System Pics 2015

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.

The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

For the same reasons as Chris I'm also using an ''improper'' cabinet. I imagine resonance is what we're looking to eliminate. Would isolating feet, pads under source and/or amplifier be a good compromise? I was thinking something along the lines of SSC Netpoint 100.

Living in a typical small British house, the listening room is also the living room and main

downstairs space, so the options are somewhat limited.

But I do have a plan where the system will move to, in time (against the wall behind the Christmas tree, which is under a staircase - the electrical sockets including the mains spur for the hi fi is in that corner).

But furniture needs to be moved, the room needs to be rearranged, money needs to be saved, etc, etc, and all of this takes delicate negotiation.....!

Whether I will ever manage to have the speakers in free space remains to be seen though.

I appreciate a proper rack will make a lot of difference, and funnily enough Steve J due to the smaller dimensions of the Hutter, it is on the candidate list .

Looking at some of the other system pics, I can see a lot of similarities to my set up as there are limitations for some people in the space there is to work with within their homes.

What I will say though, is that even bearing all of the poor sonic qualities of the positioning / furniture, the system is banging out some great sounds regardless, way beyond what I ever imagined I could achieve from a hi-fi system.

I guess its like my old school reports: could do better (but Im very happy all the same!)

I fully appreciate the realities you face - the thing is, you now have £6,000's worth of electronics, which is a lot of money, and it makes sense to realise its potential. Even if the system has to live between the speakers, it will sound miles better on a proper rack. Even the humble SuperUniti shows very clearly the difference between sitting on a cupboard, a Q4 Evo, and the rack that I dare not mention with Steve around.

That ceiling also looks quite interesting: can you provide some longer shots of the room as well?

DrMark,

You are welcomed to stop by any time you are in the Midwest.

As you know yourself, the Nait and the ProAcs were always a very good match and the room with its open space and high ceiling enhances the balance between PRAT and relaxes articulation. Music is always enjoyable here.

Regards,

Haim

Fabulous room!  Love it!  And while not a likely event, if I am ever up that way I will certainly take you up on your offer!   (Love me some Chicago to visit...)

Maybe hungryhalibut should rename himself  hutternutter.   Lol.    Is it that good?

This will be the first time I have posted my set-up. The initial NAP250, NAC282, DAC, HiCap2 (DR upgraded), Audiovector SR3 Avantgardes were bought about four years ago. This year I had my Unitserv replaced by the NS01 due to the constant issues with the Unitiserv. Soon afterwards I realised the best performance from the NS01 was streaming so I purchased an NDX, ex-demo.

I'm very pleased with the system. Not sure what the next upgrade would be. Possibly lay the ground for a NAC252 by getting a Supercap?

It may have been the wine on Christmas eve but I am sure I heard "ho ho ho merry Christmas"  at midnight from the Allae's

I'm not so sure. I have used Fraim since July 2001 and have been pleased with it, but I have to say that the photos of the Hutter racks here do look very nice.

Posted on: 31 December 2014 by Steve J

With his system he realises he needs function rather than form.

Posted on: 31 December 2014 by Clive B

And in all good design practice, form follows function.

Not in the case of Hutter. Functionally Fraim and even Isoblue with glass and balls sound better.

HH...I am seriously looking at the PMC23s, to replace my Spendors. Can't see how the grills clip on?

Posted on: 31 December 2014 by hungryhalibut

They have magnets embedded in the grilles, and under the veneer on the speakers themselves. Very neat.

I've owned Fraim in the past, and it does sound better. I've also had Isoblue, but it's too wide for where the system lives these days. They are all good.
