Connecting to Spotify

Posted by: Nicolo on 17 December 2014

Loaded up 4.1 onto my NDS (main listening room), SuperUniti (lounge), ND5 XS (master bed), UnitiQute2 (study), UnitiQute2 (guest room). All units are on the same network and all are hardwired.

The only device recognized by Spotify is the SuperUniti in the lounge and I can play to it with no problems. Sounds good too for 320 Kbps.

Despite rebooting the other Naim devices, rebooting all the network switches and routers, reloading the Spotify app, trying my iPhone And iPad which both have Spotify loaded, restarting the iPhone and iPad i cannot get the other Naim devices to appear as devices able to be streamed to in the Spotify app.

All very perplexing.

Another data point, when I updated the ND5 it appeared in the Spotify app with its default network name. But when I reset it's network name, it disappeared.

Have you enabled the Spotify input on each box. You need to do every one.

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by Nicolo

Yes, Spotify input enabled on every Naim box. Tried disabling and then renabling. Still no luck.

i know from other posts that Spotify works on all the boxes I have. Has anyone got it to work on more than one Naim box simultaneously?

Suspect it must be a network or Spotify issue but damned if I can figure it out... ;-(

Try stopping it on the SU and then trying it on something else. That will tell you if the other boxes are set up properly.

Then, if you engage multi room on the SU, does it then work? I only have one Naim box, so this is purely guesswork.

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by Nicolo

Turned off SU but still cannot get any of the other boxes to be recognized. Spotify sees my iPhone and iPad just fine...  Grrrrrr

Every other function on the boxes works fine. So I don't think it was a bad software upgrade. And I followed the same process for all boxes.

Most peculiar.....

I have an SU and 2 Qutes. Have just done the upgrade and I can get Spotify out of all of them individually.

Does not seem to do multi room though.

And there is some odd behaviour. For example, I started playing through the SU.  Wnet back to Spotify, changed the device to one of the Qutes, pressed play in Spotify and it started playing the previous input selected on the Qute (uPnP). Went to the Qute in the Naim app, changed the input to Spotify, back to Spotify to press play and nothing happened.  Kill both apps, restart and I could play from the Qute.

But it can definitely get Spotify sounds out of all 3.

You should stop doing that. :-)

Doesn't the spotify license only allow for one device to be playing at any given time? You can't, for example, have spotify running on your laptop and phone at the same time, using the same account...

So upgraded my wife's Spotify account to premium and using her account on her iphone I cannot see any of the naim boxes in the Spotify connect window. Ummmmm, is this a north american bug!

Think I am going to give up for now - very frustrating.  It shouldn't be this hard ;-(

I take it you have updated the firmware and enabled the input in settings?

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by hungryhalibut

Is the iPhone on the same network as the streamer? Try killing the spotify app and restarting it from within the naim app.

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by Nicolo

Yep - firmware at 4.1 and Spotify enabled on all boxes.

Currently it allows you to have one device streaming at a time, although they are advertising family membership at the moment.  You can have a number also playing in offline mode at the same time too

All iOS devices on the same network as the Naim boxes. Obviously IOS devices are wireless and Naim boxes are wired. Not quite sure what u mean about starting Spotify from within the naim app.

Life just got better tho - A glass of red wine to soothe the frustration ;-)

Close the spotify app by swiping it off the screen. Then go into the naim app, select the Spotify input and near the bottom you will see 'launch Spotify app'. Hit that and it will take you to Spotify. Set something playing, press the little speaker in the bottom right hand corner and see if the name of your naim box pops up. Should work.

Don't see an option to launch the app. Just one to download the app.

The spotify app is on your phone and up to date?

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by Nicolo
Both the Naim app and Spotifiy apps are up to date. Deleted and reinstalled both.

Going to get my dealer to see if he can fix. Does seem a lost cause at this point. Oh well - would have been a nice feature especially for my wife who loves to cook and listen to her latest music.

Just one last question,  your phone is on the same network as your Naim devices and it has wifi switched on?

Posted on: 17 December 2014 by Nicolo
Hi DayJay,

Yes the phone is connected to the same network. I can get one of the 5 Naim devices to connect but none of the other four.

There is more to life than getting Spotify to work!

If I get it resolved will post the findings/solution.

What router have you got? Most likely a Multicast/IGMP issue with the router.

Look - there it is, near the bottom.....

Hi HH, work managed to get in the way of my Spotify troubleshooting.  So tried out what you suggested - helped if I used an iPad with Spotify loaded! And... Same result.

But here is the weird thing. If I use my iPhone or iPad using my account, I can see the SuperUniti but none of the other Naim devices. If I log onto Spotify with my wife's account on the same devices I cannot connect to the ANY of the devices including the SuperUniti.  I think this may be a Spotify account or set up issue.  However why I can only see one Naim device using my account and not the other devices is baffling.

The only other thing I can think of is if it is something to do with the fact I changed the Naim device network name from the default setting. Has anyone else connected to Spotify after changing the default device name?

Posted on: 18 December 2014 by J Saville
Again, it's probably router related. Spotify, airplay and upnp all use a form of multicast for device discovery. They can't see it because the router can't handle multicast services properly.

What router are you using?

An AirPort Extreme with a TimeWarner Cable Arris modem.
