U/L dead even before Spotify install .. Beware !
Posted by: dap1 on 16 December 2014
At home today got the email from Naim that we have all been waiting for re Spotify ... Watched video of update and followed instructions . All wired correctly ( USB ) to Laptop .. Installed streamer update to PC followed it to Connecation check and gives an option ... Select serial port to use ... Didn't give me an option but said may have to install drivers ... Followed PDF to silab website and downloaded driver ... As the PC was updating the drivers U/L died .. Only have green light on front panel now ... no sound no display no IP address found ... GONE !!! Won't eject a cd .... nothing ..
Rang Naim suggested turning off and back on with play button pressed for 5 secs .. Nothing no Ethernet light either .... So BEWARE something's afoot ... I now have 2 weeks off over Crimbo with a new pair of speakers on the way and my U/L will more than likely be stuck in the dealers or on a repair bench ,,, AARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH I WANT TO CRY. please let me know if anyone has had any problems
good luck !
Firstly, sorry to hear of your problem.
It seems unusual that the UL should develop a problem if the update process had not actually started i.e. the laptop could not be communicating with the UL since the usb drivers hadn't been installed and the UL had not been identified on the network by the updater.
I'm assuming that you've checked that this isn't just a fuse issue or does the "green light" rule this out?
I hope you resolve this soon. Good luck.
All I can offer is sympathy I'm afraid. I agree that it's odd that this has happened before you even had a driver for the serial port installed. I think the only thing that I did differently to you was to switch off my unit while I was downloading/installing the (USB in my case) driver.
I think Naim's upgrade software route is very poor. I have tried to upgrade the firmware on my 172 xs for a year no with no luck. It seems really archaic to me surely firmware updates can be done over the web without the need to run cables and PCs etc. My Sony PS3 is a dream to update, ditto my Denon Piccollo, naim ,don't even bother they are in the dark ages when it comes to updates, I got rid of my unitiserve due to it crashing at every update attempt, I can see my 172 xs going the same way.
very,very poor of naim.
I think I will sell and buy another more reliable brand. I bought into naim for the service and backup and reliablility. I was conned.
Very kind Graeme .... Yep in hindsight probably shd of kept my uniti and laptop disconnected until I was ready but I didn't think there would be any issue at all as I didn't even have the driver downloaded to pump anything into the unit ....
Im gonna have a not so merry silent Christmas
I've updated my NDS and Qute numerous times over the past weeks as part of the beta process. All went perfectly.
First, I've found the Naim boxes very resilient to the update process. If you accidentally stop part-way (as I did with my NDS), you can start from scratch with a re-install of the same update.
From the OP's description, it sure sounds like something quite unusual happened. Clearly the update had not started; the updater itself didn't 'brick' the device. I'm hopeful that a re-start of the U/L will bring it back to a state where either it starts itself or at least will accept the update.
I've always found the best practice to install the updater on my laptop, start it, then connect to the Naim box, then pick the port from the drop-down list, and proceed.

I suggest you send an email to Naim about this and then contact your dealer tomorrow. Once it is clear what is wrong it may be possible for the dealer to loan you something if the Lite needs to be repaired. It's very odd that it has gone wrong, as you weren't even sending any data to it. As Bart says, the update process is pretty resilient - I just plug my laptop into the SU, download the update wirelessly, start the updater, don't bother to turn off and on, and away it goes. It really is quite hard to go wrong, so something weird has clearly happened in your case. Good luck!

+1 - from the OP's description the updater hadn't begun to actually replace the firmware. I have lost connection between uploading and updating but aborting and restarting the product has saved the day. I can't see how the updating can "brick" anything as it doesn't seem to overwrite the firmware until very late in the process. Many of us updated firmware many times as betas and there were no reports of this. Try unplugging it for a minute and then rebooting - if that doesn't work I guess it's most likely to be a coincidence - my sympathies.
Very weird as I said ... In the last hour I have noticed all the lights have now come on on the front control panel they weren't on before but still no display no power to front usb no Ethernet light . Must be a poltergeist .. Taking it into my dealer on Thursday I,ll go in with puppy eyes and see if they feel sorry for me and maybe I,ll be able to loan something over Christmas .... And maybe the nice people at Naim can do the update ....
Do you like The Police? Have you been playing Ghost in the Machine?
im now listening to the Simon and Garfunkel .. The sound of silence

If you are totally comfortable with the update install process (which I know you're not at this point) I'd try to install the update.
Hi.
I had the exact same issue with my UL when upgrading to the previous software version.
My bad was that I did not connect the RJ45 cable from my router to the UL. I only connected the USB cable from the UL to the Laptop.
The only option left to me was to have NAIM rebuild the whole software on my UL and re-tested it thoroughly but it took them 5 weeks to do it.
Sorry dude.

Hi Maze,
Sorry to hear about your experience. I had no problem whatsoever to install 3.22 and 4.01 firmware on my NAC-N 172XS. My only issue was to find and to download the correct COM3 driver from the web, I had to try a couple of them. Send an e-mail to e.g. Phil.Harris@naimnet.com for tech support.
The following instruction may be helpful:
- ยท Download and install a Virtual Com Port Driver (VCP Driver) on your Windows PC, which simulates a COM port on one of the USB ports. This VCP driver worked on my Windows 8.1 PC: http://www.silabs.com/products...ridgevcpdrivers.aspx
- Create a connection between your Naim device using its USB mini-B port and a USB port in your PC.
- Start the Naim Download program applications and follow the instructions in the software.
Good luck!
