Holidaying in Kenya

Posted by: backfromoz on 26 March 2011

Dear All, read in the paper today how Kenya is the new dragon country of Africa. Economy improving Govt not the corrupt shambles of years ago. Rule of law improving etc etc.

So is it worth a punt for a holiday.

This is important as i was born in kenya but left whan i was 2 years of age. We lived in Nairobi Mombasa and Dar Es Salam 1956-1960. So i have no memory of it.

I love South Africa.

So is it worth it ?  Is it as safe as the as the article suggested??

Thanks David

Kenya is a great place for both beach & inland

Safari is outstanding, Masai-Mara is the flagship,  but I prefer the more remote places like Samburu

If you go Masai-Mara,  please go by road,  so much to see that gets missed with fly-in. Better still take a long slow route around Aberdares, Mt Kenya area & Navasha

Amboseli is excellent in Jan/Feb which is about the only time for bluesky views of Kilimanjaro

Don't forget Tanzania,  better Safari & far far less crowded than Kenya

Hi David -

I'm an American, but have been married to a South African for 31 years.   We've been lucky enough to be able to visit often, and will be spending most of this May there.  It is true what they say about Africa getting in your blood!

Coincidentally, my neighbor is an American married to a Kenyan woman -- a real sweetheart.  Unfortunately, after witnessing so many years of poverty, crime and corruption, she speaks only about helping as many family members as possible emigrate.   But I'm sure if you spend as little time as possible in Nairobi, you'll have a wonderful time.

Not to distract you from your goal, but have you ever been to the Seychelles?   Such beautiful islands, and once you're in Kenya, it is a relatively short flight away!

Good luck with your holiday -- I hope it works out great for you!

Hook
