Could n-Stream be put on the Apple Store again please
Posted by: JSH on 22 November 2014
N-Stream has been taken down and replaced by Naim. Fine, but Naim requires iOS 7 and won't work with older devices (and is hopeless with Android).
Apple made a big fuss last year about its Store offering the most recent compatible download for older devices and this worked until a few days ago for n-Stream.
Naim appears now to have removed it, for reasons I cannot fathom. Could it be re-instated please, after all it costs nothing to have it there and I, for one, to do not want to waste my money on yet more Apple devices to keep that cult in the splendour to which it thinks it is entitled

How much of this is caused by janky UPnP server or network issues, as opposed to the new Naim app? I'm running it on a newish iPad Air, on a wired network (older AirPort Extreme router / dual-band Wi-Fi access point) with an older NaimUniti (analogue iPod, 3.17 s/w) and am having no problems whatsoever....
Looking at older posts by some on this thread, it appears that many have had problems in the past with their streaming setups, long before the arrival of the new app; how much of the problem is pilot error?
Have you made use of your retailer's best advice (which <rant start> might require replacing some of your old, creaky network and storage hardware with something that doesn't require a lever to configure <rant stop> )?
I have contacted naim support and my excellent dealer; the only solution that works for me on iOS is too hard reset the device each time I want to use the app. The Android version just doesn't find the NDS or Unitiqute without a lot of trouble and when it does the volume control only works with the Unitiqute. I have tried both NDS and Unitiqute on fixed IP as well as DNS but neither is more successful thant the other. My network is driven by a Draytek Vigor 2830 gigabit modem router with 4 switches and 4 WAPs. All naim devices are hard wired and the network easily handles my legacy squeezebox system (5 squeezebox touch, 3 squeezebox radios and a squeezebox duo as well as photos and videos streamed from my NAS and home server to my smart TVs so I don't think it is the network. n-Stream did work well for me.
Hi Bonner,
I'm not sure what email address and name you go under 'in the real world' but I don't remember seeing anything in either my inbox or the sales inbox from you.
I know that the Draytek routers had issues with Bonjour discovery support - I was sent a Beta version of code some time ago that resolved my autodiscovery issues on my Draytek 2920n so my first port of call would be to give them a shout and see if there's a firmware update for your router.
If not then *PLEASE* drop an email to support@naimaudio.com or to me directly at phil.harris@naimaudio.com ...
Thanks
Phil
[Edited to add : I *THINK* I've found your original communication with me - I believe your last email on Sunday 9th November said to me that resetting your iOS device resolved the issue but that you were still having problems with Android - I replied on the 10th saying that we were looking to release an updated Android app shortly and asking if you had set up system automation on your NDS and did it work with your iOS device or did it not work at all? ]
Thanks Phil, I have emailed you, I will see if I can get any joy from Draytek.
@Bonner: are you sure that the discovery problems you're having isn't exacerbated by the advertisements of Squeeze services on the network?
Thanks I will try turning it off to see if that helps., although this is not a permanent solution as we like to use BBC iPlayer a lot and thiis is not available on naim.
If you search for "SqueezeCenter" and "Bonjour" on the interwebs, you'll find that this has been a sore spot in the past (at one point, Logitech temporarily removed Bonjour support due to issues with flooded network traffic)....
@David Deyler
Useful advice. Thank you

It's never Naim is it? It's always our router, wiring, upnp etc etc. We should go and rant etc. No we should not. At the price Naim charges and the position in the market they have sought, these should be designed robustly enough for ordinary use by ordinary customers. If not Carey Street awaits
I see Naim are going decidedly down-market in their dealer network these days. My local John Lewis sells Naim now. Their "partners" on the floor in question couldn't even advise my wife accurately on a Kindle Fire, so God help anyone who thinks of buying a Mu-so from them!
Hi JSH,
I understand your frustration however what we see 'from the air' generally is issues with networks where kit doesn't perform as it should ... routers that don't handle IGMP and network broadcasts correctly, where bridging protocols between wireless and wired networks isn't correctly implemented, where the (software implemented) switches in routers curl up their toes and effectively do a reset when asked to handle what isn't even that much traffic, where Ethernet over Mains devices cause issues with unsupported protocols or poor throughput.
I know that it might sound like a cop out by us but it isn't - if you built a house but skimped on the foundations (or were given a badly laid set of foundations) then you know that you're going to be in trouble later on and this is the same. A big chunk of my time is spent diagnosing issues that turn out to be underlying network related - wireless networks in particular are so badly understood that I'm quite often amazed that things work as well as they do.
We're happy to work through issues that people are having - but as always we *REALLY* would ask anyone with issues to contact us directly, the email addresses are in stickies at the top of every forum, as trying to pick up problems and issues from forum threads is almost impossible to handle and manage...

Thanks Phil. Point accepted; these things are complex. I will follow David's advice first and then contact you as needs be.
FWIW, I run a fast and complex Mercedes. I have no idea how it works. I just want to get in and enjoy it. I feel the same about with my Naim. I just want to sit and enjoy the music. I expect it to be built sufficiently robustly like the Merc to handle what is thrown at it. Sometimes I feel the Naim is great on the motorway, but not so good with Cornish lanes! But too much metaphor from me

Phil,
I'm not sure your analogy works. After all, it was Naim that decided to build and sell the house on the badly laid foundations; foundations they knew were troublesome from the outset. Besides, the way I see it, the homeowners are merely complaining that the heating, the water, the windows and the doors don't work. The brickwork may be solid, but it's hardly a home when you're having to sleep in the shed.
By the way, I say this as a happy owner of a NaimUniti for many years. Although, I must admit, I've chosen not to upgrade to the new app, and will refrain from doing so until absolutely necessary.
Regards
J.
Hmmm ... not really JR...
If you have a reliable and properly functioning network then the kit on top of it is solid ... if the network isn't stable then the kit can't guarantee to be solid. It really does get that simple.
I've had four separate customer issues that have been put to bed today and were solely down to the underlying network infrastructure being flaky.

Hi TJ
I have a qute 1 and also the latest Apple products so updating the app means its useless. I also ask that the original N-Stream is made available again as an option.
Please, please please!
Anyone else want this?
Thanks
Jason
I have a qute 1 and iphone 6 running latest naim software. Works a treat.
The app can be used with all of our streamers including the Qute1 and Uniti1 ...

To call me a Trade Member would be a loose description, as I have no commercial or vested interest in defense of Focal / Naim, its products or offerings. I used to train U.S Naim retailers in the not-so-distant past, and I have as well a bit of experience in designing networked audio hardware for other manufacturers in the recent past (as well as other networked stuff on a much larger scale), so my perspective on this is a little different.
That said - yes, nine times out of ten, there is something in a network configuration that causes these issues, and it's not always the audio hardware. It is impossible to test every possible configuration of tablet/phone, router/access point, media server (hardware & software) and streamer, though it is possible to eliminate potential variables from the equation.
The easiest way to do this is to start with an isolated network (three devices: router/access point, tablet/phone for control, streaming player) with no media server or other devices, and no internet access; all items should be set to their defaults. If there is a problem with discovery of devices (one control point, one streaming device) in this environment, one can isolate this before adding outbound internet access, or a media server. Add in one device at a time until the system starts to exhibit unstable behavior.
Note that this advice is manufacturer-independent, as well as protocol-independent, and is a good place to start with almost any wireless media streaming troubleshooting.
If your "nine out of ten" times is correct there should be a long list of people who had big issues with the first N-Stream app. I had no such issues and the issues I have with the new app - it freezes and the iPad becomes unresponsive for up to 10 seconds before I can kill the app and restart it - are unique to this new app for me. (all versions since N-Stream)
Basically, I'll be listening to Radio Paradise for example, hear a song I like and wake the iPad to see who the band/artist is and often all I get is a frozen app that will not respond. Double tapping the little home button does nothing. I can't even power the iPad off while the app is frozen. It affects everything. About ten seconds later the double taps seem to go through and the app minimises and I can swipe it away. (opening it again without restarting it and it's still frozen).
The old N-Stream worked flawlessly for me but I'm finding myself getting a bit infuriated listening to music which is hardly the idea. Now I'm as likely to get up off the couch, go to the PC, open Firefox and browse to Radio Paradises web site. It's probably quicker, certainly more reliable and definitely less aggravating.
Thats no excuse for this forum software however which is nearly impossible to use on a ohone of any kind.
For me ios8 is Apple's equivalent of Microsoft's Vista!
i also had lots of problems when i upgraded to the new Naim app, but its important to note that i also upgraded iPad to iOS 8.x.x at the same time as well as bringing NDS firmware to 3.22. From numerous exchanges here -- the hint was that iOS upgrade probably had a significant part in these issues -- since as a few people have experienced, I didnt experience any network problems with nStream AND the old iOS.
In the end, i bought this Airport express thingy and it seems to have laid the problems to rest. Not sure exactly why this was needed in this new upgraded setup when it wasnt needed before, but hey, i dont really care -- provided i can play my music. The new Naim app interface takes a bit of getting used to and there are quite a few features that i miss from nStream, especially in relation to management of playlists. Right now, i am toying with the idea of creating and managing playlists via Naim's DTC. This creates playlists on the UnitiserveSSD (as far as i know) so the size of playlist will be limited by storage available there, i assume.

Hi Ken,
There are no playlist related features that have been removed in the new Naim app that were present in n-Stream. I'm sure if you are trying to do something specific then someone here could help you out.
Ken I prefer to create my playlists via my hdx ssd, you can also do this via the nserve app

unless i am just dreaming, there was a feature n the old nStream that allowed me ti edit a playlist. As i recall, when you invoked this function, you could them mark the tracks in the playlist that you wanted to delete -- and then you could delete them all at once in one single operation. now, it seems i have to delete one by one. the reason why this feature has become important is that i have found when you touch a track in a playlist, it then adds a whole bunch of other tracks -- and its a right pain to then remove them one by one. i have seen this issue reported here several times, i believe.

Hi Ken,
You can still edit playlists in the new Naim app. Find the playlist you want to edit on the home screen then tap it to view the track list. Long press any track to drag it up and down to re-order the playlist. Delete individual tracks by tapping the "..." options button next to the track name. The previous version of n-Stream did not allow multiple selection of tracks for deletion either but it is not a wholly unreasonable request, I have added it to our feature request tracker!
RE "I have found when you touch a track in a playlist, it then adds a whole bunch of other tracks"
I'm not sure what is happening here. I spoke to one other user who reported similar but it turned out he was using the options button in the top right hand corner of the list view rather than the options button next to the track name. This adds all the tracks in the current list, could this be what is happening? If not and you think there is a bug then we can work through it together to get some clear reproducible steps and we will fix it
Tom
Tom here is the behavior I see on my iPhone.
If I have an album selected and tap-touch the title of Track 3 (not the . . . Options Buttons but the track title itself), the app adds ALL tracks of the album to the play cue, but starts playing from Track 3. So where the particular Track 3 I've tap-touched is 3 of 9, I see a message "9 tracks were added" which at first seems a bit odd. If I've touched Track 3, why were '9 tracks added?' I ask myself. The playback behavior is fine; if I tap touch the name of Track 3, it plays 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and then 9 in sequence. I just also happened to add the entire track list to the cue, but only starts at 3. So this is the "whole bunch of other tracks" issue.
Now if I use the Options button next to the track name, I can add JUST that track to the current cue.
AND, if I TAP AND HOLD the title of Track 3 (vs doing a tap-touch), I get some options to pop up. One is "Play Now." This version of Play Now adds ONLY Track 3 to the cue. This is what most people probably intend when they touch a single track -- to play just that track. (This is a guess as to what most people intend.)
So if you tap-touch a track in the middle of the album, it adds the entire album to a cue but starts playing from just that track and then proceeds to play through to the end of the album. (This is the old 'Play From Here' function of nStream.) If you want to play just a single track, or add just a single track to a cue, you must use either the . . . Options Buttons next to the track name, or tap and hold the track name.
I think that not all users have fully grasped that the . . . 'Options Buttons' next to track names perform functions at the single-track level, while those up top next to the album name perform functions at the album level, and those up top of the current cue list perform functions for that list. It's logical, and I think it's a nice improvement on nStream once one sees the logic. All may not have grasped the difference in the tap-touch vs. tap-and-hold either. This is not so intuitively logical to me, but works fine once one knows the code so to speak. I certainly like the options to play either a single track OR 'play from here,' which the app provides.
You can send me a message, i have a n-stream copy on my desktop

It turns out that the UPnP/DLNA plugin for Squeezecenter was causing the problem with the new naim app (it did not affect n-stream). As my Squeezeboxes will work fine without this plugin I have disabled it in Squeezecenter and the naim app (iOS version)can now find and control the NDX and Unitiqute OK. Thanks for the tip which got me on the right trail.
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am in the same situation as the OP.
I just brought an older iPod touch back online to use as a remote for my Qute. The problem is the max version I can load is iOS v6.
How can I get the Naim App loaded?
