Synology DSM 5.1 - unstable update
Posted by: quickben on 19 December 2014
For users of Synology NAS running DSM 5.1, the update released this week (5.1-5021) looks particularly unstable. A number of unresponsive/semi-bricked devices, though it appears you can roll-back to 5004. I am postponing updating my DS213j while I wait and see whether Synology release a patch.
Thanks for posting. Won't bother updating mine yet then.
Its working fine for me.
What is unstable ????

Thread on Synology Forum - posters reporting losing access to the NAS, lost file shares etc. Others reporting very slow responses. I happened to check while it was d/l-ing and decided not to do the update.
After your post I checked the Synology Forum, & yes I read the reports. Problem is there are a lot of words but nothing that has any useful technical feedback that has indicators of what's wrong. The other thing is they are more than a day old so I wonder what's happened today, I will take a look later when the USA come to life.
Meanwhile it all seems to be working & playing music OK for me; I can access the webpage & see everything as normal, & I can see & manipulate files in the Music share in Windows Explorer
I will keep a watch open for maybe a corrective upgrade from Synology
Both of mine updated without any issues.
There is always a post on the Synology forums with every update saying that something got broken. It's just the internet.
Well after 4 albums & a lot of fiddling around trying to to find a problem & make something go wrong, I'm pleased to report my DS214 is rock solid with the new DSM (5021).
Looking at the Synology forum it seems that after a few days of doom & disaster swapping ever worse horror stories, the interweb panic mongers have gone back into their caves. It has a certain similarity to this forum, nothing works, its all a crock of pooh, but truth be told they probably have a weird & wobbly network set up (& Synology set up).
You've told us before Wat
Speak as you find, but many others will disagree
Yes I updated and the first reboot took too long (20mins?) and I had to hard cycle the power myself.
Weird, once I'd downloaded the file, I left it mine to load the upgrade while I made coffee, all done when I got back - maybe 10mins at most.
Mine updated and is running fine as well. (And I had good luck with Synology support the only time I needed it.)
But all of these experiences are one-offs. The bad ones get reported online and the good ones . . . don't.
I have found Sinology support dire .. would never buy another of their products.
Wat
I wouldnt say you are wrong about the support, however at least its possible to revert back to a previous version if it goes pear, unlike a certain hifi manufacturer i could mention, but won't mention any Naims

But the bullet and so far, so good. Good to read the comments - i find the Synology technology somewhat arcane
Arcane - ????
"difficult or impossible to understand - requiring secret knowledge"
I find just the opposite, its the simplest media server, compared to others (as good as they are reputed to be). The rest of the features that I use for only audio are also so simple & easy to understand & use. Best of all the system tells you when & only when you need to know or do something.
Outside of that it is supposed to be, & is, a fit & forget item.
Mine updated with no issues. People need to understand that the consequences of NOT updating may be significantly greater than from updating.
Security updates tackle KNOWN security flaws, some critical, one's that are known to be exploited for real by naughty people and not updating potentially leaves your NAS/operating System exposed.

No problems Wat, it sure seems like you pulled the short straw on that one
Touch wood, I have no hard or software issues & can only say their updating & other www functions, plus set up & day to day use is, for me at least, faultless.

+1. I currently own my 3rd Synology and they all have worked very reliably so far.
It was hardware rather than software issues in my case. It wasn't well built and had a non-Intel processor that I only became aware of after buying it. It is also very plastic. When its fan broke, Sin sent a replacement fan in a jiffy bag, but no instructions or even a packing note and no reply to any of my e-mails asking for help. I got an engineering friend to have a go and he said it was not easy, but he did it. It worked for a while and then pop and it went again ... no reply at all from Sin. Now the main board seems to be on the blink. Hence my rants - makes me feel better. I am the type of consumer who likes things that just work: Apple, Sonos, Linn, Chord. Panasonic and Naim (mostly) - at least Naim is very helpful even if not everything works as we'd like: they really care and that goes a long way - the Naim build quality is also different class.
I find the Sin software tolerable, but nothing special. The iTunes server was dreadful. Of course the non-Intel processor means MinimServer was a non-starter.
My solution is to reuse the disks in a different chassis - not another Sin - probably D-Link.
I only need it as a backup file store.
Maybe I was very unlucky, but that is how it goes. I guess if it just worked as some have found then I would never have known how poor the support was. For example, I think Sebo makes the best vacuum cleaners, but I have never had to test their support as it just works. So when things work everything is rosy in my garden.
I hope everybody else's Sin works for them - for me it is 1 out 5 rating for the product on Amazon.
All the best, Wat
Sorry Mike to be a pain with this ... I'll get myself an alternative and promise to forget all about Sin and not mention it again: just irritates me when things don't work and the service is so dreadful
Wat
isn't it strange how our experiences affect our views, or maybe it isn't strange at all. i have had 2 Synology NAS drives and apart from the odd firmware update issue, which gets sorted quickly, they have both been faultless. However i have been in contact with support on a couple of occasions and always had a timely response.
now ask me about Naim and my gripes are endless Including lose RCA connector and having to turn the unit off every once in a while cause it drops of the network, and no my network is fine. Don't even get me started with the farcical nstream and firmware updates. Legendary build and support, sorry ive seen none of it. Two emails to support and not even a single response from them. I for one will not be handing any more of my hard earned cash to Naim.
Once bitten and all that, but with Naim they haven't been content with a single bite.

Wat
sorry just to add you don't need an intel unit to run minimserver. Neither of my NASs have been intel and both run minimserver perfectly.

My Synology had an auto update last night to DSM 5.1-5021 update 2, it looks like its corrected whatever was wrong in the 1st rev of 5021
If you don't have auto update, its waiting for you to hit the go button.
