System Pics 2015
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.
The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.
What made you get rid of your other speakers?

Modified Furutech TP60 power distributor, to finally replace my old powerigel which was taking up too much space as three of the six 'arm's weren't needed. The TP60 shares the igel's star-wiring configuration, but has an even more bomb-proof construction and convenient sockets as opposed to fixed cables.
The modification relates to the removal of the magic GC303 inner coating, which supposedly eats electromagnetic interference without tempering with the current. I found the effect to be similar to a block of ferrite and entirely unwelcome.

Hi EJ,
How does it fare sonicall and what have you modified specifically?
It does not seem very popular here, however i 'm very tempeted to get one since it's apparently very well made, is star wired and adding a Powerline it looks a very good solution for me.
R.
R., it should be sonically as transparent as you can expect a power distributor to be - the inside is all gold plating and thick copper wiring, cleanly laid out, with vibrations damped through an extremely rigid metal structure and rubber feet. I just had to have its macguffin removed: a layer of black-ish crystals, glued to the inside of the bottom casing, a good few cm from the wires. It's claimed to absorb EMI with purely beneficial effects. In my system, however, it just sat on the high frequencies - very annoying so I had it removed (not being a qualified electrician, I had the dealer do this).
For me, this move has solved a small but long term objectionable coloration in the system. Currently auditioning various brands of power cables (which have a dramatic impact on sound, much to my surprise).

I've shoved it all back together, just to get some music in the house. I'm really chuffed with the speakers, which still need some fine adjustments on positioning. The carpet needs to settle, hence the strange marks and lines.

Niger, where are the PMC? Anyway a nice job. The 272 is a great Naim product. Ciao, Maurizio

They need to be where they there otherwise you get NO bass. None.
Very nice Nigel. The SL2 is a wonderful loudspeaker; as was its predecessor.
If Naim had continued evolution down that route, we might have had something very special indeed.
John.
Nigel,
how did you sort placing the speakers so close to the wall with the straight protruding plugs of the TQ?
Best

I wish it had. The SBLs were very special indeed.

Naca5 or TQ? might be worth trying the comparison again.
Thanks everyone for their kind comments, and especially to Richard for his wonderfully clear setup FAQ. I've now got them set up perfectly, with everything planted firmly, and the cabinets rocking beautifully. They are sounding absolutely wonderful and I think they look great. I've managed to dress the Tellurium cables so they don't touch the wall or interfere with the suspension, so they are definitely staying! They don't do the precise imaging and depth thing that the PMCs manage, but they more than compensate in terms of sheer musicality. Happy days.
Nigel,
It's great to hear that the SL2s are working out so well and I'm delighted that my SL2 setup guide has helped make it a little easier to get the best from such a wonderful speaker.
One thing, have you checked the torque on the interface plate and mid/bass driver bolts? Worth doing in my experience. SL2s are well worth the investment into a decent torque driver and bit set.
Glorious, Nigel.
Chris
I bought them from Cymbiosis, and Peter has done the necessary to ensure everything is torqued 'just so'. I feel so lucky to have found these, they are absolutely beautiful and I can't quite believe that after all the ups and downs that I now have a second chance at owning something so wonderful. The engineering that goes into them is really quite something.
And the maple goes so well with the new decor!
The maple looks really exquisite. And Peter is a master at setting up the SL2s.
Peter just did the torque - the setting up was done by yours truly, but I know that they are exactly as they should be. They look so much nicer in the room than the cherry ones used to, and the maple is much better than that which I had on my one time nSats. Now that the 272/250 is warning up again, the sound is really amazingly good.
Now they are set up properly, you'll see that they are much closer to the floor, and also the essential SL2 setup toolkit by the fire place.

You should be putting the mirror up, not putting your feet up !
The mirror is currently being painted, in a nice Laura Ashley ivory eggshell. Coat no. 3 tomorrow, then I'll put the glass back in. I have done so much painting over the past two weeks it's great to have a rest. Then there are all the pictures to arrange......

What, no PMCs HH? when did that happen?
Yesterday. Do keep up!
Sorry! I'm still catching up after my hols. Congrats, hope you are enjoying them

HH...I think you buy your socks at 'Next', my hubby has the same! ![]()
HH, interesting speaker that lead me to search the SL2. Found photo's of your previous SL2's from 2009 that revealed your LP12 next to a MacBook Pro maybe into a DAC for playback and or streaming. You were quite the trail blazer. Any chance you'll go back to a UnitiServe?

Absolutely Richard. I concur - being a very happy SL2 owner and user for quite a few years.
I was referring to a possible generic evolution on from the excellent SL2.
