System Pics 2015
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.
The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.
Chris, amazing room! Do u worry about sun damage to your speakers?

I'd also be interested in your experience as my speakers also back on to a right angled glass window/wall. They are only a couple of months old so I'd like to know what to expect.
Fredrik,
How well does the Quite drive your Dynaudios? Are they a difficult load? Lastly, would you buy them again? Thanks for your insight!
ATB,
Mark
Mark, for what it's worth, I have the X12's and my Qute2 drives them just fine. I did add a NAP 100, but not because I thought the Qute was deficient or that the X12's needed more. And I like the Dynaudio small speaker sound.
Bart,
Thanks for the insight on the X12's. Do you position them like Fredrik against the wall? Does the rear port pose a problem with this type of placement?
Thanks,
Mark

IMHO the Qute drives them very well. They have a low sensitivity but compensates by being a 8 ohm nominal speaker. So I don't think they are a difficult load but you can't play at PA levels.
I would definitely buy them again.
I had my Uniti2 in this system earlier but I think the Qute drives them almost as well as the Uniti did. I was able to go a bit louder with the Uniti but at the levels I mostly listen at the Qute is great.
I also really like the Dynaudio sound and I think Naim & Dynaudio work well together. I am a bit curious about how PMC's Twenty-series sound but PMC is hard to find in my parts of Sweden.
My X14's is about 4" from the wall and I think that works, a bit more would be better. At louder levels I get a bit of a mid bass bump but at normal levels it's fine.

Love the oak veneer on PMC speakers, very nice.
I will finaly post some pictures of my humble system this years edition. ![]()
Hi Chris Bell,
Don't want to hijack this thread but since Im still waiting for the Ovator-Titan shoot out to happen at my home and you and me having almost identical systems...what its THE big thing Titans do better?
I have to say I prefer the look of my Ovators by quite a large margin, but hey...thats not important compared to how the sound
of course...

A couple of months in with the mu-so and I'm well pleased.
My system did not changed much except to swap my Nait 5i-2 to Nait 1. (CDS3/XPS2/Nait 1/NAT 05XS/HC/Neat Petite SX).
It sounds fabulous and marvelous to me and it sounds better and better as time goes by.
Cheers,
Patrick

And the Ovators looked mighty fine in gloss white whereas the Titans just look well.... How can I say.... Conventional...
But it is the Music that matters.
All the best and enjoy the music.

My speaker adventure started last year when I borrowed a pair of Kudos Super 20's. While they did not reproduce the scale of the S600's, their high frequency extension and detail was significantly better. I have great admiration for the Ovator’s, but felt the BMR was not reproducing high frequencies as I like. In came the Kudos Titan’s, a big risk that proved to be a big challenge to set up properly. It was worth the effort as they sound great. I’ve already tweaked them by changing out the factory links with Chord Sarum links.
With the high frequencies sorted out on my speakers, my glass and concrete living room was revealing too many reflections. In came 4 Vicoustic Wave-Wood panels and 2 bass traps for the corner. I cannot emphasize the difference basic acoustic treatments can make. Instead of listing to the room (and all of the reflections) I am hearing a pair of very good speakers. A significant and inexpensive upgrade.

A smart system, chosen with brains and ears. You obviously love FM, and do not care too much for current fashions.

Your room looks fantastic, I always imagined you had a turn table - not sure why that is though :-)

Those rear-ported X14s need a lot more breathing room. Dynaudio speakers in general actually. I would say 6-12" is the minimum distance from the wall.

That whole exposed plywood thing must seem a bit "cheap" when compared to the flawless finish of those beautiful S600s that you had. The Titans look like something I'd knock together. But I'm sure they sound great.

Since that's not my main system and mostly used for background music and radio I can live with that compromise.
I find the exposed edges an elegant detail... They integrate well into my modern home. The fit and finish of the Titan's is exceptional, I assure you they don't look "knocked together" in person. When I look at the speaker market, there are very few designs that stand out. Most speaker makers are building the same old tired design with rear ports and no attention to decoupling unwanted vibrations. Derricks design uses the best traditions of great engineering and modern SEAS drivers. The result is a tuneful and involving sound that I never find boring. Much like old my DBLs, the Titan's play all music well without fatigue or compression.

Thanks Fredrik- that's what I was afraid of with the rear port.
I have owned the ContourS3.4 and found them a very good match with Naim, but again, rear ported necessitates placing them in the room a bit. Thanks for your replies.

Mark

Oh...if only.......!
I think the Titans are set to be a classic. I have heard quite a few main stream speakers over the years and for me few of them have captured my attention and imagination quite like the titans. I have heard the Titans, mainly accompanied by Naim, but also with other electrics too including Chord electonics and they have always stopped me in my tracks and made me sit and listen. In a well set up system they have a level of reality, immediacy and emotion which I find very compelling. Not for some I'm sure, but for me they're just the ticket. Money no object, I'd be straight down my local dealers for a pair!
That's some set up you've got there Chris and with that view, that's truly a little slice of heaven...very nice.
Must say i think they look great in that finish and that room Chris. I have never been disappointed after hearing them, with both Naim and Linn electronics. Can't say the same for much of the rest of the Kudos range, which have been hit and miss for me.

That photo does not do them justice, they are exquisite when physically in front of you!!
