Spotify Connect Arrives for Naim Streamers

Posted by: Arthur Geraerts on 15 December 2014

Best christmas present ever. Updated my UQ2 and it works like a charm!

Thanks guys! Naim rocks!

What cable do you need to update it, can you just connect it to your mac via a usb to usb cable?

Also does it enable you to basically use Spotify from your iPad and play through the UnitiQute? Thanks.

Hi Lewis, i followed exactly the Naim procedure. So ethernet connection and mini-USB to USB. Don't forget to update the PC or Mac with the required driver. Now i play Spotify from my iPhone and iPad direct to my UL. Nice: If you start Spotify and chose the Naim (Spotify Connect button)  the Naim switches automatically to the richt input.

Lewis, for most newer units you need a USB 2.0 Type A to Mini-B  & an ethernet

Then you will need the correct PC or MAC drivers

Its all in the instruction .pdf  including the links

Hi Lewis

the details are in the Official Post about how to do it, but to answer your question:

To update you will need a PC or Mac and a USB to mini-b or USB to RS232 cable, depending on the age of your product. Downlod the updater for your operating system from the link below:

Software Version 4.1 - PC Updater

Software Version 4.1 - Mac Updater

And yes, once you have updated your UQ, you will be able to connect through the Naim App into Spotify App and use it on your iPad.

You need Spotify Premium though to get Spotify Connect.

Good luck!

This works great on my NDX. Love the auto input switching and the transport buttons on the remote work too!

I will be another with a Sonos Connect for sale! Thanks Naim, very happy I invested in your electronics, you have brought my Kef R700's alive :-)

Lewis: Do you have a Qute 1 or a Qute 2?

Note that the Qute 1's can only take this if they've been upgraded to 24/192 capability.

Posted on: 15 December 2014 by True Blue

All working here on ndx. Very simple thankyou naim.

Posted on: 15 December 2014 by jukemark

Looks like it can't be streamed from the Desktop App (mac), unless someone knows different...

Posted on: 15 December 2014 by Gavin B

Presumably I can still update my original Qute to v4.1 even though I can't make use of the Spotify functionality

You can with Spotify Beta. It looks like that functionality will come to non-beta early in 2015.

Excellent to have this facility at last. Thanks for the update.

Unclear which port to select in the installation wizard.

I suppose we select com10 serial port when we are using usb connection. Is this right?

I found that without the USB cable plugged in (I tried running the update before updating my USB drivers, so had to unplug and sort that out first),  there were no port options listed in the drop down menu.  With it plugged in,  COM 10 appeared. Went ahead with that,  and it found my UQ2 straight away. So can't give any guarantees,  but you should be fine selecting COM 10.

  NO  !!!!

Select the port that the UpDater program gives you,  I believe however you will not have a choice,  it offers just one COM number.

Its not complicated, read the instructions & follow them.

I also found if you do make an error it will simply not allow you to go to the next step.,

Downloaded the beta, and working great. Thank you.

Hi folks

This may sound like a very dumb question, but I've never used Spotify before.  The upgrade went ahead without a hitch on my Unitiqute 2, but I can't get it to play music via Spotify.  I now have a regular Spotify account, the app is loaded on the iPad mini, and music only plays on the iPad mini.  Do you have to have a paid-for premium account with Spotify for it to "Connect" to the Qute?

Cheers

Connect is only available with a Premium account. There are opportunities for a month's trial etc depending on location

Have you hit the little speaker button and selected your Naim kit?

Posted on: 15 December 2014 by Winnie Bago

Ah......that explains it then.  The little speaker button only comes up with a confusing blurb for Connect.  I guess I'll give the trial a go.  Thanks for the clarification.

Ok thanks, so are you saying it needs to be connected via an ethernet cable as well as the USB (to the Qute)?  I thought it was just USB to the Qute in order to update it.

Mine is a Qute 2.

Sorry for the questions guys I will do the update later on when I get home, just wanted to check I had everything in place so I can get straight on with it later!

PS:  Thanks for Naim for this perfect update.  The Qute really is now the perfect all in one streamer

Okay... just paid my tenner and Spotify now says my account is Premuim but the only things shown on the 'Connect' page is the Nexus 7 and my Windows PC.... Shouldn't I see the ND5? Do I have to turn anything on with the ND5?

Posted on: 15 December 2014 by Goon525

You might have to turn the input on, which you can do via the Naim app. I must say, the process has worked very smoothly for me, congrats to Naim for that. Like others, I really wish they'd chosen Qobuz or Tidal, but this is a good start.

Connect is only available for mobile devices. If you want it in your desktop you should download the Beta version of Spotify. Search for "Spotify Beta" in Google and it will direct you to a download link

Yes I'm doing this on the Nexus 7...

Re using ethernet:  -  I've been testing the beta f/w over the last weeks & the numbers of revisions I installed with ethernet was always faultless.

However some users don't have RJ45 (ethernet) ports on their PC/MAC/Pads & found it can be done wirelessly,  so I tried it once & it worked OK.

But if you have RJ45 ports, ethernet is the only robust connection. Plus its clearly recommended by Naim in both the written/diagram instructions  & the www video.
