireless signal with no problem where the SU was unable to.
I have subsequently gone one stage further, and added an unmanaged switch. This connects via 3 ethernet cables to the AE, SU and US. I could thus move the US (equivalent to your NAS) close enough to the streamer to have a short wired connection, yet all the devices can still connect to the internet via the AE wifi. This has given me a reliable connection, 24/192 streaming, and a BIG improvement in sound quality, so I'd recommend trying it to anyone who thinks they can't manage to instal an ethernet cable for streaming.
Sorry, a supplementary.
If I convert those files from 24/192 to 24/96 in Foobar I presume I will lose SQ.
Does the same apply to 24/176 SACD files ripped from a PS if I convert to 24/88
Thanks to everyone for your help. I will try the USB route but the AE fascinates; I might go there
The best answer, if you can do it, is to install a separate switch and use wired Ethernet all the way from the NAS to the UQ2. With this set-up you are unlikely to get drop-outs and will maximise SQ in other ways as well.
