To be honest I have only just seen your post, so as yet I can't say - but I suspect it will.  I am always changing the content on my server, what with new download purchases and the fact that, although I have ripped all of my CDs quite a few are still in an 'old' directory' outside of my server's domain waiting to be tagged.  So your comment rings true and that was why I needed to clear it regulalrly when using nStream app.

I had a good session last night - Rautavaara Symp #8, some Horneman and finished up with a new version of Mozart's requiem and the problem only occurred once.  But one problem did rear its ugly head (No, I do not mean my reflection in a mirror) that I thought had been cleared and that was seeing the alphabet on the right-hand-side of the screen when choosing from a long list.  Under 4.1 it was there and then disappeared and also under 4.2 it was there and has now disappeared.  I guess it may be linked to not clearing the cache (sounds doubtful I admit) but it's strange the way it was OK at first and then stopped working.  I will try this out after brekkie.  Had a lay-in this morning btw!

Bill,

You should see icons towards the top of the screen which let you choose the layout e.g. list/grid etc. and these include an A-Z option which depending on the view you choose will show the alphabet shortcuts down the RHS of the screen.

Ken - Apologies if I missed it, but can you let us know what make and model of router you are using?

Many have a "UPNP mode" or similar which can be enabled to reduce this kind of issue.  Others (Virgin hubs, the older BT HomeHub boxes) are notoriously flakey with UPNP and many users resolve this by moving these devices to modem only duties and then running their LAN/WLAN from something more robust (eg. Apple Airport Extreme).

Hello TJ.  I find the last two versions of N stream useful in many ways,

but for the life of me, I struggle to find an easy way to add new stations

to my iRadio playlist.  It use to be very apparent and straight forward.

Now, one has to hit every image or symbol to try to find the method.

Maybe I am missing something...

Jim, when you are playing the radio station you want to store as a preset, touch the star (which is empty). It will then change to a solid filled star, and the station will be stored as a preset on the front screen of the App. Hope this helps.

Wot a plonker I am.  I was just messing around with the app to try to make my other problem manifest itself and noticed the 'A-Z' button and hit it.   Imagine my embarrassment, I was hoping nobody had answered my A-Z question and I could retrieve a little self-respect.  Oh no I have been outed.

TJ

I think I am just about sorted now.  I think your point about content changes was spot on, I hadn't made any and I had no problems.  This afternoon I will make some content changes and see what happens.

Cheers

Thanks, Chris.  I did play with the star but it wasn't obvious to me what it did.

I will try your tip this evening.

no worries and thanks for chipping in to try to help. My router is Draytek Vigor 2920N -- i believe i bought this after talking to a Naim rep who reported in favour of it. The router is connected to a virgin hum which is indeed set to modem only mode.

Sorry to spam you all. i haven't solved the underlying problem, but i believe i can describe the problem more accurately now. I have been playing around with fixing the IP address of the iPad and also the U/Serve itself.

I have executed the following steps a few times now with the same result:

(a) switch off NDS, UnitiServe, restart iPad

(b) reboot Draytek Vigor 2920N router

(c) switch on the UnitiServe.

(d) On the iPad, run the UPnP browser

The result of (d) is that the UnitiServe is indeed found.  But unfortunately, its only visible for a few minutes -- after which time it will disappear in the UPnP browser.

Does this sequence give anyone with experience of these things what may be happening here and how to fix it.

As i said before, i am on virginmedia right now, using the hub in modem only mode. i will try to use another network that doesnt require a hub and see what happens. but grateful to hear any thoughts in the meantime.

While not a problem, when you open up an album and it has the cover at the top and all tracks listed below, track number 1 is always slightly greyed out, not as white as the others. Or just me

Not just you Graeme,  its not a bug as such but its something we don't need.

I like the greyed playing now track on the Track Playing screen

1) You could buy a cheap switch from Amazon and link everything together via this rather than your hub.  You could even disconnect your hub from the network once you have connected everything to the switch and then run some tests.  If it does not work with the hub removed then start swapping out cable.  I remember we used to say that 60% of Ethernet problems were caused by cable problems but that was back in the days when we were using COAX cable to connect nodes together and they were rubbish compared to modern Structured Cabling.

2) I do not have a UnitiServe so don't really know the beast but do you know if it can be connected directly to your streamer using what we call a "crossover cable"?  I think it might and I think that might be the way NAIM thought that many people would use it - not everyone wants a home network, although many have one and don't know it.  So you should be able to easily get a cable.

I would try (1) first because it is recommended to use a switch in the way I suggest as a matter of course. ps if you are already doing this then please accept my apologies, it's just that you don't mention a switch.

Good Luck mate!

I know all this is a pain!

@ ChrisSU, Empty as in you could select the PL but there were no tracks? Could you send me one of the misbehaving playlists (connect iPad to iTunes to copy ,nmpl PL files out)

thanks for your help. i am also quite lost about what's going on here.

in relation to " ... Something on your network is blocking the discovery messages from getting to the iPad.".

I can report that, through the router diagnostics, i can ping the iPad  and the router seems to be able to talk to it and get replies -- so, from my limited understanding, i would conclude that the router/iPad wireless connection is OK.

using the same diagnostics, i also pinged the UPnP server (UnitiServeSSD) and the router talks to it OK.

same results pinging the NDS.

From this, i would be tempted to conclude that there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with my network? unless i am missing some subtlety?

anyone else with any suggestions/comments?

Ken, alas pinging does not confirm a correctly working network, it just confirms a special type of diagnostic data packet can pass between two IP addresses.

Discovery techniques use standard network methods called multicast packets and layer 2 discovery protocols. Until recently these were quite uncommon in home networks and so many cheap / consumer devices don't appear to  support these network techniques properly. You just don't need them for Facebook!!

Usually by connecting your media devices / NASs off a quality network switch using regular ethernet patch leads and using a multi media capable wifi access point such as an Apple Airport Express plugged also into your switch should alleviate most of these issues.

My art is very clear,  except with Compatibility Mode on

Is that your problem ??

Posted on: 15 November 2014 by LCV

I am using twonky on a qnap Nas with no compatibility mode and I can't even read the title of the album I am listening to (In the cover picture)

never had this problem and still don't have this problem on the old app.

the strange thing is that in the first days of the new app I did not have this problem but nothing has changed in my set up!

Maybe its worth deleting the app and reinstalling it. I can't find any settings in the app that may be restricting the image quality. Very odd.

Tap and hold your finger down on the icon until it starts to oscillate with a small 'x' in the corner.  Press the 'x' and the app is gone.

My primary upnp server is Minim on a QNAP412 but I also run Twonky on it and it runs OK.

A humorous aside:  I was in a HiFi dealer a while back and he informed me that if my files were sitting on a QNAP they would sound inferior to ones sitting on a NAIM server.  I pushed him on this and he went on to say that even if I copied the files from the QNAP to the NAIM they would still sound inferior.

I bought my UnitiLite somewhere else.

@ken c

You sound as if you are cracking up mate.  Make the problem simpler!    When you say you set your Virgin box to modem mode what do you mean exactly?  If you simply turned WiFi off then that is not really converting it to a modem.  Take all the extraneous kit off your network and make your streaming system a network by itself NO Internet or WiFi), you can then add things back later and hopefully isolate the problem.  Remember: Divide And Conquer!

I just deleted the APP and reinstalled but nothing has changed!
