System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

It sounds very good. The next step will be a NAC 202 and NAPSC.

Very nice set-up. I presume the DAC-V1 is acting as your pre-amp? But what will the NAC202 and NAPSC add other than deplete your bank account by around GB£2K?

The Meerkat: Hi, thank you for your compliments i appreciate it. The cabinet is an italian forniture, F.lli Galli of Seregno, they produce standard and custom forniture, mine is one-off piece. The TV is hanged on the wall and the wires routed inside a tube in it.

@dave4jazz: Hi Dave, correct, i use the DAC-V1 like pre-amp. The next week when i'll be back from London, i'll try if there are differences making tests at my dealer: i'm very curious if 202-NAPSC worth to be bought. I read many threads in wich there are many ideas about 202 and the possibility to open the soundstage and make it more clean (especially with a NAPSC and a HCDR linked in it), i read also great opinions about the 282 but i don't want to spend so much for a Preamp, at least for a while. Only the ears will give the verdict. I'd like to try also a CDX2, some months ago i noticed a big difference between my CD5X and the CDX2 with a coax exit; ok it's very expensive but in this case it seems my money are well spent considering it's a source.
If you have any advices please tell me, i need it.
Best Regards.

Very thank you Dave it's very interesting and enlightening. I think i'll go for the CDX2...after a comparison before, obviously... I remain curious about the listening test between CD5X-V1-202+Napsc-NAp200 and CDX2-V1-NAP200.
I'll keep you informed.
All the best.

And a small mod to accommodate the new kit:

I won't ask if you can spot what it is 'cos I know what anoraks you all are

It needs to be a bit harder than that! Good idea though - or just ditch the Fraim altogether and get a Hutter.

..... and a pair of ESLs too HH?

Posted on: 27 December 2014 by hungryhalibut

Eh?

Posted on: 27 December 2014 by Steve J

You and good old George are the two forum evangelists for Hutter and ESLs.

Posted on: 27 December 2014 by hungryhalibut

I've never recommended ESLs in my life. Hence my confusion. Perhaps I'm being dim.

The antiquity corner has not seen a change in centuries so for the 2015 picture I used my ancient Nikkor 15mm lens  to introduce some drama to the scene.

The LP-12 and the Luxman T-450 tuner are from 1978. The Naims and the ProAc speakers were purchased in the end of 1999.

I think that just last week the system finally reached the full stage of being broken-in, now working in harmony on all cylinders. What a pleasure!

Haim - I'd love to hear this system; you have a number of things I like in it.  The Nait 3, the Naim+ProAc combo, and I love the retro tuner as well.  I bet it sounds as good as it looks!

That ceiling also looks quite interesting: can you provide some longer shots of the room as well?

@ Naim2 It works really good. That said, I had an Nait XS before which I sold, then I borrowed a Supernait (1) from a friend for about 5 weeks. The XS an SN were better in every way, but the nait2 produces a very nice sound together with the Ovators. At louder levels (which I prefer), the more modern naits are better, bass control etc. etc. I bought a new turntable and have to wait (financially) to buy a new amp ( I think I want a SN2).  No rush though, I can live with the nait2 for a while..

@ DrMark Yes, so it seems

I would agree about the Nait2 and Ovators, especially at louder volumes compared to a Nait XS. Other speakers i have tried have shown the Nait 2 to be better at communicating than the XS, so long as you don't ask too much of the Nait in terms of volume or of difficult speakers.

This is how my system is looking this Christmas.

Its a bit of a Work in Progress as I need to fit a shelf in the unit, and the Superuniti will be replaced by an NDX in the next couple of weeks, but its been an enjoyable week with it as this combo!

Posted on: 28 December 2014 by hungryhalibut

Chris, you need a proper rack, and preferably not between the speakers. That TV cabinet will be dreadful for sound quality. Even a basic Quadraspire Q4 Evo will be a huge step forward.

Posted on: 28 December 2014 by Steve J

Hutter would look good too.

Posted on: 28 December 2014 by ChrisH

All of this I know, of course!

Living in a typical small British house, the listening room is also the living room and main

downstairs space, so the options are somewhat limited.

But I do have a plan where the system will move to, in time (against the wall behind the Christmas tree, which is under a staircase - the electrical sockets including the mains spur for the hi fi is in that corner).

But furniture needs to be moved, the room needs to be rearranged, money needs to be saved, etc, etc, and all of this takes delicate negotiation.....!

Whether I will ever manage to have the speakers in free space remains to be seen though.

I appreciate a proper rack will make a lot of difference, and funnily enough Steve J due to the smaller dimensions of the Hutter, it is on the candidate list .

Looking at some of the other system pics, I can see a lot of similarities to my set up as there are limitations for some people in the space there is to work with within their homes.

What I will say though, is that even bearing all of the poor sonic qualities of the positioning / furniture, the system is banging out some great sounds regardless, way beyond what I ever imagined I could achieve from a hi-fi system.

I guess its like my old school reports: could do better (but Im very happy all the same!)

New system for 2015!

Gone is the Sonos / CD5i / Nait 5i and in is the Uniti!
