Spotify Connect Arrives for Naim Streamers
Posted by: Arthur Geraerts on 15 December 2014
Best christmas present ever. Updated my UQ2 and it works like a charm!
Thanks guys! Naim rocks!
Is the advice about volume correct? On my system the spotify volume control just turns up the volume on the SU. It momentarily blasted my speakers at 100!
The advice came from Tom during beta testing.
They were going to update the Spotify manual on the main website, but I've just checked and they haven't done it yet.
I think you're supposed to set it at max when you start listening. Sometimes it resets for no apparent reason.
Thanks for the tip. I will try to max the volume on Spotify app when I have UQ2 upgraded to 4.1. But if I am not mistaken when I was at Spotify app volume command via iPad directly controlled that of Muso. Selecting "extreme" file quality at Spotify and what is really on tap are different stories I suppose.
Hi all,
I have a problem: please help!!!!
Right now I fill like throwing the NDX5, spotify and the rest of it out of the window.
I have done all the upgrades (all fine), added premium to Spotify, done all the checks, but the Naim app on the iphone and the Spotify app do not connect: Naim keep asking to launch the Spotify app and when the music starts on Spotify I do not get the green speaker button on the naim app, and the music remains on the phone and that is it.
Shall I proceed with my intentions, or have I left something out?
Thanks folks.

Had this problem... reboot of the ND5 fixed it.
320 is not a waste at all in my opinion. I use it all the time to discover new music and artists for $10 a month. If I find something I want to explore further I buy the CD or in my next audio phase a lossless download. i can't think of a better value to allow me to trial an almost unlimited variety of music.
+1, I've had it since its free days and my family use it a lot. I spent a couple of hours listening to Catfish and the Bottlemen on it this week and realised I like them enough to buy the album. When I do buy it it will sound better than it did on spotify which is fine because spotify through my Naim is more than good enough for me to test it before I spend my money and its decent enough for my son or for background music at parties etc.
I agree with most of this except that if you had lossless you wouldn't need to buy the album! I'm trialling Spotify at the moment but it is no substitute for the real thing. For me, Spotify at £10 a month is expensive but Qobuz at £20 a month is cheap.

Alternatively, it's because the green speaker button is on the Spotify app, not the Naim one.
I do wish that NAIM had specified that the older products needed the 24bit/192kHz capability to run Spotify, as I could have sent my unit back for the upgrade prior to the launch.
I, for one, am quite pleased to have the spotify capability.
99% of my listening is as background music and 320K is fine for that. Also I'm using spotify more and more now to pre listen to artists/albums before going to the purchase stage (as recommended via the "What are you listening to..." thread) and the ability to listen to a fairly good replay helps enormously.
Free? I'm now paying £10pm which I wasn't a day ago. I was just saying in the office that this is probably my first 'life-style' monthly subscription. For example I don't pay for Sky and don't pay for a mobile phone. Is this the thin edge? :-(
We managed to get a 3 for 1 month Premium deal. I can't see us keeping it after February though, I know it's only a tenner but once the Muso goes upstairs I'll use the main system and if needed I'll use my free Spotify to check out any "new" finds, usually prompted by Radio Paradise tracks or this forum.
Of course the Mrs might want to keep premium when she gets full control of her Muso.
1. I want to thank Naim for bringing Spotify to our streamers. It was a long wait but worth it.
2. I could not be happier. I feel that (for now) The (virtuous) circle is complete: Local lossless files for 'eyes-closed-lights-down-not-doing-anything-else-but-listening' and Spotify for background and discovery
3.Spotify has become my defacto player outside the house (i.e. mobile and car) to the point that it has displaced itunes as a player on iOS. Spotify's app functionality, especially for premium subscribers, keeps on getting better and better. Spotify Connect and Naim Streamers are a match made in heaven.
4. I believe yesterday's long awaited firmware update is just beginning. I am sure that once the dust settles and the market players sort of stabilise, we'll see the likes of Qubuz and Tidal joining a future firmware update. It is only a matter of time. I firmly believe this is the future of music delivery. Whether it is lossy, lossless or HD, it will all come down the plumbing.
Currently the product data on naim-audio.com doese not indicate such and according to forum member HH no. I don't understand why not as the HDX and US stream radio and rips up to 24/192 as the servers do. Maybe Phil Harris or someone at Naim can officially advise. Actually, my US is in for service as the drive seems to have crapped out and expect it's return late next week. I'm getting great results streaming Deezer (44/16) via SONOS to NDAC but would like to try my Spotify stream via the US to NDAC.

You don't have to pay for it, do you? Don't want Sky - so don't pay. Don't want Spotify - don't pay. There's no difference.

Naim have already said this - I just can't find the relevant thread. I believe it's something to do with how the licence works and the type of machine that can be used for Spotify Connect.

Agree... I was being a bit tongue in cheek :-)
Umm. An odd thing just happened. Streaming stuff from my NAS all night on the new firmware with no problems. Just selected another album and... silence.
The App says it's halfway through the first track, the panel on the NDX says it's halfway through the first track, but there's silence.
Used the App to switch to a radio station, and immediately there was music. Switched back to UPnP and the same album that brought me silence, and it played fine.
Most odd.
Just happened again: finished playing one album (UPnP) selected another to play, both app and NDX say the first track is playing, the data is streaming, but not a peep from the speakers. Stopped the album, cleared the play queue, selected the album to play again, and this time I got music.
Not something I experienced under the old firmware.

This is kind of important: Toms advice was for the standalone streamers, where the slider controls the volume of the spotify stream (that is, in the digital domain). For unitis the spotify slider is an actual volume control for the naim unit, just like the naim app. So it should probably nevert be at 100 unless you want full volume out of your unit.
Not sure if this has been covered , I was using Spotify connect and when I click on the playing track to give a more detailed view usual type screen is shown, progress bar forward, backward stop/go button, but the volume control has the line but no cursor, and therefore no volume control.
You may see slider vol control on Spotify app when you hit that little speaker icon?

I accept Spotify doesn't work for critical listening but lossless streaming certainly isn't the answer for me & I still need to buy the album: CD for the car, a flac rip for my portable, not to mention my broadband is so bad I cant stream Qobuz anyway based on the trial I did. Very happy with the spotify upgrade which I use to trial new music before buying and my wife uses almost exclusively for listening. Can finally lose the irritating white box that is sonos connect..
Fueller - Do you find Spotify to sound different/better when played thru the Connect feature as compared to Sonos? Would be interesting to know, since I use Sonos exclusively... for now. Thanks.
Just discovered that my NDX is not compatible with this upgrade (2D..instead of 3D). Does anybody have a clue about how much it will cost to install the required hardware here in Europe?
I cant get the usb connection to show in the streamer updater, I've downloaded the usb drivers and installed them, but I have nothing in the drop down menu to select! can anyone help?
