System Pics 2015
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.
The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

Really sexy Olive system there - I am sure it sounds great too. Olive was my first exposure to Naim. I like the look of that left TT plinth - any chance for a closer look?
And what is it? I just peeked at your profile and the TTs seemed to be omitted (or I am too sleepy at this late hour to notice - lol.)
Kiwi cat,
Nice looking system and room, thanks for posting your pics. I see your 400s are close to the front wall and the left speaker tight to the side wall. Did you do much experimenting with speaker placement and was this the optimal positioning?

Hi Joe, there is literally nowhere else I can place the speakers in the room. They are 2.2 meters apart and the backs of the speakers are 33 cm from the wall. The only adjustments I can make are move the speakers forwards and backwards and adjust toe in angles. However they do sound good. In the next month the system is being moved to a larger room, getting a Fraim and separate spur power supply and an exta powerline. Also the Fraim will be to the left of the left speaker, so looking forward to getting things optimised.

Adriantsk, lovely olive system. What brand is that turntable?
Mr Fjeld
My wife did not like the look of the Ovators in the shop. However once a trial was arranged in our home she was happy as they did not dominate the room. FWIW they are also cat proof as the mesh coverings protect the woofers from claws.
Close. One of my cats seems to have caught a claw in the grill and pulled it off. Never repeated that, however.
Yes cat lover, that is exactly what happened to my right lower speaker grill twice! However it was put back in place quickly and she seems to have finally got the message. A previous Rega speaker with exposed cones was badly gouged.

Thanks for the response. I've only heard the 400s once, but was quite impressed and they are on the fringes of my upgrade radar. I'd appreciate any follow up once you've got them set in your larger room. Cheers!
Dr.Mark & KiwiCat:
The turntable is Dr.Feickert Analogue Woodpecker with Ortofon TA 110 with Ortofon MC Quintet Bronze cartridge. At the moment using 100R 10nf loading, will explore more to the best matching loading.
Yet to update personal profile.
Naim owner for 10 years; first time photo poster.........
Or maybe not.
Sounds like me. I got a few of those black X's before I finally saw a picture appear in the preview window. I had to sign up to Imageshack to post a picture and the free trial is about to end so my efforts above may be my last!
Dave
Have you tried Photobucket?
it is a Vulkan from Tiger Paw. I got it very recently as the Rega was on the right top shelf previously. This is not a great support and cannot be levelled properly. I was also trying to improve SQ from vinyl overall after I got my 552. CD came on leaps and bounds but vinyl got worse. So the Vulkan allowed me to move the Superline to a better place and the TT to have a proper support. The Superline was previously in the middle of the brawn stack. Unfortunately I installed the Vulkan a bit high. The phonos reach but just which means any more moving of boxes is more limited by cable lengths.
Here is one pic I have handy. The RP8 was a great step up from the old P5 by hte way. Finish was not the best however
You are lucky having the solid wall to be able to use the Vulkan - I wish I could do the same, but owing to it being a plasterboard over brick wall I cannot see how I can fix anything to it. From what I have read elsewhere, the Vulkan is a better and more affordable solution than Fraim, which is (typically) overpriced.
Wow.. REALLY nice. Happy birthday spacey!
TBH, I've not tried it without the glass shelf and the rubber pads so cannot comment! I'd expect it to sound the same without though. It's a digital product; vibs in analog kit is and was an issue for valve gear and TTs. ;-)
Having (finally) redecorated ... I think the set-up looks better than ever! I've removed the CD shelves (hardly ever play CDs these days) and attempted to de-clutter. We still have to choose curtains but hopefully they will only add to the fresh new environment.
Oh, and the system sounds wonderful, too! ![]()
... and wondering if the (future) pension fund will stretch to an XPS ...

Modified Furutech TP60 power distributor, to finally replace my old powerigel which was taking up too much space as three of the six 'arm's weren't needed. The TP60 shares the igel's star-wiring configuration, but has an even more bomb-proof construction and convenient sockets as opposed to fixed cables.
The modification relates to the removal of the magic GC303 inner coating, which supposedly eats electromagnetic interference without tempering with the current. I found the effect to be similar to a block of ferrite and entirely unwelcome.

Like the glass supports .... We're these DIY?
Dave, , I have not found any difference in the sound that is noticeable. There is less vibration felt on the boxes when loud music is playing, but my cloth ears cannot detect a difference.

Hi EJ,
How does it fare sonicall and what have you modified specifically?
It does not seem very popular here, however i 'm very tempeted to get one since it's apparently very well made, is star wired and adding a Powerline it looks a very good solution for me.

I've shoved it all back together, just to get some music in the house. I'm really chuffed with the speakers, which still need some fine adjustments on positioning. The carpet needs to settle, hence the strange marks and lines.

Hi Nigel, Looks very nice - going back partial full circle it seems. Best of luck and good sounds.

Congrats, Nigel . Enjoy them!

Wow speakers are very close to the back wall. In my case completely different.

Those SL2s look lovely in your newly decorated setting. Enjoy!
