Regarding spotify, AirPlay, WiFi, bonjour etc.

Interesting article from Phil. Because Spotifiy pauses and is not stable on my UQ2 I bought the net analyzer. Not familiar with the tool yet but the first scans show that the bonjour service on the Qute goes on and of.
Has someone noticed similar problems?
Peter - if you are using Spotify Connect on Naim - your iPad drops out of the equation - as the main communication is occurring between UQ2 and the Spotfiy servers on the internet via your home broadband router.
So is the sound ok? But occasionally your iPad loses sight of the UQ2?

Simon,
Streaming locally from UPnP to the UQ2 is stable.
Using iRadio I have an average of one drop out in every12 hours but it always plays further within 30 sec or so.
Playing spotify from my iPad is stable, no drop outs.
Exactly the last thing you mentioned is happening. The iPad loses sight of the UQ2. I switched sync in spotify from extreme to normal but that didn't solve the problem.
Ok, you don't say whether the UQ2 playing Spotify is stable?
But I suggest you use a different wifi access point and not use your home router one for media control use. Get a little Apple Airport express, plug that into your switch, and connect to that with your iPad. If you can switch off the router wifi.
Let your broadband router do what it is designed to do best, do the connection and routing to the Internet. Let your standalone switch and wifi access point do everything else. I suspect it will all start to work more reliably.

Yes Simon its the full version of NA; I'm monitoring the LAN now and still no sign of the bonjour logo.
I thought that UHES, my supplier, had fixed the IP addresses when the system was set up. However, I've noticed the IP address wandered (after power cuts or rebooting 'Qutes).
I've checked the set-ups this morning and DHCP is enabled on them all.
I don't think that there is a local domain name, although sometimes its difficult getting access to my QNAP NAS (especially when trying to set up minim and asset).
The Netgear Switch is set below the Cat 5E and 6 patchboards and is Prosafe GS748T, and the router is the N600.

Hi Simon,
Many thanks for your reply but your answer puzzles me. I don't think buying more equipment (Switch, airport expres) is the solution.
The facts:
Streaming Spotifiy to any other device in my home, wired or via wifi, is stable.
The UQ2 is also wired. Since UPnP (even for high res files 24/96) and iRadio works fine, we can conclude that this connection is also ok.
Do you agree so far?
The problem:
Playing spotify on the UQ2 is not stable. Deriving from the facts above I don't think there is a problem in the communication between the UQ2 and the spotify servers related to the music stream.
Do yo agree?
So, not knowing enough of this stuff, my conclusion would be that there goes something wrong in the communication related to controlling spotify and the UQ2. I don't know how this communicatin is realized and which protocols are used, but in my opinion the source of the problem lies in there.
Do you agree?
If we could agree on these points we might be able to narrow down the problem further.
many thanks in advance.

Peter,
You didnt have a option in your router that controls down or up streams?
In mine was the option QoS that causes the problem.
When disabled everything went well.
I tried to enabled it this mornig and all ,accept spotify works perfect.
UPnP via a HD connected to the router, Iradio all went well.
i still think there is a simular option in your router.
marcel
Peter, can you define what you mean by Spotify is unstable on the UQ2. I thought it played but just disappeared from the iPad from time to time (That is what the AirportExpress would most likely help with)
i'm a but unclear of what is specifically not working.
Simon
Peter, if you have the QoS enabled on your N600, do you have it assigned to the address of the UQ2. That should be optimum, otherwise best ensure it is disabled as Marcel suggests.
Simon
Stephen, I am at a loss. I would stop from the bottom up testing each step. Can you set a standalone switch, with a seperate wifi access point.. Don't connect to router or Internet. You can start by manually assigning the addresses unless you want to use the DHCP in an AirportExpress. Can you see the Bonjour service responses?
Then keep adding and building up until it stops working...
Just one thought, you haven't got something IGMP enabled have you? If so turn off.. I am going to have a look at your switch to see if that can do something it shouldn't.
Simon
Edit: Stepehen you have a switch which supports some higher function management features... And it has the ability of blocking unknown multicast addresses; ie this is what Bonjour uses...
So you need to connect to you switch with a browser and check and change if appropriate its config to stop blocking unknown multicast addresses, and disable snooping.
http://documentation.netgear.c...748T_SW_UM-6-11.html
if this is double Dutch to you you are best using a simple little consumer Netgear switch..they don't have these features.
Thanks Simon - I spent the afternoon checking out the switch. It appears that the firmware can't be upgraded, so will have to do what you suggest. I tried to log onto the router to no avail so will read your suggested documentation.
Thanks again Simon for being so helpful.
Well Simon snooping appears be disabled as is the block on multicast address.
I have rebooted the beast and will report back ...
Are all here with dropout problems on firmware 4.1? I believe some of the new UQ2 with BT shipped with 4.0 which I believe suffers from dropout issues with Spotify.

Hi Simon, Marcel,
thanks for your answers. I don't have a QoS on my router. Contacting my ISP learned that my router has a WMM (wifi multi-media) function that does something similar. I've disabled this function, but this, at first, did not make any difference. After rebooting the Qute and my network. I had trouble to reconnect spotify and the Qute. Somehow after a while I managed to re establish the connection and now it has been playing for more than an hour with no pause. Problem solved? Maybe?
For now I'm going to enjoy the music, hoping it all stays stable. I'll keep you posted. Many thanks for your efforts!
Simon - update
I managed to access my switch (not so difficult afterall), and as I said snooping is disabled. I reset it through the administrative software and low and behold the response time on my 'Qutes is much faster, but the Network Analyser still does not show the bonjour logo.
I will send a note to Naim inquiring about it ...
Thanks again for your help Simon

Hi, after a week of playing without any problems, I think it is save to say that spotify is now stable on my UQ2.. Thanks NAIM!!!
