Updating 172XS software or going back to playing a record or CD

Posted by: maze on 19 November 2014

In my utter frustration of attempting to update the software on my 172XS I am seriously considering buying a new CD player, at the moment I am playing some records, light relief.

Can anyone help? I  download the update from Naim and installed the driver for the usb cable as required.

Everything is connected as described in the blurb,  router to 172, router to PC, USB from 172 to PC, PC mains powered. At connection check, one is asked to select which serial port to use, none showing so why not?

I called Paul Stephenson yesterday to help, sorry I missed his return call so did not get to complete or discover what is going on.

Anyone else come across this situation? I his have attempted several times to sort this out. I am determined not to be beaten, however a new CD player is very tempting right now.

Surely there has to be an easier way to update any product today than cables an PC's and untis all over the place.

Is it just Naim that this seems to happen with as I don't seem to come across this with other devices that require updates?

I got rid of my unitiserve due to update issues, I can see the 172 going the same way very soon.

Since losing the userve my nas has worked flawlessly unlike the two naims in question, so are Naim lacking here and behind the curve with software/hardware.

I might add I have a Denon unit as a kitchen system, no issues.

Help!

You have not loaded the right drivers. It does seem a bit of a faff, but once you've done it a couple of times it becomes easy. It would be great if it would just update at the click of a button like an iPhone does though.

Halibut, how do you know I haven't loaded the correct drivers? Do you have a link to the correct drivers?

I agree it does seem to be a driver issue.

It's becuase you cannot select a port. If you have the mini B on the back, you should see COM 3 in the drop down - that's what I see anyway. the accompanying PDF for the update tells you where to find it. This is the only tricky bit.

I've updated twice in the past few days and it's easy peasy - once you have those pesky drivers.

Yes the PDFs tells where to download the driver, which I have downloaded to my PC, set up wizard confirms set up etc and device ready to be used. So what is the point of Naim providing a link that offers a download that is not the correct driver, I'm confused here, sorry.

HH is right, the driver is not loaded. I tried the supplied drivers from the link when I first plucked up the courage to update SU and UQ2. No luck with my old battered PC. I had to fish out info on the PC motherboard from the net then find a reputable site offering the driver for free (not as simple as it sounds!)

It is impossible for Naim to have the answer to all our problems (PC related or otherwise) Until I needed to update my Naim kit my ignorance was bliss. Now as I have installed the driver, at the last update I upgraded 3 Uniti products in about 40 mins. After the first sucess you will be as blase as me and HH, I guarantee it, good luck.

Looking in device manager there are no com ports showing, therefore I assume drivers are not installed.

I feel your pain! Send a mail to Phil Harris at Naim (use info@naimaudio.com) and ask for a link to the drivers that works. Get that bit and it will be easy. It really will.

Thanks will do.

It's no comfort but no, Naim are not alone in customers having these issues with product updating. You will get it sorted though, honestly, so persevere.
