System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

And do I see a Lehman Linear SE too?

Hi David,

it´s 172 / 200.

And yes, Lehmann Black Cube Linear SE, who feeds AKG K812pro.

The equipment stand looks like something from Ikea that you've put feet underneath and added a self-supporting middle shelf.....is this something you've done recently?

I'm 99% sure it's the Ikea Expedit/Kallax (dirtcheap at only 20,- Euro's/UKP)

The middle shelf already comes with it. looks great as a system support, LoFi.

In the past I've used an Ikea Corras bedside table as a rack for my Naim system:

It may well be a modified Expedit and I actually have 3 of them in my music room for my books and albums.  A 1x5, a 2x4 and a 4x4.  (pics when I've finished setting up)

The Corras range has long gone and tt's a shame the Expedit has recently been discontinued because the Kallax frame is quite a bit thinner.

Why did you sell that nice nSAT speakers????

Good question, Clearaudio lover. I wish I didn't!

At that time I bought the n-Sats (around 2007/2008) I lived in a small appartment with horrible room acoustics. Every ported (bass-reflex) speaker suffered from very annoying, uncontrolled, boomy bass.

Therefor I was more or less forced to choose a sealed cabinet design, like the n-Sats.

During summer 2010 I moved to my current, slightly bigger appartment with much better room acoustics. I got some Diapason Micra's that had a more spacious, 3D soundstage, compared to the n-Sats. In 2013 I traded the Diapason's for my current Penaudio Rebel's.

Nevertheless, I still prefer speakers that can be placed close to a wall, for visual and practical reasons. If Naim decided to make a new small speaker again, like the n-Sats, that can be placed close to a back-wall, I'd certainly be tempted to try/buy them!

Just picked up a very lovely mint set of cherry finish NSats and stands. They are indeed special little boxes and i remember now how much i liked my last set.

You guessed it, it's Ikea.  I did this a couple of years ago when I needed a quick 'n dirty hifi rack and it works so well I've left it in place and don't really feel the need for anything else. I used the two vertical dividers to prop up the center shelf, because otherwise all that would be holding it up are some wimpy dowels.  I also glued all the joints when assembling it to give it greater strength and rigidity.  It's actually very strong and rigid and also quite lightweight.

I use a couple different platforms between the gear and the rack.  The bottom two are made by FIM and consist of a maple butcher block separated from a thin sheet of MDF by three roller bearings.  The turntable sits on a Symposium Svelte Shelf+.  I did have roller bearings underneath the entire rack, but now use large Black Ravioli footers (feets?)

Thanks!

Thanks for that Lo-Fi.

Unfortunately the Expedit replacement, Kallax, has a 2cm slimmer and lighter frame. Potential effects on sound quality aside, it now means it wouldn't be an exact fit with my 3 Expedit units.

Lovely set up Maxbertola, but for a bit more stability you can flip the rack over!

I've recently upgraded my turntable: from a VPI Scout II to a Classic I witch Signature arm (with Nordost Valhalla cabling):

Very nice indeed JJ, Is that a SuperLine / HC, or a HC for the NDX and a NAP100 ?

Still think you have to place the Superline to the left and the HC at an other place

Now the SL sits above the NDX power supply and next to the HC one
