System Pics 2015
Posted by: hungryhalibut on 21 December 2014

It's the 21st of December, so it's time for the new System Pics thread.
The SuperUniti and UnitiServe are the same as last year, but the Hutter rack and PMC twenty.23s are new.

Frederik, this is actually an ideal setup for me. I was just wondering what kind of speakers I can get away with just leaving on the shelf like that (I know stands make them sound better, but I don't like the look, nor do I have the room).
Thanks in advance for your response

Hi Tom!
I'm not really sure what you mean with your question but I will try to answer it.
I use a pair of Dynaudio Excite X14 and I think it works really well. They are a rear ported speaker so they would benefit from a little more room to the wall than the 4"-5".
With this positioning of the speakers a front ported speaker would probably be better but I really like the Dynaudio sound so I'm happy with my X14.
A few speaker that I my self would check out if I didn't have my Dynaudios are these:
Scansonic MB-1 (Designed by the man behind Raidho but at a much lower price)
System Audio Mantra 5
PMC Twenty 21
KEF LS50
I forgot to mention these: Buchardt Audio S200
Buchardt Audio is a new Danish brand that looks very interesting.

I just showed the wife, the resident IT geek your "engine room". Now she is interested in Hifi at last!

Guru Juniors would work great. They are designed with little rubber feet that decouple them from whatever they sit on. They sound great in real world placements.

Hi ragman, thanks for your comments. I'm glad to be of service!! I hope SWMBO takes up the challenge ![]()
I replaced my NDX/SN/HC2 with a UQ2 feeding a TP DAC-VC and a pair of MB100's. Very simple and a big improvement.
It took a few weeks to come on song, not that it was bad to start with, but 5/6 weeks in it is sounding mighty fine.
Bodger,
I like you're bigger set (early 2014) better![]()

Why the TP DAC instead of the DAC-V1?
Intothevoid: can you explain what everything in the engine room is / does?

Ah, but you've not heard the improvement ![]()
TBH, I didn't rate the NDX very highly. Most probably limited by the SN/HC2, but I swapped from using a Sonos ZP90 -> DC1 -> SN Dac to NDX -> Hiline -> SN and the difference was marginal at best. Certainly not worth the outlay.

Already done that Gavin

I live in a small apartment so can't do much with positioning. Would I be better off with the rack to the left of the speaker?

how big is the room in meters?
2M x 2M

okay that is really small. Do you have bass boom with motives?

2 metres x 2 metres. are you sure? That is 6 feet 6 inches x 6 feet 6 inches, surely that cannot be right?

A bit off. 2.7 x 2.7. not a big room.

The dreary sad January looking Crimbo decorations and tree now banished to the 16th planet of Tau Ceti, it's time to oblitorate the winter gloom the good old fashioned Earthling way with psychocardiograms in perfect harmony...
It's a romantic notion, and I too pine for the simpler life in many instances; But for the vast majority of the world's population, the world is now a much happier, healthier, more welcoming, less discriminatory and cruel place than at any time in the past. Even in developed countries, the 50s, 60s, and 70s were no time to be gay, black, hispanic (or other identifiable minority) nor female. For privileged, straight, white guys, it was perhaps just fine.
Yeah, until WW III starts...
This is my setup.
Only started using Naim early in 2014. I now have all my CDs( about 1500) stored in flac on my unitiserve.
I use my untiqute 2 and a ipad to controll playback. The unitiqute is plugged into a nap 100 to drive my speakers. The are a set of XTZ 99.26 MKII. Probably not very well known outside of Scandinavia, but I like them alot.
After a few teething problems I am now very pleased with my setup and the Naim Ipad app works well.
Just updated the firmware and I now I can use Spotify to Discover new music.
All in all very happy With my Naim products

Here are my 2 systems:
Main System

Rega Planar 3 w/Super Bias
Rega Planet 2000CD
Squeezebox
Naim NAC92
Naim NAP90
Mission 774 Floorstanders
2nd System (Kitchen)

Naim UQ2
Q Acoustics Concept 20
After spending too much money over the past 10 years on racing cars & my main system being in the need for a bit of updating. I bought a UQ2 as a 2nd system in Nov 14.
The musicality of the UQ2 is great & has made me decide that I will rip all my CDs & get rid of my CD player. 2015 probably will bring a new set of speakers for the main system. Maybe some Guru QM10II or Kudos x2s...
