Superuniti => Supernait 2 / NDX
Posted by: ChrisH on 15 December 2014
I am excited to say that I am going to be making this change in the next months to 6 weeks.
I had a demo at my friendly dealer last week, and spent a very enjoyable few hours listening to a wide selection of tunes on both and comparing them.
I was really impressed with the additional details and musicality I was hearing with the SN2/NDX combination, but I guess it was a bit of an unfair competition in the end.
When I added in the future flexibility and improvement options that this set up would give me, my decision was made.
The Superuniti has been fantastic, but never having been up the Naim product hierarchy, Ive had a niggling feeling that I wanted more of what the SU has given me, but at the next level.
And now having compared them, and having the chance to make the SN2/NDX purchase, 2015 is looking good!
My dealer has ordered both together, and until I sell my SU, I will probably 'pimp it up' with the SN2 for a couple of weeks using it as pre-amp for the SN2 and streamer so Im still able to play music.
The NDX will remain at the dealer until I have sold the SU and got the funds to complete the purchase.
My dealer offered to let me have both straight away, but Im a bit old school like that preferring to pay for it before I get it!
From what I have read on here I think I need to be prepared for some ups and downs for a month or two until the SN2 has settled down.
If anyone has any other advice for me, apart from to sit back an enjoy the ride, Ill be glad to hear it!
I think this is the most beautiful two box solution in naim current lineup.
hmmmm one box versus two boxes. before you know it it becomes HCDR and XPS DR (4 boxes)
Enjoy the music

Yes, there is that to ponder!
But thanks, yes, I will enjoy the music, that has to be the number 1

+0.5 - almost but not quite true
- the original Supernait + NDX is the most beautiful; but I am biased.
And yes Chris, before you know it they will find new boxes to play with & 2 will become 4.
Well done Chris.
I bought the same two boxes 12 months ago. So far I've not succumbed to the temptation of adding power supplies but not saying never!
Enjoy!

Did you go for the Hi-Line straight away Mr Magoo? Or did you stick with the lavender interconnect for starters?
I ordered an extra Powerline so that I have one on each box and my dealer is lending me a Hi-Line, but I may have to save up some more readies if I wanted to go with it sooner rather than later!
I bought the SN2 & NDX 12 months ago then when I got to appreciate them I set about upgrading cables. I started with 2 PowerLines then went for a HiLine. At the time I made the next step there was a lot of talk about the benefits of upgrading the network cables. I decided it was worth a try and bought cables covering NAS > Router, Router to Wall Plug then Wall Plug > NDX. My 2 peneth reckons it was worth it. Finally I upgraded the speaker leads to Tellurium Black.
I have to say that some improvements were more noticeable than others and being open about my aural shortcomings I'm not sure a further big spend on power supplies would be justified.

Which improvements had most impact and which least?
dayjay it might sound stupid to say but the biggest improvements to my ears were made in moving my buying choice from the XS series boxes to the Classic series. The rest were incremental. A decent block and mains lead probably made more difference than the addition of the PowerLines which I bought used from an online retailer so they were 'run in' I think the Tellurium leads and the HiLine were very close after that with the network cables last.
Thanks Mr Magoo, I have an SN2 with a Hugo feeding it and have recently bought a Chord Anthem Reference which had an eye opening impact. I will slowly work my way through other cables and tweaks and its interesting to see what has had impact in other systems
I have to say that this string has been interesting in that it has left me wondering if there might be an element of familiarity breeding contentment in my experience. In one way as I have only used Naim equipment I've been unadventurous but I don't feel that my ears are good enough to appreciate and accurately store the sound from trying various leads over a period so with the exception of the network leads I set out to replicate the sound I heard and liked from the demo. I also sought out a pair of speakers that were voiced with Naim equipment in the Neat Momentum 3i's. In my view I was continuing the idea of synergy. The network leads, Audioquest Cinnamon were an experiment / indulgance.
I certainly use the Naim kit far more than I did it's preceding system so the liking for the Naim sound has been justified. In turn though whilst in other areas I would chase more for the sake of it, I am content with what I have for the moment.

and that's a very nice place to be
I should perhaps add the context of my journey to this set up.
8 years ago I was separated and with that happening in haste ripped all of our CD's into iTunes @ 128!
From an iPod > playing that through a Bose speaker > a B&W Zeplin > a SonoS amp/connect + System Audio speakers > SonoS Connect + Rega amp + AS's > the addition of a Rega DAC > present.
Glad to say though the path was enhanced by re-ripping everything into ALAC format which justified the next step to the Rega / SA set up.
With this in mind I'm wary about going further in case this leads to another substantial upgrade!
Thanks Mr Magoo, always interesting hearing other peoples journey and experiences.
I made the same move from su to sn2 + ndx. Started out with su, then added an ex-demo ndx as source and finally bought the sn2 as soon as it was available... but I did end up with four boxes (hicap dr and superline).
So when you ended up adding the 3rd and fourth box did you do source then amp or add both together Jumping Jack? Also, was it a quantum leap or a subtle increment in quality?
Nice to read about your setup Mr Magoo, I have a SN(1) with NDX & two more PSU boxes for them both to play with. But as I say in my previous post, I'm biased, the original SN is the dog dangly bits of integrated amps
(IMHO of course)
My question is why you have Wall Plug > Wall Plug to the NDX. I'm sure you have considered a wired ethernet to make that connection & obviously something makes that difficult. But wall plugs are not the best for noiseless connections & considering you have the excellent AQ Cinnamons around the rest of the system, it seems to be a bit of a ???.
So when you ended up adding the 3rd and fourth box did you do source then amp or add both together Jumping Jack? Also, was it a quantum leap or a subtle increment in quality?
I've found substantial benefits with both power supplies, but unless you are powering a phono stage from AUX2 or doing a lot of headphone listening then do the source (XPS DR) first. If you have a SN1, or are doing either of the above, then HC DR first.
Thank you Mark. It'll be the big money laid out first then!
Mike, It was a buildings issue. I've recently moved the Synology much closer to the NDX and once I've settled on the final position it will be hard wired. Also, as you'll have seen from previous posts it's been a steep learning curve that has inevitably included plenty of 'suck it and see' episodes.

The superline is not a power-supply but a phono-amplifier and it gets its power from the SN2.
I added the SuperLine first (it replaced a Lehmann Decade), and then I've stumbled across a pre-owned hicap dr (their very scarce on the second hand market) so I just had to try that too.
I don't think you can connect the synology directly to the NDX. You'll need a router between them...
Correct, but better (& cheaper) a switch
Switches create a network.
Routers connect networks, also link computers to the Internet.
Thanks guys. Yes. I appreciate that I'll need a router/switch in there.
The XPS DR looks like being the first target. However as soon as I get another box I'll have to buy a dedicated rack unit of some type which in turn will revolve moving furniture to accommodate it and disposing of an armchair so the cost will not just be the box but probably another £1500 at least on furniture. The job is suddenly growing like Topsy!
SN2 now in place in conjunction (temporarily) with my Superuniti since yesterday.
Still warming up, but sounding quite nice already!
I do like the System Automation function though - I knew it was a feature if using NDX and SN2 but hadn't realised it would work also with the SU. Nice to just be able to use the one remote / app for all!
Christmas will be spent doing a lot of listening, SU will be sold for the New Year, NDX will be collected early January.
Really looking forward to it.
Not listening! Lalala......
