Favourite Smiths lyric - and why.....

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 25 November 2014

I'm sure there are many fans of the best band ever, who would like to contribute their favourite lyrics. Mine is a section from How Soon Is Now:

There's a club if you'd like to go

You might meet somebody who really loves you

So you go, and you stand on your own

And you leave on your own

And you go home

And you cry

And you want to die

It sums up perfectly a time in my life when I was always hoping to meet that somebody. And the person who I thought was that somebody never was. It all worked out wonderfully in the end, but I still love those lines.

What are yours?

When you have 5 seconds to spare I will tell you the story of my life

As Anthony said to Cleopatra
As he opened a crate of ale :

Oh, I say :
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girls are bigger than others
Some girl's mothers are bigger than
Other girl's mothers

The imaginative humour of the great lovers opening a 'crate of ale' in an idle moment. The juxtaposition with the completely unrelated observation that 'some girls are bigger than others', and as if that wasn't enough, 'some girls' mothers are bigger than other girls' mothers' .

It all rings very true for me.

Deep respect. Have just looked at the sleeve again, and have always liked it.

The words 'favourite' and 'the Smiths' do not belong together,  most miserable overrated group of all time in my view and it doesn't help that one of my best mates loves them and keeps trying to convince me I'm wrong.  If I had to choose one it would be that lovely uplifting track that talks about girlfriend in a coma which is pretty much how I feel when listening to the Smiths!

Every time someone posts a new snippet (not many so far, I know) I end up singing it for the rest of the day. Sad, I know.

I've too much caffeine in my blood stream and a lack of real spice in my life ........

The why, don't know really, but I often find this lyric going round in my head, so my psychotherapist is probably the best person to ask.

But I haven't got a stitch to wear...'

I just love the Smiths. I went through a period of several years in the early nineties when I listened to nothing else. These lyrics just want me to go and listen all again.

HH, others, where should I start with The Smiths? Regrettably I don't know their music.  I'm not too old to learn.

Bart. The Smiths made so few albums I would just buy them all. They really are all terrific. If I had to name a favourite, at the momemt it is probably their early albums, The Smiths and Meat is Murder.

The only decent album ever released by them.  My problem is not their  music per se but the persona encapsulated by their lead singer.  Lots of bands are influenced  by their music but not sure by their  lyrics though! Long live Mr. Marr!

What you need is the Smiths Complete box set of remastered albums. All the studio albums, the live one 'Rank' and the essential compilations of B sides and radio sessions. 8 CDs in all and not one duff track, apart from (maybe) Golden Lights. I first saw them in autumn '83 when they played Leicester Poly. On the third encore they'd run out of songs, so played This Charming Man again.

These really are songs that saved your life. Total genius.

Not so! The Queen is Dead and Strangeways are better in my view. The first album, and its alternative Troy Tate version are also superb, as is Hatful of Hollow.

I'll take your word for it, Nigel. I did see them back in 86 at the Brixton academy. Great night but I stand by my view that the vocalist is a total tosser!

Happy listening!

Bart,

There's a really good compilation album called 'Louder Than Bombs' which is perhaps shorter and cheaper than buying everything straight off - HH is right that all the albums are great tho!

HDTracks has "The Smiths Complete" -- sounds like a good place to start.

Posted on: 29 November 2014 by hungryhalibut

I've just looked that up. It only has 40 tracks, so is far from complete. It's the box set of 2011 remasters that you want, which contains 8 albums in replica sleeves, with great sound quality. If you want just one album, start with The Queen is Dead, which is widely acknowledged by Smiths fans as their best. Rank, a recording of one of their very last concerts, will give you an idea of the live experience, albeit without the stage invasions.
