Firmware Update

Posted by: Nigel 66 on 06 December 2014

Dear Forum

I've had an ND5XS for a little while, and see that there has been a recent firmware update released. I've never undertaken an update for my player, so I'm pretty sure that it'll be running an older version than this.

I've never really had any performance issues to date, so my question is . . . is it worth updating the software? Will not doing this lead to any drop off in performance?

And is it easy to do, or am I better asking my dealer to do the update, and if so, is there likely to be a charge for this?

I'm not a total technophobe and managed to set up my NAS, network, etc when I bought the ND5XS, and have just skimmed through the update instructions which seem ok.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Nigel

It's best to keep up to date. So take a deep breath, and go for it.

I assume you are talking about your ND5 has f/w that is pre Nov 2013 & have seen there is now 3.22 available??

My advice is to wait - there is newer f/w in the pipeline that will make a noticeable difference.

When it is released 100% go for it

It takes about 5 minutes to hook it up press buttons & 20 minutes waiting while it installs.

Its not difficult, much easier if you have a laptop rather than a PC,  but if you have already set up your network, you can do it.

If the dealer does it they might charge,  but it really does not take a lot of time & if I were the dealer it’s something I consider as an FOC customer service item.

Nigel 66 had me going then!  I thought I'd missed the latest update for my ND5, which as you say Mike, must be due soon. He must surely be referring to the 3.22 update from 6th November 2013. Either that, or I need to go to Specsavers again!

What kind of cable is needed for the upgrade process? Something from a laptop USB port to my Uniti2? Assuming it is not possible through wifi, looking forward to the spotify connect enablement which I suppose means a firmware upgrade.

USB 2.0 Cable - Type A to Mini-B

You probably have one or more around as most camera's come with them. Problem is most of the freebee ones are only about 1m long & for me a bit too short,  so I bought a 3m from www.

3m is good for the Naim,  but even better for camera & handycam work

The instructions show both USB & Ethernet,  so I should have added that I use an ethernet from laptop to switch (or router).  That connection can be done over wireless,  but I prefer something thats robust & that I know will stay connected.
