System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

Seconded, Very nice oak plinth indeed. If i'd ever get a LP12 this would be the one.

Agreed. If I were buying a new LP12 I would probably go for a similar plinth.

They appear to be FLASH pictures so ipad won't show them

Hi Graeme, levelling can be done in three ways:

 - the pods come with 7 different strengths supporting from 0.5 kg to 64 kg, useful if like most speakers the weight distribution is not equal.

 - by adjusting each pod individually -  a spanner is provided to do this.

by moving the supports back and forth - the rear support on my speakers are positioned some 10 cms inwards.

I have also used the pods to support my audio stands.

Hi Aleg, I was thinking that this was the problem. I use photobucket and flash was the default option within the "insert media" option on the Naim site there are a number of other options there but  none appear to be universal e.g. QuickTime. Do you how to correct this?

Thanks

Gerry

Simple

Don't use Insert Media, but use Insert Image (button left of the smiley looking like a picture)

Cheers

Interesting set up.  I'm curious - since I own a 150 amp but am only using Intro 2s - how do you like running the 150X through SBLs?  Do you feel like it's enough power?

Basically, yes. I read a lot of opinions about it, ranging from 'they're easy to drive, anything will be fine', via '140 will be ok as a minimum' from an experienced dealer, to 'only a 250 or better will do' from experienced users.

Ultimately the eternal mantra of only being able to tell for yourself applies, but in my case I got the SBLs at a no-risk price just to try them with my Qute. They were fine. I can easily imagine that they would sound better with a lot more amp behind them, but the sound wasn't massively thin or anything like that.

Adding the 150X has been a step up across the board, and I'm certainly enjoying it so far, even if better results might be achievable with better gear. So I see it more in terms of the speakers being up to the task of showing the virtues of better equipment, rather than being intolerant of anything but the best.

Dave, that is a well reasoned response, and one i wholeheartedly agree with. Having run my SL2 with a Qute to some much more exotic Naim pieces, they do indeed respond to each step incredibly well but at the same time remain incredibly musical and insightful with modest gear. A neat trick and one that not many speakers can pull off. I'd put Kans in the same bracket.

No changes but a new angle, thought I would post before a possible speaker change.

That looks like a pretty limiting speaker placement - have you tried anywhere else?

But all in all, looks like a nice, comfortable room!

Yes, bring them forward towards the edge of the carpet to give 'm space.

If they are Linn Kans, they are fine whrer they are providing the back wall is solid.

When you move Kans out in the room, they'll lose everything good about them.

Posted on: 01 February 2015 by gary yeowell
They don't look like Kans to me Kuma, i could be wrong but the dimensions look a little different.
Posted on: 01 February 2015 by DrMark

It's not even against the wall (I had thought about Linn Kans, although these do look quite a bit smaller to me in the photo.) What about having them "boxed in" - almost in 2 cul-de-sac; that is what I was referring to.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. They are Epos ES11 and do sing a little better out another 6" but For obvious reasons this is as far out as they can go. I think the grills confuse people, I made the grills to stop temptation from the little people (my wife is a childminder). They are about 8" out and that tames the bass but do sweeten with a bit more space.

I have driven my latest SBLs with a NAP 150x and now with my latest Supernait. The SN is obviously much more capable, but the 150x was a sweet and competent amp.

Last night I tried the SBLs with the Nait3 I have just bought from a friend to use it with vinyl, and I must say that they sounded even better than with the 150x. They are definitely not difficult to drive, but they will respond, I believe, to huge increments in amplification.

Ian F, be very interested to hear what the SL brings to the table with your set up - pretty much same as mine bar the 2nd 555 (you lucky so an so...)

oh, and 3yr old with prodding fingers has obliged putting the speaker grills back on. They do look so much cooler without....

Hi Robbo,

So there is someone else out there with Vectors!  I spent nearly two years auditioning speakers and even though I couldn't afford them, my dealer sent me a pair of Vectors because he thought I would like them - I did and a year later he sold me the very same pair ex-dem.  Although they do sound better with the grills absent, I expect keeping small fingers out will be more beneficial to the sound in the long term!

You're right, I am lucky to have the second 555 but you seem to be lucky too with the 552/500; I'm running a 252/300.  I did wonder when I went for the 555 whether I should save for longer and go for the 552 but there is such a vast difference in price.........

Cheers,

Ian

I have NDX, Supernait, Ovator 400 after a couple of variations over the past few years. As the dog hasn't shown any real interest in the boxes/ cables so far (famous last words....), I decided to move things back downstairs to the living room from the bedroom (which is all sloping ceilings and didn't do things justice at all). After a long Saturday I ended up with this. There are still a few things to address; the walls are generally a bit bare, and there are a couple of large holes that need filling where bookshelves, etc. had been attached. I also need to look at the cables, which are a bit of a disgrace (not just the cable coming down from the centre speaker), and the room itself is a bit "bright" acoustically (wooden floor, no curtains or rugs, etc.). That said, the sound is still a massive step forward for me + there seems to be a real synergy between the components. There is even space for my old LP12 that was so expertly seen to by Peter at Cymbiosis last summer, but I really can't bring myself to risk that with the dog just yet.......

Looks great Bilf! Love your profile picture as well - Welsh or Airdale?

LP12, Naim and Harbeth system

I have been making some changes to the installation of my system and would welcome advice on what to try next. System is LP12/Radikal; CDS3/XPS2; 282/Supercap/250.2. Changes are:

1. electronics moved out of alcove on right of speaker (now additional shelving for records);

2. some of system moved from tall 5-shelf Target stand (Sound Org look-alike) to the Hutter rack. (This was only done yesterday evening but initial listening suggests some improvement.)

It goes without saying that I need to find an electrician to install a separate power supply for the Naim equipment.

First question. Do Hutter users have experience of optimum means of interaction with soft wood flooring? At the moment I have spikes into the floor. I have Atacama supports under the speaker stands. I believe neither of these would be ideal for the Hutter. How about the alternative Hutter feet? Naim chips?

Second question. The Hutter rack I bought has another two shelves. Would it be beneficial, apart from aesthetically, to buy another base and put the LP12/Radikal and 282 on Hutter? This is really a question for LP12/Hutter users or those who have rejected Hutter for LP12. (I don't have a wall for an LP12 wall support.)

Third question. Does any Hutter user have experience of adding glass and cups/balls under CD player or LP12?

Apologies if these questions have had answers elsewhere. I have read quite a lot of rack threads and not seen anything specifically on these topics. And I apologise too to the Hutter nay sayers! I am sure that Fraim would be ideal but I am stretched for space at the moment - that might change.

Thanks, Clive

Can't advise on the questions you've asked, Clive, but if you haven't already done so you might try putting a Powerline on your Naspc. I found it made a very worthwhile improvement to the 282.  I got further, though smaller, improvements from putting the Napsc on my rack and plugging the PL for it into my dedicated rings-main. Last two tweaks cost nothing, of course.
