System Pics 2015
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.
The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.
My system is finally back together after being in storage all summer for floor refinishing and kitchen remodel. And we just put the carpet back down. I took this opportunity to abandon my previous "furniture style" rack, and build a new one, inspired by Naim Fraim. The new rack uses the glass shelves I had before, and materials that were mostly on hand, and cost me little. It sounds better than the previous one, but not likely as good as Fraim. This should hold me for a year or two, and I can now upgrade to Fraim one-stack-at-a-time.
The 80" flat screen on the wall is the monitor for my Mac Mini, and serves for music DVD's and YouTube music clips. (We do not have "cable" or watch TV).

The speakers are of my own design:

The new rack above:
JVC turntable
282 UnitiQute 24/192 Mac Mini
Stageline 260.2 Marchand passive lowpass Xover (subs)
nDAC 555PS DR Threshold S300 (subwoofers)
Nacamichi tape HiCap's NAPSC, DLink, Thunderbolt drive
The racks and speakers sit on Fraim Chips, which seemed pricey at first - but they are worth it IMHO.
Charlie
Having just met Charlie yesterday and hung out at his house with another couple of local guys from the forum here I can say that Charlie has it happening at his place - great sound (he built those beautiful speakers himself), good music, and a great and cozy room to listen to it in. Hobbyists will be hobbyists... Thanks again Charlie for the great hospitality and totally fun day.
that's not a real Fraim rack?
I believe it's "Faux Fraim"
Not real Fraim, but eventually I will get the real thing, and I can now do it one stack at a time. But this one does work pretty well.
Thanks, Gary and jason.
Lionel, it looks better in real life (than in the photos). Perhaps you should have said "Is there such thing as too much equipment?"

Just love the look of your wonderful system. Those speakers look fantastic, and are a great tribute to your DIY skills.

Thank you, Kiwi cat. It has been a serious challenge to build speakers worthy of such fine equipment as Naim, and of course many hours of labor. But then most of us love a challenge and the result is quite satisfying.
The last piece of the jigsaw is now in place, and warming up nicely.

Congratulations. We all knew you would.

You are a constant surprise HH!
No more can anyone call you a Hutter fan-boi ![]()
And of course its looking all mighty fine, looking forward to your report on the XPS and what it does for you....once it's warmed up of course!
Wow, looking nice, clean and tidy, HH! I love it. ![]()
Thanks Alco. I always think your simple systems look wonderful. Maybe it's time for a picture from you?

Room for a Devialet on that empty 4th shelf...

Nice, HH! That did not take long. Of course we all new it was inevitable.
You must have the highest SQ/BC ratio available! (Sound quality per box count)
Thanks, I'm very pleased indeed with it. Loads of boxes are so yesterday. It takes up hardly any space and sounds amazing. And, Graeme, the little gap just happens to be perfect for the iPad to spend the night.

From me ? ...or my system ? Don't wanna scare anyone, so I better post a systempic then. ![]()
Well, a system doesn't get more simple than this I guess... ![]()

It's a mint s/h 2012 Unitiqute. Got it about 3 weeks ago, for a (little to)no-risk price from a guy that happened to live only a 10 minute walk from my house.
At first I had some network issues, but it's been running fine now. (using Asset)
To me the UQ is probably the best VFM Naim unit currently available.
Nevertheless, I (very much) prefer the Ipeng app for my SBT to Naim's own n-stream or its current Naim app. Sonically the Qute sounds slightly less open and airy than the Sonneteer Campion I used before, but otoh the Qute's versatility is quite appealing.
That looks really lovely, and such a stylish room too.

+1 nicely photographed too
Alco, what speaker is that..?
They are Pen Audio Rebel 3s. How do I know this? It's in Alco's profile......
Thanx for the kind words, HH and Dayjay.
I'm a bit into Scandinavian interior, so I'm trying to blend in some of it.
(a mixture of white, grey, a little black and light wood (oak in my case)
I had no intention to buy a UQ btw, but as the seller lived so close to me, and the price was fair, curiosity got over me and I had to surrender to it. ![]()
I'm surprised how powerful the UQ sounds. ![]()
I can hardly tell it has 50% less power than the Nait 5si I had/tried earlier this (and last) year. Luckily, the UQ is deadquiet, unlike the 3 Nait 5si's I had at home. ( they all suffered badly from transformer noise)
I had a UQ2 at one point, thought it was an excellent great vfm device
Alco, the UQ really is amazing. I thought about it when I commented to HH on SQ/BC above. You two could be tied. You have great sound in the room with minimal intrusion by equipment.

That looks very nice HH! The wall to wall carpet makes it look both comfortable and luxurious and the system itsel is just so complete and elegant. This is in fact where I plan to end up myself one day! Congratulations with new speakers and XPS!

Lovely mate. Enjoy.

Less is more and this is certainly very nice looking!
