Tidal Launches in Canada

Posted by: Audio Visionary on 08 December 2014

I have signed up this morning for a two month reduced cost trial of TIdal. We will use it in the shop with our streamers and will allow clients to choose audition material from the Tidal service. We hope it will be a benefit to them to hear music they know without using their mp3 files on their phones. Stay tuned for a report after the busy Christmas season. I know that Tidal is not available in all territories yet, we will see if we retain our subscription to the service.

I received the the same offfer today by email.  I'd like to give it a try, but I'm not sure how to hook it up to the NDS in such a way as to optimise SQ.  Any advice?

You'll have to let us know your thoughts, and how it sounds with the Muso.

I was going to pop into the shop last week when I was in Edmonton, but with the snow storm I was more keen on getting back safely, another time...

PS I like your new digital store front too.

Digger,

You will need to use an IOS device hardwired to the NDS USB input. For now this is the only way (without a laptop) to play Tidal on a Naim streamer or DAC.

Does Tidal use flac lossless source files? Is it possible to stream a flac file in this way, as I didn't think these were compatible with iOS?

Yes, the decoding to LPCM occurs within the app (of course, as for AirPlay use, additional encoding to ALAC is required).

You could also use a Raspberry Pi with suitable digital output and software that supports AirPlay (or Shairplay), fed into the NDS' Toslink optical or RCA coaxial input (depending on the audio card used). This eliminates the need to use the front-panel USB (as host) connection into the NDS.

That's odd as I can, via AirPlay, stream FLAC to the MuSo using the Qobuz app on my iPad Which uses iOS8.

Yes, and you can also stream it to older Naim devices via iPad or iPhone and Apple TV. Works reasonably well, given Naims reluctance to integrate CD quality streaming services. Spotify at 320k - better than nothing, but pah!

Yes–Mu-so is currently the only Naim streaming product with AirPlay...

Hi Manu, We tried the Apple cable from our 30 Pin iPad with Tidal app on it into the new Qute b and it did not work. So, we used the Cambridge iDock with 30 pin connector via digital cable into the Qute b and it works great. I did try Bluetooth connection from the iPad to the Qute b - it works but not so great sound - which is to be expected. I hope we see support for Tidal natively on our various Uniti products and streamers soon.
