NDX or HDX

Posted by: RoyleBlue on 26 March 2011

Starting to put my 1000 or so cd's on a PC NAS with a view to getting an NDX in a month or so, pennys permitting, but have now been offered an HDX for approx. the same money - any thoughts?

Indeed so. When I'd finished kicking myself I decided to just do it. I got the RAM and sound card FOC but forked out £750 for the SSD conversion. Not cheap. A difference in SQ (the last Naim magazine implies this) but caused by what? Sound card? SSD drive? The pitch was queered in my case because the HDX was out of my possession for about two months and had barely warmed back up on the rack when the 252/300 came through the door. We always advise against doing too many things at once for fear of confusion or throwing the baby out with the bath water - or something like that. Sometimes things just don't work out that way. Even within the rules of the law of diminishing returns I think it's a considerable commitment for a subtle improvement. But it was an improvement and I am content. There just wasn't much time to savor and appreciate it before the next upgrade. Poor me!

I'm getting the PCI/RAM upgrade for my NS01 tomorrow, so I may be able to comment in a few days.

Thought about the SSD - but not convinced its the best use of £600, the price I was advised for the change.

Also, I quiet like having some VERY local music, in case something breaks and I can't be bothered to climb up into the loft!

I will be interested to hear your findings. I'm thinking in terms of better flow and detail, but by no means a huge change. Let's see what your's gives.
