System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

The engineering that goes into them is really quite something.

And the maple goes so well with the new decor!

Ahh, you must have bought them very recently HH - I suspect I saw them when I popped in over the bank holiday weekend; and mighty fine they did look.  Great to hear you have your music playing back just as you want it.

Not me I'm afraid. My LP12 was long gone by 2009' and I've never owned a Macbook. It's nice to have been considered a trailblazer, but alas, no.

Davina - the socks are M&S.

Gosh, I'm dull.

I agree the Maple look much nicer than Cherry - nice light touch but not to light. I should have gonek for maple, too.

Hi HH.

Having now gone full circle I am sure, that this lovely pair will never go anywhere. They look great in your room. All you now need is an Andy Waite painting ( Arundel based) over the fireplace to complete your view.  A big congratulation from me! ATB and enjoy Peter

Absolutely Richard. I concur - being a very happy SL2 owner and user for quite a few years.

I was referring to a possible generic evolution on from the excellent SL2.

John.

Yes John, I know exactly what you mean. ATB Peter

Lovely speakers - I wouldn't part with my rosewood pair. I've got mine sitting on a pair of granite chopping boards as I couldn't get them to level properly through carpet and underlay. Helped tighten up the bass, treble and overall clarity for the sake of a few £s. Apart from the occasional re-tightening of bolts, don't need to touch them now until I move house perhaps.

He is a trail blazer, but be careful in following the trail, he changes mind and direction soon before you understand where you are...

(Nothing personal HH, but I was remembering you praising the Kabers, the Spendors, the PMCs, the SU as final discoveries, and bashing the Powerline, and being doubtful about any other speaker cable than the NAC A5...)

Not unfriendly,

N)

I'm a lot more open minded than I was back then. The Spendors were a mistake, so I picked the Kabers up for £250 to replace them. The SU and the PMCs are absolutely excellent products: it's simply that I could manage something a bit better. I was never planning to change the 23s, it's just that following a mention of Peter having some SL2s here on the Forum, and having wanted some for years but not having the appropriate electronics, now that I do, I decided to go for them.

In hindsight it would have been far better not to chop and change so much, but that cannot be changed, and I've learned a lot.

Anyway, this is System Pics, so let's have some more systems .....

Not to worry - we were given Ovators instead

Great to see the SL2's back in Nigel, i guessed they were coming  Your Maple look much better than others i've seen and suits your room, even if i prefer the Naim Cherry finish. I still have Maple Fraim, but that's what came up available on the used market, so i have stuck with it.

Enjoy the new system, nicely balanced, simple and sounding good i'm sure.

I sense a wry smile Chris…

Nigel, I rather like the wall lights, John Lewis ? We have Anglepoise Type 1228 in several rooms . Makes for something of a theme through out the house , works very well .

Looks great Martin

I also really like the maple - looks very nice.

Yeah I dont kwnow why the DBL had to be wider than the 15 incher, If naim had narrowed the cabinet, incorporated the surf board front, bouncy tweeter pod and a separate box for the mid-range that the tweeter popped in and out of, well, then there was potential of them having the best moving coil active speaker of all time - The DL2. They should of done it, would have been truly stat of the art.

The DBL meaures 26" wide. The bass driver measures 15 1/2" in diameter, that leaves 5 1/4" either side. Deduct the thickness of the cabinet (say 1" either side, although I suspect it may be thicker) then allow for sufficient clearance for the driver to breathe either side...Nah, very little scope for making it narrower. Besides, it sounds wonderful the way it is, why mess with it?

Thanks Martin - they are made by Original BTC, who make a wonderful range of lights with lovely woven flex. I did buy then from John Lewis though.

Hi Nigel

Congratulations on a lovely, lovely system.

I had the pleasure listening to the 272/250DR at the Signals show and it really does demonstrate how Naim's getting its mojo back.  A wonderful electronics system.  Couple that to your delightful SL2 speakers and you have a system that must sound every bit as delightful as it looks.

Best regards, FT

Hi everyone

Quite a lot of changes in the past few weeks, resulting in two systems instead of one. The Senior Management (my good lady) agreed to me moving my system into the lounge, which involved major reorganisation, wall mounting the TV, new AV stand etc. In return, I agreed to buy some Fraimlite in the appropriate colours. I also had to buy an amp to complete the second system - managed to pick up a Nait 5i 2 at a reasonable price.  I have updated my profile with full system details.

Both systems sound great by the way AND the SM is happy!

Main system:

Second system (still a bit of plasterwork to be done!)

Looks very harmonious, Hugh.  No wonder your good lady is content.

Thanks Mike. My OCD is telling me that radiator will have to be be moved though!

Hugh

Posted on: 09 September 2015 by CariocaJeff

Lovely room Hugh. I had the same problem with a radiator. They always seem to in the wrong place. I bought a vertical one, which is a bit of a feature and therefore was easier to locate.

hope your sky box is quieter than mine is being at present. can't hear it when music playing, but between tracked it is very annoying - hd never seems to stop running.

Posted on: 09 September 2015 by hungryhalibut
It's good to see more socks! Years ago I started a 'from the listening chair' thread that required one's feet to be in the picture. It may be time for a new instalment.

And yes, the radiator needs to move, or be painted to match the wall maybe.
Posted on: 09 September 2015 by Hugh Craig

The Sky Box has its moments but is also in competition with the HiCap, the hum from which appears to be much louder than when my system was upstairs. I don't know if this is due to a more noisy ring main or poor cable dressing. Like you, I can't really hear either when tracks are playing but annoying in-between.

Yes, I saw the sock trend and decided to join in.
I have tried to persuade my good lady that painting the rad would be a least a good interim solution but so far without success. Having achieved so many concessions of late I am reluctant to push too hard...... just yet!!
