Can't stream UPnP superUniti

Posted by: janc333 on 17 November 2014

I'll probably get all the terminology wrong but since the new Naim App appeared unprompted on my iPad Air I've had continuous problems with my SuperUniti.  Most recently it will not stream my UPnP (Naim server), just get the little circle turning endlessly.  I tried all the tricks of switching things on and off but now change.  There is no question that the although the app made the streaming prettier it was certainly more clunky for the SuperUniti - as the whole thing seems to be geared for the MUSO.  Do I need to trade down To be able to play any music?

Does it stream OK if you use the remote control or the front panel controls?

If so then there's nothing wrong with the streaming, but there may be a problem with the app connectivity or your network.

Is your firmware up to date? Check the SU is running version 3.22.

Naim's TJ is interested in UPnP discovery issues & will probably pick up on this thread,  but I've linked it over to him anyhow.

Unfortunately mine has just started to do this too. Killing and restarting the app seems to cure it when it happens, which seems to be when I go from playing wav to playing flac, it's puzzling!

I still have same problem with my unit illite.  If I use analogue input I cannot get upp to work.  Continuous circle going round.  Seems to work in compatabiliyty mode but then I lose a lot of functionality and playlists.  Hoping for fix soon.

A couple of things to check.

- First as ChrisSU said are you running the latest firmware. This shouldn't effect the specific issue you are seeing but definitely worth getting up to date.

- Secondly when you are having this problem can you see your Naim server with a 3rd party UPnP app? such as 8player (https://itunes.apple.com/gb/ap...ite/id383221354?mt=8) or MediaPlay(https://itunes.apple.com/gb/ap...lay/id573331993?mt=8)

I have just updated apple IOS to 8.1.1. App works better but still occasionally drops out on upnp server and still doesn't like switching from analogue 1 to upnp.  I am using 3.22 but understand a new firmware update is on its way.  I lost my playlists, again, on updating Apple IOS.  Just want it to work please!!

Hi EKP,  please explain how you have your system connected

I see on another post you have a Synology NAS,  but what connects that to your Unitilite

Are you using the Synology Media Serve or something else

Do you have the Uniti & the NAS set for DHCP

HI Mike,

I am at work at the moment and will check on how my system is set up this evening, but it is wired to my Unitilite and works through a switch to my BT wireless hub.  It was all set up by my Naim retailer who also work with computer systems so I presume it has been set up properly.  It worked find previously for about 18 months.  I will check the DCHP tonight.  The old N stream worked fine and this does work but keeps dropping out when using UPNP.  It all works fine in Compatibility mode but as I have said  I lose a lot of functionality.  I have only really had problems since the Apple update and the new NAIM app was introduced.  Thanks  Keith.

Thank you for your help.  I have checked my system now and DHCP is enabled unitilite is connected to Synology NAS via a D link switch which is connected to my BT hub.

With an all wired NAS – Switch – Uniti & a wired branch off the switch to the BT HH it should be ready to work & with DHCP set it should work. So as it doesn't we need to go thru it all from the top.

You have confirmed that the Uniti & NAS are set for DHCP,  now please confirm (in the advanced settings) in the BT HH the Uniti & Synology both have their “IP address assignment:” as DHCP.

Then switch everything off, starting with the Uniti, NAS & Switch, finally the BT HH

Leave that off for 5 minutes, then start the BT only wait while it completes its power up & then press the restart button & again let it complete its sequence.  Then turn on the Switch & then the Synology,  let that complete its start sequence,  then start the Uniti - that should get you a connection.

But if not - the fact that you do have a connection (& the thing puzzling me)  that works OK with UPnP Compatibility Mode on but not off might indicate something with the Synology.

What UPnP media server are you using - ? – I assume the Synology packaged “Media Server”  (?)

You need to check the Synology UPnP Media Server is open & set up OK

Open Synology “View Device Webpage”

Have you got the latest DSM 5.1-5004, if not hit the install button

Open Package Center & make sure Media Server is “Running”

Open Main Menu - 4 squares on the header top left

Open Media Server

General Settings

-          DMA Languge (Your Choice)

-          DMA Style (Simple or Advanced)

-          SSDP Advertisement Interval – suggest to change this to something less than 960 – I have mine on 60

Browsing Settings

-          Music Display Format – Track Title/Artist Album

-          None of  the boxes checked (ticked)

DMA Compatability

-          Check transcode & the different codecs as you want,  otherwise leave everything else unchecked

If you change anything don’t forget to touch the “Apply” button

That’s it,  it should work,  mine is virtually the same & runs faultlessly

If I remember correctly from the previous threads on these sorts of problems, with Compatibility mode selected the Naim app is acting as a remote control for the UnitiLite, and the UL is then issuing commands to the NAS.

With Compatibility Mode off, the Naim app is acting as the control point for the uPnP server on the NAS directly.  And because the app on your iOS device is sending thoe messages over the WAN, there is then the dependency on multicast and certain other parameters (which I don't understand) being handled correctly by the wireless access point and router (ie your BT HomeHub).

I've not had these problems myself; just trying to summarise what others seem to have found.  It would appear that the combination of iOS8 and the new Naim app creates problems people were not finding in the old world.

You've summarized it pretty well nudger

My tombe gets to basics from the start to top & should sort out the various possibilities, including multicast.

Have tried everything that Mike suggested.  App worked fine for an hour then I switched to analogue 1 to watch TV.  on trying to switch back exactly the same problem, UPNP not working just a continuous circle.

After switching to UPNP with remote control on Unitilite the App started working again but then played up again when I tried to go to DAB and FM although it did work after about 20 seconds.  Looks like I will just have to live with it in compatability mode as that seems to work most of the time, though not always.

Thank you for your help and advice Mike, I did update my Synology and thought that that had solved the problem but new the acid test would be when I switched to analogue for the TV.

OK,  this seems it might be a UPnP discovery problem & its something Naim's TJ is very interested in solving.

Can you please try his suggestion (a few posts back) to use a 3rd party UPnP like 8player, its a free Apple app,  & will enable you to check if it can discover & hold a UPnP connection when the Naim combo of Uniti & the app will not.

(I have linked TJ to this post/thread)

Thank you for your help with this.  I will try the 8player tonight and see if it works.  I may also try the app on my Wife's android tablet to see if that works.  I will update when I have tried this out.

Try on the android,  but don't forget that is a different app & will not be a like for like comparison.

If it is a UPnP "discovery" issue,  I know there are solutions coming down the pipe so it shouldn't be too long before you have a fix.

Posted on: 21 November 2014 by EKP

OK I have loaded 8player and it saw my Synology straight away and played music on the iPad.  Didn't sound too bad.  Have gone back to naim app in compatabiliyty mode and no probs so far.  Will have a better idea when I change to watch the news at 6.

Posted on: 21 November 2014 by Mike-B

OK good that 8player  see's the NAS & means the UPnP discovery function is working with 8player

The test is for the Naim app to do exactly the same & hold its UPnP discovery function with Compatibility Mode "OFF"

@ekp mail me if you are willing to try a beta version of the iOS app that might resolve this. I need your Apple ID (ie the one you use to log into the App Store). Tom.johnson@naimaudio.com
