Friday Fun Chaps

Posted by: The Strat (Fender) on 28 November 2014

guys,

I was chatting to my dad last night (84 and still well on the case) and once again he was reiterating his long held view that I should trade the Naim for some valves (not going to happen).   But we did start to discuss the cost of running various bits of kit.

Had me thinking.  Assuming left switched on 24/7 and 25 hours use per week what's the difference in energy consumption between a Nait 5is, 282/HCDR/250, 552/500 and Statement?

You may use slide rules, log tables, dividers.

Hi Strat.

If you take a look out of the window, does it look like the 1st of April to you ?  ATB Peter

More importantly, how long would George have to pedal his Carlton at full tilt in order to power 'statement' for the duration of an average symphony?

Some questions are better left unanswered.

If I'm going to submit a business case for the Statement this data will be required

Apparently, you have to notify your local Power Station and the National Grid before purchasing the Statement if you are located in the UK.

Not sure about local laws elsewhere.

I know the weather's not very nice but perhaps you should try to get out a little more

The energy used by your Naim gear is all dissipated, ultimately, as heat. My oil fired heating is not cheap to run either, so the cost of keeping the black boxes running 24/7 is offset by reduced oil bills. If anyone wants to calculate the cost benefit of this vs turning the Naim gear off when not in use, be my guest...

That's odd, mine makes sound as well

Slightly more seriously (only slightly) guys are the bigger amps a lot more power hungry?

Strat,

Can't you take your pleasures in private?

I had great friday fun yesterday; well it was Black Friday & having an eye for a bargain,  I bought a few LED's at a special 15%  BF discount plus 10% for bulk orders.

So now with my whole house fully LED'd with just a few CFL's,  I can sleep easy knowing that now I can run my Naim's 24/7 at no extra KW with the energy savings ........

..........  & the nice part with the black friday sales,  I did not get out of my armchair once.

Mike,

I thought i had seen previous posts on the Forum about LED lights creating "dirty" mains that might affect the naim gear.

Hope your change out doesn't diminish the SQ

A nasty rumour Cbr600,   no doubt true with the early and/or cheap lamps,  but they do have some regulations on mains noise to conform to these days.

They can cause a drift in power factor (volts & amps go out of sink) & dimming makes this worse.  But noise is not that much of an issue with the latest generation of lamps.   When I had a 'scope on the mains to check something else,  I took a look at the effects of LED & dimmer in my listening room with its x7 5w (35w) down-lighters.  I could see a small effect on the lighting circuit, & it was inconsequentially small,   but nothing on the power circuits.

Howzit cutting in gods own country these days ??  We are planning a trip to Galway for a reunion in March or April & will be tagging on some extra days around west Cork & Kerry on the way home.
