Naim app iOS version 4.2
Posted by: TJ on 11 November 2014
The latest update has just been released to the app store, here are a list of the major changes.
Fixed: iRadio browsing could sometimes be slow
Fixed: Text field overlaps when entering playlist name
Fixed: Rovi popovers are created much too small
Fixed: UPnP Album view. Rovi button sometimes is visible but cannot be pressed
Fixed: Clear image cache setting is missing
Fixed: UPnP “play now” starts at track 2
Fixed: USB input is missing repeat and random
Fixed: Volume control would sometimes be unresponsive on iRadio or UPnP input
ken, did you upgrade to ios8 at about the same time as n-Stream to the new naim app? I'm not pointing the finger at iOS8 but there are various grumblings online about ios8 network issues and the naim app came out within 2 days of the iOS8 upgrade!
Bill, Infuse actually allows you to browse content as well as indicating if discovery works. Did you try clearing the UPnP cache on the naim app? settings > input settings > UPnP > clear cache

I have downloaded InFuse and yes I can see the content on my upnp servers but not play it, I thought it would. Maybe it does not support FLAC. Still I can use 8player to play music on my iPad from my servers.
When you say 'clearing the upnp cache' then that seems to be an option that has disappeared. If it the options button on the main screen I see the following options:
Alarm Clock
Styles
Input Settings
Audio Settings
Other Settings
About
Other settings gives me:
Amazon store
Stay connected
Use streamer's language
Clear image cache
Reset app
But no 'clear cache' - I assume it has now been renamed to one of the last two options. Certainly reset app does not clear and I have not tries 'clear image cache' next time it goes I will. No I have to kill the app within IOS to clear the problem.
ps have just tried 'clear image cache' and no go I am afraid.
btw what is recommended version of streamer software to run? I am running 3.22.000.

Hi TJ,
yes, i upgraded to iOS8 about the same time as upgrade to Naim app 4.1. if this is a probable cause, do you guys have any workarounds for the known issues so that i can get back to some normality?
by the way, i have just gone through another round of re-boots; this time i powered down iPad, NDS, Unitiserve, and then the router and then powered up with about 5 minutes between each power-up, router, Unitiserve, NDS and then finally the iPad. When i press the UPnP button, now this iPad is locked with the cursor drawing an infuriating 'wait' circle in the middle of the screen -- i suppose Apple's equivalent of the windows hourglass.
any more clues? IP addresses? or?
enjoy...

PS. Great to see you back Ken.

Don't know about the maths lessons at school (I quite enjoyed those) but I very much agree with your essential point, Peter. This and similar threads in the 'streaming' section provide a strong disincentive to we CD luddites to convert to the 'modern' streaming school.
Funny, but I've never had a problem "discovering" my CD player.

Whether you choose Clear UPnP cache via the Imput Settings or Clear Image cache via Other Settings You get the same "Emptying Image Cache Please wait" message. It's not clear then whether the UPnP cache is being cleared at all.

Yes Mike, maths was never really one of my strong subjects hence still dabbling on a base unit, but hey I can even find my 555 in the dark ! Hope you are ok Peter
I've had the spinning circle issue too when attempting to connect to a NAS. I've found that by selecting iRadio as a source briefly and then going back and selecting the NAS as a source seems to sort it out. (iPad Air, iOS 8.1, ND5 XS, Synology 213j, Minimserver).

Oh, and nice to see you back from me too Ken!

Streaming can be as easy or complicated as you want to make it. This is an enthusiasts' Forum and many people posting on here are basically playing around with possibilities - including ways of enjoying music beyond the dreams of those tied to "hard media" of whatever type. To claim that the sort of issues discussed here are typical of the streaming experience is like claiming a record won't play if the VTA is 1 degree out.
I still love my LP12 but I'll never miss my CDS2 - streaming is so much easier.

Hi Pev.
Thanks for your encouragement but TBH I don't miss my CDS 2 either ! ATB Peter
Touche!

Thanks again TJ, will try this now...

News to me! Is it that because you can't find a buyer for the 555?
Bill, look under input settings>upnp
Hi TJ,
Just tried the above suggestion a few times now and i am afraid no luck. i still get the annoying "going round in circles" cursor when i invoke UPnP.
any other ideas?
many thanks

No criticism intended towards you and other 'streamers', Pev. Indeed I'm somewhat envious of your computing skills. But the language/jargon is pretty daunting to simpletons like myself. My idea of PnP is 'plug' the CD into the CDP and hit 'play'. I like boringly reliable!
Hi TJ, I don't have compatibility mode turned on. My Unitiserve and Superuniti are behaving themselves and UPnP playlack works fine.
This is getting stranger still! As I said, all my playlists were created in 4.1, but were empty in 4.2 at first. Now, however, if I try to open them I get a message saying 'Playlist full. No further tracks can be added.' I can't play, edit, delete or view them. The same applies to a new playlist I tried to create in 4.2.
@ ken. Not sure what to suggest. Something on your network is blocking the discovery messages from getting to the iPad. You could try changing the ip address of the iPad or configuring the router to always allocate the same IP address to the iPad. Maybe look at the router config to see if there is anything UPnP/wifi related that might affect things. Maybe even swap out the router as a test to see if it changes things. I know all this is a pain!
@ ChrisSU, Empty as in you could select the PL but there were no tracks? Could you send me one of the misbehaving playlists (connect iPad to iTunes to copy ,nmpl PL files out)

TJ, I hope Naim pay you a good overtime rate!!!
If I tap on the 3 dots on the top right of the screen, I can see the titles of all the playlists. If I tap on any of those, nothing happens except that I get the error message I mentioned above.

thanks for your help. i am also quite lost about what's going on here.
in relation to " ... Something on your network is blocking the discovery messages from getting to the iPad.".
I can report that, through the router diagnostics, i can ping the iPad and the router seems to be able to talk to it and get replies -- so, from my limited understanding, i would conclude that the router/iPad wireless connection is OK.
using the same diagnostics, i also pinged the UPnP server (UnitiServeSSD) and the router talks to it OK.
same results pinging the NDS.
From this, i would be tempted to conclude that there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with my network? unless i am missing some subtlety?
anyone else with any suggestions/comments?

Further to above, i also installed a free 'Net Analyzer' app on the iPad. This allows you to see details of what is attached to the network from the iPad's 'view'. Excellent free app!!!
when i invoke it on the iPad, i can "see" the UnitiServe, the NDS, NAS drive, router OK-- and other stuff. this app also has a 'ping' utility and i have been able to ping the UnitiServe from the iPad -- and this shows that it can definitely talk to it, so seems the iPad can 'see' the UnitiServe OK, but for some odd reason, not as a UPnP server???
To me, this demonstrates again there is nowt wrong with the network setup -- and suggests that the problem is elsewhere. given that the old nStream app was able to find the server without any problem in non-UPnP compatibility mode -- am tempted to suggest there is probably an issue with this new software -- perhaps in conjunction with the iOS update as you suspect. However, i am really puzzled why no-one else is reporting this problem??? (in case this is relevant, i have "Use streamer's language" OFF in "Other settings" -- this didnt seem to make ay difference when i turned it ON anyhow)
But let me ask specifically -- anyone out there with a similar setup to mine UnitserveSSD/NDS/iPad iOS8, and able to 'see' the UPnP server (UnitiServe in this case) and play music collection? i can only 'see' my old nStream playlist -- which is totally useless because i cannot play it anyhow --- i get the message "Cant play track" when try... Ad given that i cannot see my music collection to play it in this mode, this means i cannot create new playlists -- totally hopeless situation. i really wish i hadn't upgraded to the new app now...
anyone else out there with any wisdom to bring to bear here??? for info, iRadio seems to work OK.
Sigh...
enjoy

Update:
i fixed the IP addresses of the iPad and NSSRV0429 (the UnitiServe) and rebooted the router - i may have changed other settings in the router -- much too tired to remember now.
Anyway, re-started the iPad and checked the UPnP application and this time i could see NSSRV0429 !!! Turned on the NDS. Then Naim app in non-UPnP compatibility mode -- invoked UPnP -- and this time it didn't hang -- i could open my music library OK.
Nervously, i checked my nStream created playlist -- opened one of them -- and guess what -- this time i could play it! so i can confirm for sure that 4.1/4.2 didn't wipe out my previous nStream playlists, contrary to what i was told when i emailed support.
But just checked again, and the UPnP server is no longer found again, so now its behaving intermittently... The UPnP application now all of a suddent doesnt show the server as one of the UPnP devices...
whatever! :-(
time to get some sleep...
enjoy(?)

Ah... Dunno why but I didn't think to look there. Cheers, I will now go back to regularly clearing it!
it shouldn't need regular clearing. It is only there if the content on your server changes and the naim app doesn't spot the change (some servers do not reliably update their change tracker)
