System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

Hopefully in about three weeks time we will have a room worthy of the 272/250, with repaired and skimmed walls, skimimed ceiling, a new carpet and a splash of Farrow and Ball. Until then, system No. 2 (the Roberts radio in the kitchen) will be pressed into action and the evenings will pass in the company of a paint brush. This has been long overdue, and when we have visitors we will no longer need to apologise for our squalid living conditions!

That must be the most compact, least intrusive Naim system I've ever seen.  How does it sound?

I'll bet that is the quietest background ever - even quite than a Statement!

All,

here we go with a first post on this thread. After much moving around of boxes, they are in their current resting place now. At least until a new toy arrives.

Wouldn't it be better to pull the rug forward between the speakers and put chips under the Fraim and other support?

SheffieldG,

it is a Vulkan from Tiger Paw. I got it very recently as the Rega was on the right top shelf previously. This is not a great support and cannot be levelled properly. I was also trying to improve SQ from vinyl overall after I got my 552. CD came on leaps and bounds but vinyl got worse. So the Vulkan allowed me to move the Superline to a better place and the TT to have a proper support. The Superline was previously in the middle of the brawn stack. Unfortunately I installed the Vulkan a bit high. The phonos reach but just which means any more moving of boxes is more limited by cable lengths.

Here is one pic I have handy. The RP8 was a great step up from the old P5 by hte way. Finish was not the best however.

GraemeH,

what would be the plus for having the rug between the speakers? I'm happy to experiment so please let me know.

Also, the right rack floor spikes have gone AWOL after numerous relocations so I have got used to siting the rack on a "sacrificial" rug. It's not easy to pick up these bits and pieces, chips etc overseas. There are some fine PSUs in the right rack. Long term they need to be on a Fraim. I really didn't think stacking and separation made much difference until recently. I've had to try a lot of box moves of late to get the system singing. Still not quite there but I will wait until the final piece arrives in a few weeks before I tweak any more.

I like your room a lot, but my first thought was with all that floor would it not sound better with a rug in front to damp reflection.  Of course I have not been in the room, so I may be off base in my impressions.

Sounds like me. I got a few of those black X's before I finally saw a picture appear in the preview window. I had to sign up to Imageshack to post a picture and the free trial is about to end so my efforts above may be my last!

DrMark,

the room looks bright from where I was standing but behind the camera are lots of soft sofas etc. It does not sound bright to my ears. But as we will have spare rugs about the house, I will give it a go.

I was thinking what Dr Mark has posted.

Worth experimenting I think.

Spare rug move seems cheaper than a DR upgrade or some new fancy cable!

Love that room and setup kiwi cat! My wife uttered a "too large" when she discovered I was after the Ovator 400. I love the look of them and would like to have a chance to listen to them one day. I have the US & SU myself and it is a cracking combination!

Is there room for LPs in the narrow shelves?

Perhaps you should have started by telling her that you were after the Ovator 800s, Mr Fjeld. She might have been very happy to negotiate you 'down' to 400s

Haha, obviously I still have something to learn about cunning negotiating tactics!

Mr Fjeld

My wife did not like the look of the Ovators in the shop. However once a trial was arranged in our home she was happy as they did not dominate the room. FWIW they are also cat proof as the mesh coverings protect the woofers from claws.

Mr Fjeld

PS the unit shelves do hold LPs. But in my case no record player!

Close. One of my cats seems to have caught a claw in the grill and pulled it off. Never repeated that, however.
