System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

Nice mix of kit and a lovely room - great colours too. Seeing the SL2 speakers reminds me that there are not a lot of suitable speakers for close to wall location. A shame as it's aesthetically pleasing and a much better use of space.

Thanks James, though it took me 2 attempts to get the wall the shade of Grey i originally was after.

The room is only 3.5 x 7m  (two rooms, knocked into one), so the speakers have to work against the solid wall to keep as much space as possible.

I have a spare plinth in Beech that i'm spraying Black to see how that might look in place of the Maple.

Only seen one in pictures and thought it looked stunning.

the speakers may sound better if placed along side the small wall (3,5 m).

Yeah, that's where they are placed. The long wall being the dark Grey.

Looks a great room and layout rackkit.

What is it about the design of the SL2s that allow them to be placed up against the wall, unlike other speakers?

They look excellent like that, and in the maple. Very nice.

What rack did your equipments sit on previously? How do you find the effects after installing the Fraim? Does it result into more visually appealing than sound improvement?

Sorry for the late reply mikapoh. Previous rack was by Custom Design, which was very good, but Fraim has added more stability and visual appeal than sound improvement as it was sounding pretty fine anyway!

Looks very classy too Pixies.

My NDX/SN2 will be getting a rack treat any day now, nice to see that

a low rise stack will look good

I think it's something to do with the gap between the two units that acts as port so it uses a solid wall behind it to help boost the low end output.

I'm sure there are others with more knowledge than me of them who can say more though.

Very happy with them and was lucky to get hold of this used pair as they don't come up for sale too often.

ATC SCM40 arrived last Thursday and it's been pretty much music 24/7 since that.

Patu,

Can I ask the type of acoustic panels behind your speakers, and what effect do they have on the sound in your room? Do you have panels placed anywhere else? Thanks.

Posted on: 27 April 2015 by Patu

joerand,

They're Ecophon Master SQ acoustic panels. Mostly used in public spaces for general acoustics but many use them for hifi also. I have those four and six more about 1-1,5 meters behind behind the sweet spot on the wall to kill echoes and general restlesness in the sound. They work great at my place.

Thanks Patu,

I'm slowly dabbling with acoustic panels on reflection points on side walls and the rear wall. In your case, I'm more curious about results of panels on the front wall, directly behind rear-ported speakers. I don't want to detract too far from the pics thread. My email is in my profile if you're so inclined.

That looks really nice in cherry and black, the same as mine, but looks a little on the low side. If you could afford another shelf it would look the business and you could leave the bottom shelf empty which I am advised improves the SQ even more

Ken

Thanks Ken.  Not sure I’m convinced about adding an empty shelf either for cosmetic appeal or added sound benefit. I actually have the ability to add another shelf as what you see in the picture is a modified 3 level Fraim Lite. I still have the standard level uprights in the box but these will be used if I ever add an extra box say XPS.

the smaller the rack the better the SQ. Keep it as it is!

Does the glass actually contain Laphroaig or TCP as we call it?
