Adjusting Volume on NAC 202 via N-Stream

Posted by: wbjnetwork on 13 November 2014

Hi All

First posting on the Naim Forum.

Have tried on several occasions to control the volume of my NAC 202 via N-Stream and failed.

My setup is:-

NDX powered by XPS2 DR

NAC 202 / NAP 200 with Hicap 2 DR + Napsc

CD 5 + Flatcap 2

Stream from a Synology DS212j

Currently use Av button on NAC 202 to connect to my NDX & CD button to CD player.

NDX Firmware 3.22

N-Stream latest 4.2

Ipad 3

Everything works fine apart from the Volume Control. I think I need a step by step guide even from resetting the NDX back to Factory Settings.

I have a mono cable connection 3.5mm to 3.5mm phono

Hope you can help.

Regards

Will

Does the NAC 202 has a remote in facility, which would be required for remote control of volume from your NDX/N-Stream?

A 3.5mm to RCA phono lead (mono at both ends) is required.

You need to connect the 3.5mm lead to the remote out on your NDX and the phono end to the RC in on  the 202 then go to the settings menu on your NDX and select System Automation once there select preamp and then enable.

You should also be able to find the info on setting up System Automation in your NDX manual.

I find that the system automation volume has an effect on sound quality and prefer using a remote.

Others have found similar - but it may be peculiarities of certain systems rather than a general rule.

Sorry, should have been clearer,  "remote-in"  =  RC5.  Just looked on the Naim website and the NAC200 does have this.  So you should (!) be able to control it from the NDX with the right remote cable.  Others above appear to concur with this.  If your NAC200 isn't responding to the volume control from the app, maybe the settings are incorrect?

Is it a slightly older NAC 202?

Mine is a 2009 (I think) and needed some kind of small upgrade in the remote control circuit to up the power. Subsequently I was able to control volume using N-stream whereas before...not so much.

There is some info about this on the forum somewhere - that's how I found out, but I can't remember where.

Your dealer should be able to organise that for you if you have already tried enabling automation on NDX, NAC-202 and connecting the requisite cables as above.
