Seeing server folders on the Naim App
Posted by: John J on 06 December 2014
I've downloaded wav. files and a pdf. file from HDTracks put them in a sub-folder named Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert under a folder named Jazz on my Synology server. The Naim app doesn't see the folder.
I'm assuming my folder setup is wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.
I check & if req retag all my albums with dBpoweramp, some new downloads - especially Qobuz - might be tagged with gendre that I do not want = smooth jazz or funk jazz - or the french typically tag reggae as music du mond,
I do it in Windows Explorer, sweep all the tracks on the album, hit tag edit & edit the genre field to whatever genre of choice -- takes no time except the PC crunching time.
.pdf is not a format for album art that is usable. Delete the .pdf and go online and download a .jpg of the album art, put it in the same folder as the music files for that album, and name it folder.jpg
HDTracks supplies pdf's that are huge, and low quality. I delete them and do as I've written above.
It is not at all clear to me that the .wav files are supplied by HDTracks with tagging that is suitable. I only download .flac from HDTracks, and even then find that many of their .flac files are not tagged properly (in the past, some not tagged at all!). I always check, and usually edit, the tags after downloading to my Mac and before moving them to my server.

+1, there's a great degree of slop on HDtracks as far as cover art and tagging. Still faster than ripping DVD-As or vinyl rips, nonetheless!
I bought 6 albums very recently (all newly released, and all in flac) from HDTracks (Simon & Garfunkel; The Who) and all were tagged OK. Maybe they are getting better. But in the past it's been extremely hit or miss re the tagging that comes along. (Those 6 recent albums sound PHENOMINAL; I'm quite happy with them.)
Hey Garyi, had a hard time from someone??
What you have said is way off beam, .wav files are fine, all my 500+ albums are wav & I do not have troubles with filing or browsing, Naim sees them just fine, just the same as .flac or any other format - & my NAS is also a Synology.
I'll give you the tag problem, but if you are happy with basic tagging its not really that much different from other formats.
Mike the problem is wavs do not like tagging, consequently every company plus dog has had to come up with the methodology for tagging them. That means that yes for one or two applications they will work fine, for everything else they will show up as 'untitled'.
Just try dropping a naim wav rip into anything else, or indeed an itunes ripped wav into anything else.
The situation is possibly improving, but the simple fact of the matter is, and its without a doubt. WAVs are by far the hardest cross platform audio format out there.
Once you go FLAC there is no going back.
OK Gary, I hear ya, & reading others opinions of .wav problems, I guess I am in a minority. But I honestly have never found any difficulty using .wav or straightening out the rare tag issues with them.
As for dropping a wav into other stuff, yes I agree, but my wav files live in the NAS & only get played on the Naim. When I need an album to play on other players, in my family situation its an iPod of one sort or another & I convert to MP3.
So for me, .wav works perfectly OK, & I do have a number of .flac albums & find them no different in application & use than .wav.
