System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

And in context with system

Great pic, really. For once, the system is just functional to the image. Good, really good.

Moved into a new home and have been busy setting up a new listening space... photographic evidence below...

That is one cosy looking room and a delicious system. The room treatments don't look too intrusive. Perfect man cave. Jealous ++.

Thanks Kiwi... it was months in the planning given the move and I worked with some acoustic people to determine how best to manage the rather cubic and acoustically imperfect space. The treatments work amazingly well and lets the system shine.

Zipperheadbanjo,

Looks very nice. Are those the standard Wavewoods or the Super Bass Extremes in your corners?

ZHB - your house is one of the ones I would like to visit for 2 straight dwellings now!  Enjoy your new digs!

Looks great Zipper! I am currently having my room evaluated by the same acoustic panel company. The products look quite nice imo, and you seem to think highly of them. Thanks for posting and enjoy the space!

Alfa4life - I'm not seeing speaker cables... how have you done that trick? (of hiding them).

I love the bare stone wall, btw.

And purely out of interest, can I ask why you didn't mount the TT shelf directly above the Fraim?

Roger

PS - if that's a stupid question, then apologies.

ZHB. As a follow up - Were you able to do some trial placement of the panels in the corners before permanently mounting them and are they fixed per the standard Vicoustic Flexi Glue? I ask because I have a few Wavewoods I'm experimenting with at various locations in my room on a temporary basis. Thanks.

Thanks for comments guys.

Roger under the house there is storage area / crawl space so speaker cables go down behind Fraim and then up behind each speaker, result domestic harmony and me being filthy dirty from crawling around under house.

Reason for shelf being offset was that the stone wall was flattest in this area, it was a time consuming task to say the least to make the box to mount shelf to so this position was best for shelf, it sits part over floor and part over fire hearth so Fraim had to be offset, the Fraim also hides a hole that ariel and power cables come out of.

Hiding the cables under the floor is a really neat solution - and your second picture with the speakers looks great too!

I'm with the others who praise the look of your room! Your former room looked like a real den (in a positive way) , but this room looks lovely - even with acoustic treatments which usually looks plain ugly.

Hi Joe... I didn't do any trial placements. I wanted to set the room up "optimally" (in a theoretic sense at least) from the get-go... so about 6 weeks before moving in I took room dimensions and did a room diagram, and then started discussions with some acoustic people about how best to treat the room given my electronics and medium size floor standers (Proac D30R), and the challenging 11 x 12 x 9 dimensions.

I choose where I wanted to set up the speakers and the gear and seating position, and then we determined how many panels I would require. The people I conferred with felt strongly that I would need bass trapping in the front corners, diffusion on the back wall which is very close to the listening position and adsorption / diffusion on the side walls for 1st and 2nd reflections. We ended up using a lot more diffusion than pure absorption as this apparently is helpful to keeping a thoroughly treated small room from sounding too dead.

Once I got into the house I set up the bass traps and the diffusion on the back wall... then the gear... then determined where the side panels would need to go using a mirror. On one wall I was able to catch both the 1st and 2nd reflections, and on the other only the 1st reflection.

I was thinking I would actually put up all the panels, and then try selectively removing some to see if I preferred less treatment. I may get around to that at some point, but I'm so pleased with the acoustics of the space that I feel no need to tinker at this point.

also... yes the wavewood are adhered using flexiglue. Very easy to install.

I think removal is fairly straightforward also, and that the hardened glue can be easily be removed from the foam on the back of the wavewood for trying other positions.

ZHB- How long did it take for **coustics to put together your treatment plan?

Hi Mark.. I worked with one guy who is a re-seller for *icoustic... and another who makes acoustic panels for recording studios etc... I ended up getting plans from both and purchased materials from both individuals. They got back to me within about a week or so once I sent them a room layout and measurements.

Might I suggest that if members wish to debate the relative merits or otherwise of combining Naim electronics and Proac speakers, then please by all means start a new thread.  This is the System Pics 2015 thread, and as such all it asks for are current pictures of your system, which can by all means include Naim and Proac together (You may not like it, but it's not a sin)....

I have pruned back the thread accordingly. Carry on...

After a few (too) quick upgrades I'm now really happy with the sound of my system! The next step is to work with the room.

My beloved SuperUniti has been superseded after over two years of wonderful service.

Posted on: 31 July 2015 by Mike-B

Congratulations,  that 272 is a real nice player,  I expect the sonic gains over SU will keep you & the rest of the Halibut shoal happily splashing around the mudflats for quite a while

The amp is - did you say 250 - ?

That empty shelf looks like its reserved for an XPS.

Well if the sound is good then you need not worry too much about the room because it looks really good! The Ovators are so nice!

Congratulations Hungryhalibut! I bet it sounds nice from the go? The 272/250 is what I hope to end up with myself in a few years. I was fortunate to listen to the 272 with the 200 and I was duly impressed - and with the 250 it must be quite something!
