Starting up with my Unityserve

Posted by: Tommis on 30 November 2014

I recently purchased a second hand Unityserve which unfortunately needed some repair thus I have not been able to start exploring the unit. Now,  before I start doing anything - I think I read somewhere that you should set up metadata structure before starting ripping --- or something of that sort. Is this relevant when using the Unityserve or is this only if you did the process using conventional PC's? Is it as simple as "shove it in and off you go?"

Yes. The metadata is retrieved automatically from on-line databases. You can edit it later, if needed, but generally there is little need to.

Thanks Jan ... I believe you have provided advice previously - much simpler if you move in next door ....

eh ?

Make sure you install the nServe app on your iPad, so you can edit metadata if things go wrong. I suggest you decide what genres you wish to use and edit that as you go. For example, I have loads of ECM records, and set up a genre called ECM so I can keep them all together. You can also use nServe to replace album art if it goes awry, which it will! nServe is your friend.

Just kiddin' Jan - but I am not a natural with these things, that manual which is written in IT lingo freaks me out so wish I had a neighbour who could set the whole thing up ...

Luckily, Tommis, you are taking really the moststraightforward least hassle way into streaming with a Naim system that it is possible to do.

Although there are other ways to rip/ serve your music, the Unitiserve is a great piece of equipment

and easy to use.

There are lots of friendly folks on the forum with Unitiserves who will be happy to give some guidance & tips if you need them.

I can see and remember that you have been dabbling with the Unitiserve for a few months now.

Did you get it working / serving music to a streamer ok already?

Any bits you are still stuck on?

Was going to start ripping today but now the damn thing doesn't work again - just keeps blinking frantically - back to workshop ...

Got it to work again. It rips nicely, but none of the ripped albums show up as stored albums afterwards. I didn't get a command asking "save - yes/no" or anything of that sort after the CD was ejected. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Tommis,

There is no command for you to save yes or no.

Once it has ripped and the disc is ejected, thats it, its committed to the Hard Disk.

Sorry for these questions but just worth asking in case...

You do have the Hard Disk version and not the SSD version dont you?

You have got it wired into your network?

Are you using the nServe app to check? (not nStream)

You can also check using the Desktop Client software, and also via your PC/laptop in Windows Explorer or the Mac equivalent.

It does sometimes take some minutes to register until the library has synchronised.

Yes it is the hard disc version and I have hardwired using an ethernet cable. I also use the iPad app, but had to hook up with keyboard, screen and the whole chabang yesterday to get it going so controlled in parallel - mostly through keyboard and screen. I did wait quite a few minutes but still did not show up. Will check again tonight - perhaps the unit had to sleep on it before deciding to accept my unworthy CD?

If you are looking in nServe, your latest rip will appear about a minute after the disc is spat out. Press 'recents' and then 'newest' and it will be there. It won't be there immediately, but you will see 'synchronising library' pop up and then the album appears. If it doesn't do this it's not working properly.

Thanks - do I need to wait till it turns up on the list before I start ripping the next or can I go staight on to the next one once the first is ejected?

You can just keep ripping . . . no need to wait.

Posted on: 02 December 2014 by ChrisH

Did you find your ripped CD in nServe?

If you did and you are comfortable that its all working and appearing in nServe, you can just keep feeding the Unitiserve until you get bored, no need to wait.

Get a cup of coffee and some music going, then just feed away!

By the way, what streamer do you have?

Just curious to know what your Unitiserve is serving to.

Don't have a streamer - I send on to a Proceed DAC then onto amp

I hate to admit but the audio quality gets a noticeable boost when you use one of the Naim streamer.

I have set up the ripper to also separately store the albums as mp3 files --- where do I find these afterwards and how do I get them onto my Samsung phone?
Posted on: 06 December 2014 by Jan-Erik Nordoen

Tommis,

From your computer, connect to the UnitiServe, which should be showing up on your network. Once there, you should see two folders, MQ and LQ. The MP3s will be in the LQ folder. From there, drag or copy them to your computer, then to your phone.

Thanks again Jan!

I would like to hook up a NAS to back up my music files - any suggestions for a good product, meaning ease of use, quality, noise ....
Posted on: 19 December 2014 by Tommis
Jan, where do I see those two folders? Can't find this option in either the top line menues or the tabs ....
Posted on: 19 December 2014 by Jan-Erik Nordoen

How are you connecting to the U/S ?

Posted on: 19 December 2014 by Tommis
Yes i have my pc app talking to the naim and i see all albums etc but not the folders you refer to - under which menu are they?
Posted on: 19 December 2014 by garyi
These folders appear on the network.

Goto start then computer then in the left hand pane network. It will scan your network and your naim will appear. Double click to enter.

You can map this deive for easier access.

If your network is set to public then set it to work or hime. To do this click the little network icon the the task bar right, click properties and it should come up with what kind of network it thinks it is

And if you are having issues connecting the pc to the UnitiServe over your home network, be sure to have set the workgroup name of the pc to NAIM.
